TomVH: Kellen Jones Sets Visit Date

Submitted by TomVH on
I just got a text from LB Kellen Jones, that said he has set a visit date for Michigan. He will be coming up to Ann Arbor with his father on July 29th. They told me to let them know if any other linebackers commit to Michigan before their visit, and that they will be watching themselves, as well. I'm taking that as a good sign, that he wants to know if anyone else commits.

I'll take this one for you Tom:

Tom guesses that on July 29th Jones will visit with his father; he further guesses that there is a possibility, although not necessary a probability, that he could (but not necessarily will) commit sometime that weekend, or possibly sometime later.

great to see the staff is finally getting positions of need (reading between the lines that Kellen will committ this summer) and maybe just maybe that the staff is getting past some of the negetive recruiting that they will not be around next year

UM's base Defense is a 4-3 or a 4-2-5 that shifts to a 3-3-5 pending on who they are playing? I ask this because he is a MLB (4-3) or ILB in the 4-2-5 correct? What would a commitment from say Frost (OLB)affect his commitment? What are the other ILB/MLB prospects?

I know, a lot of questions but being an old guy ex MLB/ILB who only knows 4-3/3-4 D's I'm curious on the 4-2-5 type of LB.

Question about the Recruiting Board. How often is the board updated? Frequently when I check it, it seems to be obviously behind on one or more recruits. I just went to check it to see what other LB prospects we are shooting for and I noticed that Andre Yruretagoyena (OL) still has a green smiley face (he committed to Oregon last weekend). Is the board updated on a certain day of the week or just randomly or ... what is the general accuracy of the board?

This is a serious question, not a complaint. I just want to know how to use the board.

It just seems we are "behind" where we should be at LB, both in terms of quality and depth. By over-recruiting the position a little, we have a better chance of getting two solid/star starters. If we only pick up two and one or both don't work out as well as expected, the problem just keeps dragging on into future years. I know this is going to be a small class, but I would still trade another WR or RB for an extra LB. I would trade two even.

As Magnus has noted before, Frost would probably play WR in his first year and then move to defense, ala Cam Gordon.  Seeing how Gordon went from buried on WR depth chart to one of the most hyped and talked about players on the team at safety and expected starter, hopefully this will parallel Frost's career at Michigan, assuming he chooses us (and which I'm crossing my fingers for).

I know of Roosevelt Smith, he is a  Cass Tech and U of M running back  from the 70's. Smith followed the great one, Harlan Huckleby, from Cass Tech to Meechigan.

Magnus being born in the 80's or so probably did keep up on the recruiting of Roosevelt, Harlan, Ron Simpkins and the like, as they matriculated from the vaunted P. S. L.

FWIW Huckleby was a 3* and Smith a 4*, further proof that you just never can tell.
