UConn Snowflakes - The Defense

This will be the place for hot takes regarding the defense and defensive playcalling.

Not much to glean from this one. Would have liked to see more pass rush from the edge position but it looks like we'll generate pressure via LBs and DBs blitzing

Shutout.  Lot of dudes played.  Seemed like less pass rush today but that is splitting hairs.  The team tackles very well and secondary pass coverage was outstanding.

It was obvious pretty early that Zion Turner was more dangerous running the ball than he was throwing it, which was presumably a factor in how they defended against UConn. I mean, they wound up averaging 1.2 yards per pass attempt (5-20 for 24 yards).

I don't think we've seen opposing quarterbacks struggle this much since Rutgers in 2016.

So many different looks today. So many players played. Great experience. I am sure they got everything they need on film. Now, it gets them the opportunity to put the best possible 11 out there with best working plays. I know the sack numbers don't look great but they are definitely rushing the QB all the time. CBs looked good and on the hip of the WRs. LBs got speed and cover end to end well. This is a different defense but has the opportunity to be great

Not enough of a pass rush from the edge.

I don’t think Morris is fast or explosive enough to be a consistent edge rush. At 290+ pounds, would like to see him inside a bit more, and more reps outside for Moore, McGregor, Anoma, etc.

Though they didn’t show a ton today either.

Gotta love shutouts though!

The Mich defense got its shutout. The backups played with intensity. The run defense looked solid and improved over last week. There were a number of pass break ups.

Game on for next week as they will be tested.

Shutout.  That was good.  UConn got decent yards on a couple plays but nothing more than maybe 15 yards.  Pass rush wasn't a factor but we also blitzed very little and rushed four for most of the game, against five or six blockers.  We'll know more next week.

A little worried about the lack of pressure we’ve been getting. After the first game against CSU, the pressure has been a bit underwhelming. Yeah, we shut them out, but we should be getting pressure without much issues against teams of this quality. Hoping that Minter is saving some stuff for the better competition

Defense did well except for a seeming lack of pass rush. Someone better at analysis will have to address if we were vanilla is rush schemes (seemed like we rushed four a lot and couldn't get home) or if we were trying the more exotic stuff without results. One PI on DJT and then lockdown in the secondary. Short stuff UConn tried completely blown up. Seemed to get tempo'd only once. A great overall performance, aside from maybe the pass rush -- though they may have been hesitating a bit anticipating screens and runs from the mobile QB.

Really felt good me like the pass rush was the “mush rush” Devin Gardner talked about. They were playing the QB not to run more than trying to run him down in the backfield. But we will see if that’s correct on the film.

Felt like the 2nd and 3rd string secondary played better than Hawaii.  In the 4th quarter they were always in position and breaking up passes.  Appeared to be good growth for those guys.

I guess if I was to nitpick one thing on the starters:  it was a frustrating end to the 1st half when there were a few opportunities to get off the field and allow our offense a full 2 minute drill.  They gave up a lot of yards, a d indirectly it led to Cade getting injured because he was taking shots down field to try and get into FG range instead of more run plays and short passing.

I like that we are always around the ball.    Definitely have more speed in the defensive backfield. Makari Paige is starting to consistently make plays. B1G play is finally here.

I believe this is only the 3rd shutout since the 2015 season, where we strung those 3 shutouts in a row. So 3 in the past six plus seasons (those two others skunkings were Rutgers). Yes it's UConn but it's still an accomplishment.

I think both our lines are in for very rude awakenings the next couple weeks.  These were 3 of the most pathetic teams I've ever seen in Michigan Stadium.. Right up there with Deleware State.

Also we're one QB injury away from being irrelevant again.  Harbaugh is sort of cursed with QB injuries.

I agree, both lines should have seemed more dominant against these 3 opponents, but only did vs CSU, which MGoBlog’s UFR slated as up there with worst O line ever esp tackles ever UFR’d. If there’s a worry, it’s that: our line play, both sides, has mostly not looked dominant against the weakest opposition to be had.

But: our QB room suddenly seems deep. Davis Warren, with tiny sample caveats, seems can do some things. Bowman is serviceable. And Cade should have time to heal before tough competition if it comes to that. (And curse _you_ for mentioning what is not to be mentioned! We should never discuss the dark fates out loud.)
