Tulsa is losing their (our) Beaver
Transferring to Midwestern State University after totaling 165 rushing and 68 passing yards after two seasons. That group of 4 we recruited that year has been a mixed bag. Thankfully the wide out was able to play QB.
Looks like they shaved him right out of the program
I wonder if Newsome and Beaver both decommitted because we slow played them. Both of them were busts, and the two guys that we got lived up to their billing.
and all have had disappointing careers as QBs so far. Ironically enough, Tate Forcier has had by far the most success, and he's not even in Ann Arbor any more.
We also chased Eugene "Geno" Smith and he looks like he's going to be pretty damn good.
Never played QB at LSU. I think it was obvious to both he and the coaching staff that he was not a QB for their system. Also, its pretty apparent that his future is at WR if he wants to make it in the pros, so it probably wasn't a hard sell to him either. He's definitely shown some flashes of being pretty electric at WR, and I think he'll end up a pretty good one before the next two seasons are done. I don't think it's really fair to compare him to Tate, Newsome, or Beaver.
Don't forget about Terrelle Pryor, Justin Feagin, BJ Daniels, and Conelius Jones. Thank god for Devin and Denard.
We haven't had a lot of luck with that name have we?
Conelius, Kellen, DeQuinta...am I missing anyone? Hopefully Mike Jones (who?) Mike Jones can be a solid contributor.
Don't forget about Damon Jones, the tight end who was either kicked off the team or left the team or something in the early '90s. And Teric Jones, who hasn't been very good.
Jones.
if TP had signed with Michigan (as disgusting as that is with hindsight).
This is part of a 3 page manifesto currently in my head regarding the what-if's and major mistakes of the RR era that I will put into diary form someday. Then I will sit back and watch the flames rage like a Saturday night in East Lansing.
Wonder what Tressel has to say about that one. Dude was toxic.
I think pryor while still being a tool would of been fine if kept on a shorter leesh in an eviroment that didn't have so many temptations, and RR really didn't show that he would put up with crap from players so i'm guessing that would of been the case
Maybe Pryor is a bad egg. Do any of us know that for sure he would've been that same bad egg in Ann Arbor? That's two TOTALLY different environments to be in. He wouldn't have had the same opportunities to act that badly at Michigan. Just sayin'
Well, who doesn't? But to chase it and get it and then lose it? Very sad.
Happens to the best of us, (sigh)
Happens to the best of us, (sigh)
Happens to the best of us, (sigh)
Three times.
I remember watching one of his high school games when it was on ESPN. Looking back, that doesn't seem like it was a tremedous waste of time at all.
Are any recruits going to be on ESPN this year?
He just figured out that he wasn't going to beat out G.J. Kinne? Oh well, i love his decision because he gave us Denard.
I am not 100% sure it was really his decision. The Tulsa coaches had some strong connections to Rich Rod and his staff. IIRC, Beaver's decision lined up with Dernard's interest in Michigan. RR may have helped Beaver go to Tulsa to make way for Denard. Of course, there are only a handful of people who actaully know what happened. I am certainly not one of them.
"Midwestern State University" sounds like a made-up-for-TV name, like somebody the Screaming Eagles would play against in Coach.
Duel Threat QBs outside of the top 3 RARELY pan out.
Rarely has a duel threat guy that wasn't a top 3 duel threat guy in his class pan out.
...Denard was ranked as a CB for the record. But just go through the years...you'll find a few. But Vince Young, Terrelle Pryor, etc. were ELITE level guys. But you still might be able to make the argument that both would've been better WRs than they ever were QBs.
Dual*
And Denard was listed as an athlete. Most schools were looking at him to play defense, but it was at Safety, not CB that Florida and the other schools were looking for him to play.
I had a half-written blog entry where I was tracking all the 4-star+ dual-threat guys since 2002 because so many had problems.
I might revisit that and also track the Pro-Style QBs while I'm at it, based on the Hypothesis that by going back to Pro-Style may be a benefit because scouting fewer characteristics means you get a more accurate idea of how the player will turn out. Or maybe not?
Here's Rivals' No. 1 ranked dual-threats since '02:

...and that's just the #1 guy.
But take a look of the guys outside of the top 3 each year. It's bad. I mean just think of guys we've gone after in the past few years. Newsome, Boyd, Beaver, Forcier, Daniels, Newton,
Rob Bolden was the #2 DUAL-threat guy and he hasn't done jack or spit.
Matter of fact I'm going to look at Rivals right now and give you all of the guys who WEREN'T total busts.
2002
#1 Vince Young
#2 Marcus Vick (yea, a reach)
2003
#2 Dennis Dixon
#31 Kevin Kolb (wasn't good because of his legs...it was his arm and the Air Raid system at Houston)
2004
#4 Chase Patton (see Kevin Kolb)
2005
#10 Zac Robinson (see Kevin Kolb)
#24 Matt Grothe (he played 24 years in college, and he wasn't good because of his legs either)
#25 Mike Kafka (system, arm, repeat)
2006
#1 Tim Tebow
#3 Jevan Snead
#4 Jake Locker
#11 Ricky Stanzi (was he that good?)
#16 Todd Reesing (see Kafka)
2007
#1 Tyrod Taylor
#2 Cam Newton
#4 Stephan Garcia (no comment)
#15 G.J. Kinne (thrower)
....I'm stopping here, got bored. But I passed over names like #3 James Banks, #1 Robert Lane, #1 Xavier Lee, #7 Brett Schaeffer, #1 Ryan Perrilloux, #3 Ike Whittaker, #4 Josh Portis, #2 Demetrious Jones, and #5 Willy Korn
its an odd position to be in isn't it? Beaver lead us on, only to go to another. Now, after two years, Beaver has moved on. Do we feel sorry for Tulsa? After all Beaver left us too, so we know how Tulsa must feel. However, Tulsa got to experience Beaver while we never did. Of course, Beaver wasn't as good as we imagined. I just don't know how to feel about this.
Sounds like Tulsa has some real issues with Beaver.
I got banned from the scout board for posting a link to the story of him decommitting espn board.. I think I'm much better off..
