TomVH: DT Danny O'Brien Update & DE Matt Godin Offered

Submitted by TomVH on

Another quick update on recruiting for you, this time with instate DT Danny O'Brien. Danny currently holds offers from Michigan, MSU, Tennessee, and Syracuse. It's safe to say that his offer list will continue to grow as time goes on.

Not too long ago O'Brien had said that Tennessee and Michigan were his top two choices. He talked about where he's at now, and how did in the combine this weekend.

The combine went really well. There was a lot of kids under the radar, but there was some good talent there. Exposure at these events is always good, and I tried a few new moves I've been working on. I think I did well in the 1 on 1's. Recruiting right now is getting crazy, I'm just letting everything play out and talking to all the coaches. I'll probably make my decision early in the season or at the end of it, I'm not sure.

O'Brien also told me about where he's at with his leader and top schools.

I'll probably only take 3 or 4 official visits, I don't think I'll take all of them. I have Tennessee as my favorite right now, and then everyone else is pretty much even. Michigan hasn't dropped or fallen back, I just don't know the coaches that well. I haven't gotten to really talk with them yet. I'll be up there in the spring either for the spring game or junior day.

The other topic as of late has been how Matt Godin's offer will affect Danny. O'Brien and Godin are best friends, and he talked about what that would mean with his recruitment.

I mean, yeah him having a Michigan offer that has some impact on me. We've always said it would be a dream to play school together, it's something that we've talked about a lot. If it happens, it happens, we're not going to try to force it.

O'Brien is a key piece to Michigan's recruiting efforts. It will be interesting to see how schools move up and down his list, and if Michigan can overtake Tennessee in the end.

Matt Godin also just received an offer from Michigan just now.

I just got offered by Michigan. I called Coach Montgomery, and then talked to Coach Mattison. He said they reviewed my film and I have an offer from the University of Michigan. This is definitely a dream offer, I'm pretty excited. I'm going to wait and think things through before I make my decision, I'm going to visit up there this week and talk to the coaches more.

This is a big offer for both Matt and Danny. We'll see what happens from here.

Good - I know Godin isn't a super-recruit, but I'm glad we offered him. He's a big athletic kid at a position of need. He can play tackle or end, so even if he commits we could still take 2 tackles and 2 ends.

Godin is a good addition to Wormley, Ojemudia, Brown, Odenigbo, Washington, Jenkins, Strobel and Pittman (and whatever DE I left out).

That's nine DEs offered and about 65 total recuits for 2012.  It will be interesting to see how many total offers go out.  The pace will drop off for spring practice I would think.

I'm guessing about 130 total(?) putting us half way through the offers.  I would imagine 80% of the verbal offers will be done by spring practice.

that Godin would be a great candidate to make a switch to offensive guard in his future? He certainly has the height and the weight will come with a college strength program. I just wonder if he has the athletic ability to play on the defensive side of the ball in a big time conference. Either way, he seems like a solid player that could definately help out team out in some way if he chooses to commit.

They will as they get settled. Junior days will bring opportunities to get acclimated with eachother and the staff will certainly invite him to as many home games as they need to. They need to sign three defensive tackles in this class so they won't miss their chances at O'Brien. He seems extremely high on Tennessee, though, so who knows what kind of effort it'll take to turn him.

I know the obvious answer is joyful excitement but what happens if all these offers say "yes".  I also know the odds are exponentially stacked against this but man....seems like we've offered about 631 kids so far.

Nobody can accuse Hoke of leaving any offers in his pocket.

in 2 years offense at U of M will cease to exist as we know it... the defense will average 23 pts per game.. and everyone in the stands will boo our offense when we don't punt on first down.  Hoke and Mattison will be knowen as the coaches who revolutionized the game of football.  BKfinest it...      the

I am actually happy O'Brien doesn't have us as his favorite right now. It just seems that lately in state kids who have us leading the whole way seem to end up some where else.

We're up against some tough competition. I see that Godin is being recruited to Syracuse by none other than our very own home grown Tyrone Wheatley. I know it'd be tough for ME to say no to him

Not a bad offer I just sure hope it wasn't a piddy offer, and that their giving him an offer bc he's worth it not just to get o'brian I would hate losing out on an elite prospect from another state bc they felt bad. Does anyone know if this kid is the real deal?
