Urban Meyer and ND

Submitted by jblaze on
I rarely read Notre Dame blogs and/ or frequent ND sites, so this one may not be a credible source. Anyway, they are reporting that ND is going to ask Meyer to be the new HC of ND football for an incredible sum of money (minimum of $50 million/ 10 years + a bunch of incentives + a switch back to Nike). I guess he's already at $4 million/ year + incentives + other income at Florida, but WOW! RR at $2.5 million is a steal! BTW, Lovie Smith and Jeff Fisher make $5.5 million/ year in the NFL. Why the switch back to Nike? Not that i dont understand not wanting to wear the "Hybrid hem" (or w/e Addidas with the shoulders of everything they make), but why is it part of the hypothetical contract?

probably 'cause ND would require a contract from Nike similar to what Martin got from Adidas as far as "favored nation status" and that the contract with Nike would be the only way they could/would afford to pay him the cash -- and without Urban, why in the world would Nike give such a thing?

I actually believe the guy when he said he wasn't leaving Florida. Especially for ND. Premier school, yes, but with a lot more difficulties to get to the top. Not to mention its cold up here. Thats a big draw for kids. If Michigan had 70 degree weather year round, I guarantee we would have it a hell of a lot easier in the recruiting business.

Florida has won two National Championships in the past three seasons. Meyer is in the best recruiting territory in the country and head and shoulders above in-state rivals FSU and "the U". He's top dog in, arguably, the top conference.
I don't think he leaves Florida, but if he did leave, I think it would be for a unique situation. ND is the most unique situation.

The following is quasi-devil's-advocate, but.... If there was ever an opportunity for Meyer to leave Florida, the ND job, after this season, would be it. If the $$$ figures cited above are around what Meyer would actually be offered, the money motive is huge. Florida, as a public university, probably cannot match that, especially in a recession. Furthermore, as others pointed out below, the QB situation at Florida isn't that great post-Tebow. Next year, Fla. will probably be a contender for a BCS bowl, but likely won't be as elite as this year. FWIW I think they'll win the MNC this year. So, he leaves Fla. at a high point. The media loves him to begin with and if he wins the MNC the fawning will be kicked up even more. And the media loves ND, thus, Meyer leaving for ND = fawnfest. If this happened, we'd hear more about ND/Meyer on ESPN than the Yankees. "Best coach in the country leaves the program he built to restore an embattled traditional CFB power to glory." That is a storyline the media will love. 18 year old kids love ESPN and they love hype. At that point, think the weather is going to keep recruits out of South Bend, with a coach that is a proven winner, and the prospect of restoring ND to her former glory? They would flock there. That's pretty much how things would unfold. If they hire Meyer, they will be MNC contenders within 2-3 years, "once he gets his guys in." Why would all that not appeal to Notre Dame? And why would all that not appeal to Meyer? He gets tons of $$$, and the chance to become *legendary* by being the man who rode into South Bend, saved the day, and returned ND to power. It's a new challenge, and one that he'd ultimately succeed at. What's not for him to love about that situation? And people are afraid of Brian Kelly...

I hate Urban Creyer, but I do think that he might mean it when he says he won't leave Florida. I wouldn't put it past him, but he's not exactly Bobby Petrino or Nick Saban...okay fine, or Rich Rodriguez (for all you haterz out there). But RR had a real beef with WVU! Nobody does abandonment like the SEC. Rambling aside, Florida isn't exactly such a bad job itself. Pope Urban is getting paid top dollar there and has won two championships, 4 NC's in the fast 5 years or so in basketball and football, plus a pretty rich history--I would say Florida is an elite job. It wouldn't be so outlandish to say that Florida to ND is a lateral move--or even a step down, but it is ND.

ND is likely to be able to pay more than Florida, given their NBC deal and that they get to keep all of the money from the bowls they attend. But I just don't see Meyer leaving Florida. It's not like Miles and UofM.

At the current status of each program I would think that going to ND would be a step down. As you stated, he has his program at the top where he is. Some coaches are always looking for that next challenge to overcome so they can stroke their ego but I too think he is gonna stay and honestly would be silly not to unless ND just gave him a rediculous amount over what he is making now.

Not to jack this thread but something is brewing with Meyer/Florida and the qb position. Look at their depth chart. Tebow is gone this yr and brantley will be a junior next yr. The qb they brought in last recruiting class has worked with tight ends at various points during the season and the only guy they currently have committed is more of an athlete than qb at the moment. Over the last couple yrs he's offered a shockingly low amt of qbs so it's not like he's losing out on guys. I know loeffler was recently at inkster and supposedly given the cold shoulder by gardner. I also know they lead for the stud junior qb in north carolina. I don't even know what all this rambling equates to but getting back to how it relates to us. First off, if we have to worry about gardner bolting this is absolutely the place he goes, and there is no close second. Secondly, just what the hell is meyer doing with his qb position? It's not like the tressel/pryor issue either with recruits having a prob with sitting behind pryor for too long. One injury to brantley next yr and meyer is in big trouble. Why is he not recruiting more qbs and is it likely he snake oils someone this year? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I agree. He could have gone to ND the last time they had a coaching search (wasn't he the main reason they fired Willingham?) and he signed with Florida instead. I think anything has changed in the past five years to make him regret that decision outside of possible monetary considerations, but I'm pretty sure he's worth enough to Florida that they would match anything ND offered.

I don't think ND has ever been a Nike school. They wore Reebok for a long time before they switched to Adidas. But anyway, the notion that they'd switch apparel brands to get a coach seems farfetched.

If there was a time for him to do it, now would be it. He could win his third national championship in four years, Tebow will be gone as will some playmakers on defense. If he feels he can't accomplish more at Florida, he might leave (an even heftier paycheck might help). However, I don't see this happening. He'll probably be at Florida for a LONG time.

any nd fan that is still talking about meyer to nd should be working for the free press. last year, he signed a new contract with florida that voided his out clauses to uofm, nd, and osu. florida is the richest athletic department in the country, and nd is going to have to go relatively cheap after paying weiss 18 mil.
