Turner to start out at CB (EDIT)

Submitted by icefins26 on
RR was quoted as saying Turner will be starting out at CB - or at least they will try for him to start there since Woolfolk moved to safety. Just an FYI. I guess he has been doing well in 7-on-7's so far.

He said they'll try to start him out there, as in put him at cornerback first and see how he does. He didn't mean "He's the starter", just that they'll try him at corner and if that doesn't work, they'll try him at safety.

Yeah, this goes against everything that RR has said since he was hired. He's not choosing starters yet. Probably not until pretty close to the start of the season, but definitely not before fall practices even start.

I suppose you could just admit that you read it wrong...or you could edit your post and pretend you had it correct all along. -1

Or he might possibly have said "start at CB" meaning "start out at CB." I don't see why that's so far fetched. A lot of annoying stuff happens on this board, let's not make correcting a mistake without a formal written apology out to be a bad thing...

yeah, the whole thread makes for a confusing read - I read the edited OP thinking everyone else read it wrong, now I get down to Magnus's post and find out the OP was edited - I feel misled. If you edit your post substantially (especially substantively) - you should at least make doing so apparent in the post. That is what "EDIT:" is for. Otherwise you throw your own thread into confusion.

I heard the JT will be playing safety most likely even though CB is his preferred position and he's been practicing there. Apparently our lack of depth at safety is non existent behind Woolfolk (he's our lock at safety??, oh boy) and that Vlad has been hurt so it's hard to tell with him

Michael Williams also plays safety and could back up Woolfolk if he were to get injured. Woolfolk has been a special teams standout, which I think bodes well for his abilities as a safety. I'm less worried about Woolfolk than I am about the Quick and the SS.

I've heard conflicting reports. Whichever position Woolfolk is playing (FS or SS), he's pretty much got it locked down. Williams and Emilien are battling for the other safety spot. Based on their skills, it would seem that Woolfolk would be FS and Williams/Emilien the SS. But like I said, I've read that it's the opposite in other reports...

I didn't read this as Turner will be the starter at CB; I read it as Turner will be starting out his career as a CB, and if need be, will move to safety.

Michigan fans have turned into voracious cannibals and argue the dumbest minutae on the intranets? For chrissakes lighten up just a fucking bit.

I am hoping that JT is able to provide depth at both Safety and CB. If his talent level is anything close to what has been reported, I wouldn't be surprised if he unseated someone by the middle of the season.

Apparently Adrian Witty is looking pretty good at CB too. He could be a good depth guy at that spot. At first I thought they would RS him, but with how well he has (reportedly looked) combined with the number of CB we'll (likely) have in this current recruiting class, maybe we have him contribute right away.

I don't see any reason to play him this year. At best, he's probably our fourth corner right now (Warren, Cissoko, Turner). Last year's fourth corner was Woolfolk, by comparison, and he barely played except for on special teams. We're also not losing anyone next year, so it's not like he needs to gain experience so he can step in as a major contributor.

I agree that there's little reason for him to see much PT at corner. However, we currently have very little DB depth, about 1 starter each at CB and S in addition to our starters (Turner and Williams or Vlad). We'll occasionally put 5 DB's on the field at once, leaving us with very little depth. Because almost every DB on our team in on the 2-deep, between special teams and injuries (God forbid) I wouldn't be surprised if Witty saw the field at some point. We don't have a lot of depth for the back 4. Not only will none of those guys play on special teams, but they will probably get pulled earlier than normal when the deficit is large.

It's a new year and everything, but we were short on cornerbacks last year and Floyd didn't get on the field. Cornerback is not a position where a great deal of rest is required. Those guys can run all day. I agree that injuries might change whether a freshman plays or not, but that's the case on every team at every position. It goes without saying, but [barring injury] playing Witty would probably just burn a year of eligibility with no real return on your investment.

You're probably right, and to be clear I don't think he'll play much, just that I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't redshirt. I never heard a good word spoken about Floyd last year, I think that was the bigger reason he didn't play, because he wasn't good enough to. Also, I don't think wasting a year of eligibility on Witty is a big deal with the other CBs we have coming next fall.

Well Avery hasn't signed anything, so I think we'd need to make some assumptions or the convo is moot. Is Witty better than Avery? The coaches seem to really like Avery, and he is more highly rated (I know, I know, injury). It's pretty safe that we'll get at least one more highly rated CB in this class.

I, too, believe that we'll get some more corners, but to say that "With the corners we have coming in, we can afford to play Witty this year" is vastly premature. The comment about Witty being better than Avery is my opinion, not the recruiting services'.
