"Turnover Flicks" - New Football Tradition After Defensive Takeaways

Submitted by KO Stradivarius on October 14th, 2021 at 11:09 PM

I just saw this article by Brandon Brown regarding an apparently new Michigan Football tradition that I did not know about. It is conducted after forcing a turnover - the defense gathers as a group and poses for a picture on the sidelines during the game.  The photos are being used as decorations in the team meeting room inside Schembechler Hall.  Seems like a genuinely pretty cool thing to do vs the typical Turnover Chain or whatever.  Original but not tacky or gimmicky.

Note: I did not see this info posted already, and I read the board religiously and also used the search tool to try and find if someone else has posted this.  Enjoy.

That’s cool - I saw this in the Nebraska game and thought it was a regular photographer taking a random photo, but all the guys were posing. This team has a lot of fun things happening on the sidelines.

That's pretty cool! Football at the end of the day is a game, and it's supposed to be fun. If you're prepared and working your tail off, no reason why you shouldn't be able to have some fun when the hard work pays off. I also like how the "flicks" are posted in the locker room as a small motivator and reminder to the players that forcing turnovers is fun.

Good to see the guys having fun out there. Seems like it's been a few years since we've seen that.

I think I saw a clip of Mike Macdonald talking about it in one of his pressers but this is the first time actually seeing a pic. I like it, simple but fun tradition not over the top.

I think Macdonald’s comment was something like “these guys work too long and too hard not to have some fun with it.”

love the new culture injected by the new coaches, which in turn is due to Harbaugh taking it on himself to find guys who will help him improve the culture. Idk what the final record will be but this is the most fun I’ve had watching since mid 2018.

This board has caused many good intended fans to have OP anxiety disorder. Still, well done.

This is a great idea. It seems to be one of the few (only?) turnover celebrations that is focused on the team rather than the individual. Love it.

"the defense gathers as a group and poses for a picture on the sidelines during the game."

This strikes me as a bit of a distraction—I'm surprised the coaches are fine with it.

You also think co-opting the opponents 3rd qtr 'traditions' (quoted for UN's cultural appropriation of UW's long-held tradition) of dancing around and whooping it up on the sidelines is a distraction?  I mean, it energized the hell out of the team at Nebraska after a crap-shined 3rd qtr that saw UM give up the lead and 22 points.  After the distraction, though, UM outscored Neb 16-7 to win the game.

I'm good with some distractions...

There's a difference between dancing around between quarters when there's an extended timeout long enough for the fans in the stands to sing and dance, and gathering for a photo when the game is still going on.

Is this a big deal? Obviously not. If the Michigan coaching staff is OK with it, then there's no issue.

To be clear. It's not original...it's from the NFL, guarantee MacDonald and/or Weiss borrowed it from the Ravens.

In the NFL, at least during COVID, they had Microsoft Surface install a camera in every stadium that the defense would run to, celebrate, pose, etc.

I just like this idea because it's TEAM, rather than one person getting to do the celebration.

Like, sure you recovered a fumble, but your teammate caused it. Or yeah, you got an INT, but your teammate got the PBU and your other teammate was in the QBs lap...forcing him to throw off balance.

Ojabo is making plays...but a lot of that has to do with Aidan Hutchinson on the other side. (Which, I find it strange that we give Hutchinson credit for creating opportunities for Ojabo, but laughed at the thought of giving credit to Rashaun Gary when he was doing the same for Winovich...I digress).

I like it and hope that it's here to stay.
