Twitter Poll: Ohio St Fans Rank Michigan Game #2 for 2018

Submitted by SkyPanther on

From twitter polling, Ohio St fans rank the Michigan game #2 in the 2018 schedule. The #1 game? The Penn St. White Out Game in Happy Valley.

Ohio St fans want vengeance for what happened two years ago in the White Out Game. I remember that game very well. It was the biggest upset that year. I still remember yelling, "Yeah, yeah, yeah!", as I watched Penn St return the blocked field goal for a TD late in the 4th quarter.

LINK to 1 minute video of the blocked FG for a TD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpTM-q730Kk

So wanting revenge over Penn St in the White Out Game moved that game higher in importance to Ohio St fans than the Michigan game.

But, by time the Michigan vs. Ohio St game  comes around it may carry very heavy implications for the CFP Final 4. I think at that time Ohio St fans will unanimously feel, even if they won't say it, the Michigan game is the #1 game.

And furthermore, it brings me to why I made this post:  I think Michigan MUST win the Ohio St game. If Michigan loses that game Jim Harbaugh may be viewed as "little brother" to Urban Meyer--in perpetuity. So again, I know from this article Ohio St fans think Michigan is the #2 game. But if Ohio St loses they will have a come to Jesus moment where they realize the Michigan game was the #1 game.

I think this quote at the link is NOT wrong:

This should be Michigan’s year to beat OSU. With that defense and now with a supposed answer at QB if it’s not their year this year then I don’t think they’ll win a game against Ohio State as long as Urban is the coach with recruiting going in seemingly opposite directions.

I live in armpit of the earth ohio and work outside Toledo. It's unbearable listening to OSU fans gloat about their winning streak. Man do I hope and pray that Harbaugh and the boys can beat them idiots this year. I'd love to get some relief from the morons that are ohio state fans.

I disagree wholeheartedly with the quote that this is M's best chance at a victory in the near future.

1) the game is at OSU

2) OL problems are rampant

Unless there is massive attrition on the defensive side of the ball, i.e. both corners leave, Bush leaves, AND Hudson leaves, we'll almost certainly be better in 2019, possibly a lot better and The Game will be in Ann Arbor.

The OL in 2019 should finally be replenished with the 2017 class coming of age.  The defense should still be really good unless all the aforementioned departures happen, the WRs should be the best in the nation, and one of Peters or McCaffrey will be really good. 2019 will be a more complete team.

The 2018 and 2019 recruiting dips won't hurt until 2021ish, and it's possible M gets some 5 star types in 2020 and 2021 such that there could be a reload anyway.

There isn't a more difficult game on the schedule so we won't have bigger problems, but yes, we'll have more problems due to the difficulty of the schedule.  Likely a 3-4 loss season this year unless Newsome or multiple RS freshmen emerge from the ashes of the OT tirefire as functional pass protectors.

Or somehow Pep/JH have figured out how to run a modern offense that can hide subpar OL play.  That's possible, I suppose.

I'm thinking the same thing. So I think the offense is going to have to make up for the young defense next year. And that's why I think Dylan McCaffrey is going to have to be groomed as much as possible this year so he will hit the ground running next year. (No, I do not think Brandon Peters will be the future)

Highly doubt most of the defense goes pro.  We will certainly lose Gary and Winovich, and probably Hill and Bush.  Other than that, highly likely one of Hudson or Long stays and there are no other candidates to leave.  We've recruited well enough on defense that all of them save Bush and Gary could be replaced without missing a beat.

Look at how we reloaded the 2017 defense despite having 1 (!!) returning starter.  Again, the defense will still be very good in 2019.

I don't think losing Patterson will matter.  We'll have an excellent replacement.  The key is getting an OL that is very good and that probably isn't happening until 2019.  All the offensive pieces will fall into place when that happens.

The team will be better in 2019.

On defense they're losing for sure; Chase, Kinnel, Watson

Most likely; Gary, Bush, Hill

Pretty good chance; Long, Hudson

That's a ton to over come, and for you to say Patterson wouldn't be a big deal I'd beg to differ.  Qb is the most important position on the field.  Covers up a lot of mistakes.  Difference between the 2017 defense after the 2016 was it was a lot of unproven really high talent guys.  Not sure if that's the case for 2019 if all 8 of those guys are gone.

Kinnel is easily replaced. He's an average player. Watson isn't a starter (though a high quality 6th DB)  I think you're overstating the likelihood that Long and Hudson leave.

We also have a lot of really high talent guys waiting to replace the departures (which are, again, fewer than from 2016 to 2017).

Look at the 2-deep:

On the DL you have Kemp, Paye, Vilain, Upshaw, Hutchinson, Hinton. TONS of talent in the wings there.

There will be a step down because Gary and Chase can't be replaced but it shouldn't be a big step.

For LBs, you have Singleton, Uche, Ross.  TONS of talent there too.  As good as Bush is, I don't anticipate a dropoff at the position as a whole.  DB is a LB wizard.

For CBs, you have Thomas, JKP, Woods and a bunch of incoming guys that will be second years.  If only one of Hill/Long leaves, there probably won't be a dropoff in the secondary either.

So yes, we should have an elite top 3 defense in 2018 like 2016.  We'll lose fewer guys and have a lot of talent in waiting such that we'll be a top 5-10 defense in 2019.

That paired with what should be dramatic improvement in the OL, elite (possibly best in the nation) WRs and TEs and the offense should improve by a lot more than the defense takes a step back.

And that does rely heavily on the QB position, but 1) We really don't know that Shea Patterson is elite yet and 2) I have very high confidence that one of Peters, McCaffrey or Milton will be elite in 2019.  Those are all high talent guys that will have a ton of weapons.  Someone will emerge.

They also poop in coolers. Their opinion means dick. Just win and give Urban heart problems again

I like where the perception of our team is with the non-michigan fans.  Most have us not winning the East and still view us an unknown with the potential to be an 8 win team at best.  Barret Sallee was on Sirius the other day talking about how OSU, MSU and Penn St will challenge for the East title.  Not Michigan as he says "they are not there yet".

I always prefer to fly under the radar pre-season.

Just as a matter of history, as I recall from interviews, the original code name of the project which eventually gave rise to Twitter was "twttr", but more importantly, it was quite aptly named for its dictionary definition, which is basically a brief burst of information (usually unimportant information).

I wonder if Charles Woodson will go on twitter to lambaste Urban Meyer and OSU for not taking The Game seriously enough.

Hard to disagree with any of that. Especially considering Urban’s record against rivals over his entire career. He lost to UGa maybe once, FSU maybe once or twice tops, and to date has never lost to Michigan.

Harbaugh has everything he needs to win this year. I don’t care that it’s on the road. He has an elite, proven defense, an OL coach who knows what the fuck he’s doing, and a playmaker at QB. We should assume that a LOT of those pieces will be gone to the draft after next season. If he can’t get it done this year, if he starts his career 0-4 against OSU, I will really question if he can ever beat them as long as Meyer is there.  Especially with recruiting going the way it has. We haven’t had a top-100 commit in months. OSU seems to have one every week.

Yep, entirely reasonable perspective for them to have.  Sucks that Tressel lived to beat Michigan and ran up against late era Lloyd Carr and then OSU lucked into Urban just as OSU looked like they were about to actually hit a rough patch and Michigan were still stepping all over their cranks.  Once we beat them the Game will move back up the list real f'ing quick.

I grew up in Ohio... these MFers are clueless. Sadly, they've won too many times lately, but this has caused them to not take us as serious as they should. This is going to change. I promise!

It was my senior year the night of that OSU-PSU game. I completed a keg stand soon after that blocked FG returned for a TD. Fun, simple times those were.

I agree, but only in the context of winning the Big Ten East and I despise PSU. Should never have been allowed into the league.  Second most important game to Ohio State could be Mich v MSU.

I don’t buy the Harbaugh must beat Ohio State or he’s on thin ice. I think he leaves when he wants to leave. But noodle on this for a moment. Since 2000, Michigan has beaten Ohio State in football the same number of times that Illinois has beaten Ohio State in football.
