The B1G is really deep in hoops this year. Surprised to see state struggling at home though.
When Neb joins, does NU stay with Northwestern and we just call Nebraska, "Neb"? If I was Nebraska, I wouldn't be happy with that. Does Neb go straight to the bottom of the B1G in hoops? I know nothing about their basketball team.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
Nebraska's basketball team has been constantly at or near the bottem of the Big 12 for many years. I would imagine that to continue in B1G
Edit: Well actually looking at Nebraska this year, they are 13-3 with Kenpom projectioning a 20-10 record 8-8 in conference, so they possibly may be on the upswing
January 15th, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
And they are playing Kansas closely today at Kansas.
January 15th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
If we were 13-3 I'd be straight giddy about our chances to make a run in the tourney. We are so young though that we should be competing near the top of the B1G in the next couple of years if Beilein keeps us heading in the right direction.

University of Nebraska
Northwestern University
UN for Nebraska
NU for Northwestern
January 15th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
Wikipedia abreviates the University as UNL (for University of Nebraska - Lincoln) or NU. I'm used to seeing NU on the scoreboard when Neb plays football. It might be accurate to call them UN, but they might not agree. I think we'll see them use the UNL more often. Just a hunch.

January 15th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
The only real problem I see with UN is that the United Nations might give us crap about it.
January 15th, 2011 at 7:16 PM ^
People in Nebraska refer to the sports teams as Nebraska or NU. But when they refer to the university, it's Lincoln or UNL. For example, "I'll be attending Lincoln in the fall." "What time does Nebraska play tomorrow?"
The basketball team will be in the middle of the pack in good years, and at or near the cellar most others. They haven't been to the tourney since 1998 and they don't have NCAA sanctions to blame.

NW for Northwestern
Neb for Nebraska
That way neither one gets what the other wants
January 15th, 2011 at 3:08 PM ^
... in college basketball history to never win an NCAA tournament game, USF, northwestern, and nebraska. Not exctally a powerhouse program
January 15th, 2011 at 3:11 PM ^
It's hard to win a NCAA tournament game when NU hasn't even appeared in one yet.
January 15th, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
When Neb joins, does NU stay with Northwestern and we just call Nebraska, "Neb"? If I was Nebraska, I wouldn't be happy with that
It doesn't seem to be a problem for the University of Minnesota.
January 15th, 2011 at 2:53 PM ^
it's because of their shoes. Those are horrible.
January 15th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
We should really avoid posts like these. We don't want to turn into the RCMB.
January 15th, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
It would be a fairly big upset (the game's at MSU), the game's really exciting, and there's nothing else going on.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:07 PM ^
Missouri-Texas A&M is a very good game currently on, perhaps we should start a thread for that game.
Michigan State isn't even ranked anymore. This really wouldn't be a very big upset.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
Northwestern beating Sparty is always an upset.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
1. MSU is ranked 24th according to the bottom line on BTN. I don't know which poll this is from, but I'll assume it's one of the major polls.
2. MSU rarely loses at home and is still looking like a NCAA tournament team.
3. Unlike Mizzou-Texas A&M, we have a rooting interest here.
With a close game, a potential upset, and a rooting interest for us, combined with the complete lack of anything else going on with regard to Michigan until tonight, I don't see the harm in having a thread on the game.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
Only that it is on MGoBlog. When the Michigan-Indiana game starts, I expect all-out BB commentary, but not in this thread.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:11 PM ^
There is a Um BBall game on tonight against Indiana at 8 pm on BTN. We could be talking about that, then again, I could have posted a board topic on it as well.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
between the omgz girls, random crap, infighting and posting of the other in-state team's scores (and subsequent threads), this thread is definitely turning into RCMB. not "has potential to." is turning into the RCMB
January 15th, 2011 at 2:57 PM ^
When NU loses it's because they have no idea how to box out.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:02 PM ^
F-ing Draymond Green a 58% FT shooter goes 6-6 down the stretch from the line ...aaarrrggghhh
January 15th, 2011 at 3:05 PM ^
Crawford on NW can play. Looks just like his dad
January 15th, 2011 at 3:14 PM ^
msu ALWAYS wins these close games they should lose!
January 15th, 2011 at 3:14 PM ^
last second 3!!!
January 15th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
I thought I would give it a guess
January 15th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
The natural way to look at MSU is that they'll iron it out during the point in the year when it counts. I watch them and don't see a lot of difference between this early lull and other years. Just waiting for the inevitable 10 wins in 11 games in the Big Ten. But my MSU buddies who live and die by their games tell me this team probably isn't going to get out of weekend 1 and definitely not weekend 2. They laugh when I talk about Final 4.
We'll see. Sort of non-plussed and disinterested with MSU sports. The results give me something to rap about with people, but not much else. Zero emotional investment either way. I couldn't be more proud of myself either. I know that this blog will get there eventually. We just need a win or two in the big sports.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
Draymond green saved that game for MSU, MSU was about to lose for sure without him. Northwestern should have won this game. Big ten is very deep this year. Good luck Michigan versus indiana tonight
January 15th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
they don't at all appear to reflect an inferiority complex. no way no how. especially when they keep getting started before the game is over and have to be updated to reflect that the attempted lol turned into a fail.
let's worry about our own shit and then give a shit about MSU in late january when we actually play them.
January 15th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
+1, etc., etc.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:58 PM ^
We just did in the bowl game, right?
January 15th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
State played today?
Huh. Who knew?
January 15th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
Even though college basketball has the most parity of any major sport IMO, State still should have handled NU at home with relative ease. Can't see them getting close to the final four this year with how they've been playing so far this season. And that's fine with me.
January 15th, 2011 at 10:32 PM ^
Izzo will have them in the final four. If not, he'll get out of the first weekend anyway. Who knows how he does it, he just does. He'd take four lepers and a 4'11" walk on and make it through the first weekend of the tournament.
