Urban Meyer to Texas rumors have started
What better way to see if it's a culture thing at Michigan than to see if Urban can make it work at Texas.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:13 AM ^
Anything that gets Meyer out of OSU. I still think he's having a lasting impact there. His management of a program, ability to see the big picture and relate to people, and his dislike of UM IMO are all still impacting both programs. I would like him and his influence away from OSU as soon as possible. I have no doubt he'd turn Texas around in no time with all the talent they have there already and available to recruit from.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:20 AM ^
I think he's shadow coaching the team
December 1st, 2020 at 10:30 AM ^
I think so too. He was forced out, probably still wants to coach, works for the AD, he hired most of the coaches on Days staff, and he uses his access from TV to input.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:14 AM ^
He's the guy who made Day hire Greg Mattison and Al Washington. So you're not far off.
I think a couple of underrated aspect of Urban getting a new job would be bringing some OSU staff with him and stealing from their Texas recruiting pool.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:32 AM ^
Also, OSU has done a great job recruiting Texas under Meyer/Day. If Meyer is coaching UT, he could blunt that.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:40 AM ^
I think this is a really good point! OSU is absolutely killing it in Texas. That valve needs to be turned off immediately and Meyer coaching Texas would hopefully do just that.
December 1st, 2020 at 1:47 PM ^
If Meyer were at UT, I doubt Ewers decommits and goes to OSU. If Meyer were to go to UT this off season, would anybody here be surprised to see Ewers flip back to UT?
December 1st, 2020 at 5:29 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised but Ewers is slightly more of a pro-style QB so not sure if he fits the Meyer system perfectly but I don't think Meyer would turn him down.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:47 AM ^
But Tom Herman is his guy. Not a lot of coaches take jobs after their members of their coaching tree get canned.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:53 AM ^
Meyer's OSU defensive coordinator is on Herman's staff in a similar role.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:55 AM ^
I don't see Meyer as someone who would have a problem kicking anyone out of the way if he really wants it. A competitive spirit I would love to see here.
December 1st, 2020 at 8:35 PM ^
Completely agree that Meyer would run over anyone if it advantaged him. But completely disagree about wanting him (or anyone of his ilk) running our program.
December 1st, 2020 at 2:24 PM ^
Herman was Meyer's guy. Rumor mill has it that Herman is the cause of Meyer leaving OSU.
- WR recruit-at-the-time Garrett Wilson (Austin native) flipped his commitment from TX to OSU.
- Herman was pissed.
- Herman leaks to reporter Brett McMurphy about Z.Smith's background (not coincidentally WR coach and obviously involved in Wilson's flip).
- McMurphy begins expose on the Smith saga.
- This of course ultimately led to Meyer's resignation.
Not sure if you recall, when Z.Smith was going all 14-year old whiny girl on Twitter a couple years ago he went hard after Tom Herman and exposed Herman on some activity the two of them conducted as OSU assistants while on a recruiting visit to Miami.
Herman had something (perhaps everything?) to do with prompting the whole Z.Smith expose.
December 1st, 2020 at 3:24 PM ^
Oh, we recall Smith's Twitter meltdown. It was delicious.
December 1st, 2020 at 3:54 PM ^
I'm sure you recall the Twitter rants. Not sure if you recall he went after Herman.

I remember something about asain massages lol

Who could forget how we got “cool, hook ‘em”?
December 1st, 2020 at 2:36 PM ^
Deleted, BuckeyeChuck way more detailed than I
December 1st, 2020 at 9:21 PM ^
Herman is NOT his guy. Used to be. oHiO fans call him Traitor Tom. Say he was the source for a lot of the Brett McMurphy stuff and would always recruit negative when it came to Meyer and osu.
December 2nd, 2020 at 9:52 AM ^
It isn't Traitor Tom, it is TBT, which stands for Titty Bar Tom.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:13 AM ^
I support him going there. I also think he should take the entire osu coaching staff with him.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:13 AM ^
The real tip-off will be when the UT fanbase starts reporting about tracking some fatcat alums private jet flight from Columbus to Austin.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:14 AM ^
This would be bad for osu. They get a ton of recruits from Texas. That’s why I think USC or NFL is more likely for urban. I could see Franklin bolting for Texas.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
Are you saying Urban Meyer is going to take what's best for OSU into consideration when he makes his next career choice?
December 1st, 2020 at 10:30 AM ^
Yep, that's what he said! HAHA!!! LOL!!!! Urban will do what's best for Urban, and rightfully so.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:57 AM ^
And Texas has a BIG money cannon. If Meyer wants to return to coaching nobody will outbid the Longhorns. 5 years 60 million? If not more.
December 1st, 2020 at 12:56 PM ^
Yes, never begrudge someone for looking out for #1, but I also can't help myself to think of that classic line from Hunt for Red October - "there's little room in Tupolev's heart for anyone other than Tupolev" - when it comes to Urban. To be fair, that sentiment probably applies to most highly successful coaches in the game as well.
December 1st, 2020 at 8:58 PM ^
"We're going to kill a friend"
"You arrogant ass, you've killed us!"
December 1st, 2020 at 10:35 AM ^
You are correct. OSU has plucked the top recruit out of Texas the last 3 or 4 years. Meyer understood that to win a NC, you need to recruit outside the Midwest and get kids who play football 10 months out of the year against real competition. Urbana’s first order of business will be Quinn Ewers.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:43 AM ^
I don't think Urb goes to the NFL. His skillset better suits the college game. He's recognizes and develops talent. He's a great motivator and culture builder.
He also doesn't owe OSU anything. He inherited a good program from Tressel and made it elite.
Texas would be a good fit for him.
Do you really think Texas is going to want Franklin? They might pay Herman's 15 million dollar buyout but they're not paying Herman's 15 AND Franklin's 38 million dollar buyout!
December 1st, 2020 at 10:47 AM ^
Texas just had a black head coach. They won't be doing that again anytime soon.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:49 AM ^
Excuse me? Wtf does that have to do with anything?
December 1st, 2020 at 10:56 AM ^
I think he's saying that racial attitudes down in Texas are such that the decision-makers won't be enthusiastic about a second black coach so soon after their first one failed badly.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:30 AM ^
That's exactly what I'm saying. There was a very large community that never wanted Strong in the 1st place. I know people hate the truth in this cancel culture we currently live in, but racism still exists.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:34 AM ^
Indeed... I also remember the stink made about Strong being the first black coach in Texas history. Having lived in the South for the last ~30 years, I can say with impunity that there were/are some members of the Texas fanbase and alumni/booster associations that wanted nothing to do with a black coach then, or forever in the future.
And VA isn't even the deep south!
December 1st, 2020 at 11:33 AM ^
Maybe so but last time I checked their current coach is as white as the snow im looking at right now here in Northern Ohio.
How's that working for them?
December 1st, 2020 at 11:43 AM ^
To emphasize what you are saying to MGrowOld (aka MGoGrumpy) -- just because it SHOULDN'T make a difference does not mean it WON'T make a difference.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:20 AM ^
mgrowold to the rescue. Thanks for all you do.
December 1st, 2020 at 11:36 AM ^
Seriously? You are that angry at the thought that Texas Donors might not want another black head coach? Did you forget Red McCombs reaction?
December 1st, 2020 at 11:09 AM ^
Franklin has a $30 million buyout. Don't see him going anywhere.
December 1st, 2020 at 12:10 PM ^
Thats the dream right there. Either be mediocre and make a few million, or get canned and make a lotta millions
December 1st, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
I'd love for him to do it. If for no other reason than it would just piss off OSU fans and remind them that Meyer is nothing more than a mercenary. OSU isn't anymore special to Meyer than Florida.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
If that’s the case, why isn’t Warde blowing up his phone right now?
December 1st, 2020 at 10:22 AM ^
Hey you sounded great a Monday Night Football Last night.
Anyways, I am guessing Warde is working on his contract extension for JH
December 1st, 2020 at 10:24 AM ^
Are you willing to sell Michigan's soul to Old Scratch?
December 1st, 2020 at 10:39 AM ^
Just my two cents that I’ll prolly get negged for, but if Jim Harbaugh existed in some alternative universe where everything about him was the same except he played at MSU and presently coached at MSU, would any of us view him as any less of an “Old Scratch” than Meyer?
December 1st, 2020 at 10:45 AM ^
Yes, he would be viewed as less of the Devil. Harbaugh, for all of his plethora of flaws, is universally considered a value based coach. His students graduate, stay out of trouble and there has never been a whiff of impropriety. If you see him and Urban as similar in the evil category, you are an interesting cat.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:55 AM ^
You got negged for this comment, and that is because the board is filled with trash.
December 1st, 2020 at 10:56 AM ^
1) Can you please provide me stats that show Harbaugh’s players stay on campus at least 4-5 years and graduate at a substantially higher level than Urban’s players? A quick google search turned up nothing for me and I’d be curious to see the actual numbers.
2) Nate Johnson, Chris Evans, LTT, Grant Perry, Jourdan Lewis and O’Maury Samuels...remember anything about them?
December 1st, 2020 at 11:02 AM ^
The fuck kind of comment is this?
an you please provide me stats that show Harbaugh’s players stay on campus at least 4-5 years
"At least 4-5 years?" What are you even talking about? Lots of athletes get degrees in three.
As for your second point...look up Urban Meyer's tenure at Florida. Maybe include the term "Fulmer Cup." I'm baffled you named a couple of those players, and even more baffled that you named players that were immediately thrown off the team when their transgressions were discovered.
