TomVH: Quick Jarrod Wilson Update
I caught up with Buchtel Coach Ricky Powers to check in on S Jarrod Wilson today. Wilson did make it out to Notre Dame this past Friday and has also taken in Penn State and Michigan. Here's what Coach Powers had to say about what's next for Jarrod:
He just went out to Notre Dame Friday so we want to give him a few days to let that register. We'll wait until Wednesday to talk about everything. From there I'd like him to take some time and think about things, can he see himself playing there and living there. We have a pretty good checklist of things, and I think that will probably be his last visit I'm not positive though. Whenever he's ready to make the decision then he'll do it. But we'll figure that all out on Wednesday.
We'll see if any more visits get scheduled, but Coach Powers thinks that Jarrod has enough info now.
No comitt to ND on the visit is a good thing. Very good thing actually!
in this years class if I remember that right. I was surprised to hear Reeves backed had favored them. Of course they may have less DB depth thsn we do.
Wilson would be a great addition to this DB class. A true safety would be amazing. Hopefully it goes well!
Also, I really like that Coach Powers isn't pressuring him or leading him on to Michigan at all. He's letting Wilson make his own choice. I like that
it would be nice if Coach Powers told him about all his great (hopefully, i dunno i'm too young) experiences at Michigan and got him thinking about committing to us.
i'm all for the kids making their own decisions and hopefully these chats about Michigan wouldn't really be pressuring
If he can't decide soon, perhaps a good old fashioned ass-kicking on September 10 can convince him to go blue...
Im sure Coach Powers wouldn't have to do much talking after that.
Haha... An ass-kicking by which party, I wonder?
to show how badly UM needs him?
To show how much fun it is to intercept passes thrown by Notre Dame quarterbacks.
It's sad that you have to resort to a Michigan game vs. Illinois for material.
A game that Michigan won, by the way.
Preaching to the choir there. ND hasn't had a good kitten sniper since I have followed recruiting. Quite sad really
Does your helmet have wings? Yes. Commit.
That leaves Michigan and Rice.
No wonder that McGuffie left for Rice.
So help me God...
How do you keep 'em on the farm after they've seen all the Fighten' blue hens have to offer?
as to which way he might be leaning or if these three schools seem to be pretty even to him?
Impression I've gotten from him in interviews is that he's pretty open. Who knows if that's actually the case but it seems like all three schools have an equal chance to land him.
...nice to see mentorship that is well intentioned. Powers has stories to tell and lessons to pass on.
for the update, Tom. After the last few weeks, I'm betting you could use a vacation?
We have 16 commits and it's June 13th. I'm pretty sure he'll get some time off soon (unless he's way ahead on 2013 kids)
Yes.
This AM on TKA Sam was talking about his vists to ND and others and I believe I heard him say that Coach (Ricky) Powers was doing his best to not sway his decision but had helped him evaluate the things outside of football that each of his top choices adds to the decisions. I took this to mean stuff like academics, networking (business / NFL connections) and the culture of the institution and its fan base.
If you make a checklist and look at those things Michigan stacks up favorably against most including those two schools. PSU is a good school, but it's not great. ND is a great school with great tradition but the fanbase, alumni, etc are a little stuffy and antiquidated. Just hope the kid finds the righ tfit and has a great career wherever (as long as he's earing a winged helmet)
Does anyone know whether Wilson projects to SS or FS?
hes an absolute ball hawk, check out his tape.
He's more of a FS than a SS, but in Mattison's defense, guys HAVE to play both. The two safeties trade responsibilities often, depending on the offensive formation. That's not the case with all defenses...
do you see them trading responsibilities as an advantage?
We've got more experience with safeties playing out of their natural positions than any other team in the country.
I don't think it's an advantage or a disadvantage. It's just a . . . vantage. I'm going to assume having Greg Mattison is the biggest advantage we have defensively, so whatever he wants to do is fine with me (for now, at least). The guy's way better at coaching defense than we've had in years.
although most of the guys left on our board would be huge gets, wilson would particularly be so because we really don't have anyone else that is a legitimate free safety and is his size. he has a very unique skill set, IMO.
Let's hope Ricky is using the "checklist" to help show his opinion, without making it appear he is pushing Michigan.
Everyone in the corporate world knows if you have a strong preference, but don't want it to appear that way, you just build a Pugh Matrix and weight the things highest that will cause your preference to get the best score.. They could put "D-Coordinator w/ Experience coaching best Safety in NFL" as one item and "Head Coach doesn't throw players under the bus during halftime interviews" as another, and "Head Coach not over 75 years old" as a third...
Screw that. By all means, push him to Michigan ;)
Sorry for the OT but I saw Ondre Pipkins released his top 7 without Sparty being in it. Great news! Who are the top 7 though?
One of the posters on RCMB said that he's got Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. I'd assume we are the 7th, but not sure.
This was publicly available on RCMB and not "for members only" so I'm assuming it's ok to post. If not, mods please delete.
I've been impressed with the way Wilson has handled his recruitment all along. First off, I think he's a tremendous talent with excellent ball hawking abilities. He'd be great in Blue. I think Powers has been a good influence in helping him take his visits, take everything in, keep a level head. I don't think you see that type of maturity from a lot of players. Like I've said before, I would love to see this kid in maize and blue.
