U-M to host Fab Five meeting on 10/8

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Sounds like there's gonna be a town hall of sorts at Hill Auditorium on the 10/8.

The day of a football game. And hockey game.......

Rose, King and Jackson will be on-hand for the event. They'll be joined by U-M professor Yago Colás, University of Houston Professor Billy Hawkins and journalist Kevin Blackistone.

Webber, who has long been dissociated from both the Fab Five and the university, and Howard, who will be in the midst of the NBA preseason as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat, will not partake in the reunion.

The discussion was originally organized by King, who currently lives in Southfield, and Colás, a writer and commentator on social issues surrounding collegiate athletics.

"The aim of this is really to have a discussion — an open, public discussion," Colás told MLive in April when the forum was being sorted out. "It seems to me, from the beginning, that whatever happens with the banners, it should be the result of an informed, broad, transparent public debate and discussion about the different issues at play."

The forum will be free and open to the public. Hill Auditorium holds roughly 3,500 spectators.

According to Thursday's press release: "Panelists will discuss this seminal moment in the University's history -- including the players' cultural impact and the controversy that later emerged."

The discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer with the audience.

Members of the Fab Five were most recently together in early August for the first-ever Fab Five Basketball Camp. Also organized by King, the three-day camp included appearances from Rose, Howard and Jackson.

While the forum in October is being sponsored by the university, it will have no formal say in what the athletic department does or does not do regarding the Fab Five, its recognition within the university or its banners, which we previously removed from Crisler Center.

Just no. Stop. Go away, it's over. Jalen Rose in particular can shut the hell up. I never want to hear from him about anything ever again.

They were phenomenal. There's no disagreement on that. The constant, constant re-evaluation of them and whether we should put banners up and who is Webber talking to is maddening. I don't care. Brian doesn't care. And it's all fueled by Jalen. I don't want a community forum hosted by Kevin blackistone 25 years later to debate the merits of the Fab Five. It's over. Just let it go; people can remember it however they want.

Why let it go? We should stop all mentions of the 97 football team too because "it's over"?

The Fab Five was historic and should be celebrated. The punishment has been paid through years of crappy teams after. I think it's okay to recognize the good parts again and leverage the attention.

To each their own, including JClay and Brian, but keeping the Fab Five in the media and getting attention for M is fine by me. But that's just like my opinion, man.

Actually not a non sequitur if you look at the context.  I was replying to the post above, stating "It's over. Just let it go."

Everything in the past is "over" (including the '97 football team), so I was pointing out that never talking about things simply because they are in the past is dumb.

Jalen is doing plenty of positive things in community, he's literally changing lives. In many ways he's been part of the solution in this country. I hope you can say the same. I can't believe there is a such a shitty attitude about an alum doing good in this world no matter how you feel about the Fab 5. Let that shit go...it was over 20 years ago.

Prediction: discussion about "legacy," "style," "fashion," and all the while the elephant in the room is Ed Martin, Chris Webber, and the fact they never won anything.

Sometimes I wish these guys would realize that they're in the past. That time was fun. It really was. But it was 25 years ago.

Desmond and Woodson are Heisman winners. Desmond was on, what, four Big Ten championship teams (including his redshirt year). Charles won a National Championship. Both won Super Bowls. Brady speaks for himself. They have everything to back it up.

Yet you never see them holding summits to talk about how great they were. Or producing documentaries to talk about how great they were. Or putting up billboards to talk about how great they were. Without a conference championship. Without a tournament championship. (And, before you do it, spare us "they won an NCAA Regional title!" stuff.)

The Fab Five will always be about the Fab Five. Desmond and Woodson are about Michigan. And have way more to brag about in the long run.
