[Title edited/đź”’Thread locked @10 am] Is there an athletic department more fueled by HaterAid & Hater Tots than Michigan State?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on December 10th, 2022 at 9:21 PM

It seems like in every single sport that they play that somebody is doing some sort of cheap shot or illegal activity. Off the top of my head I can remember Tropp and Conboy's attack on Steve Kampfer, the Tunnel assault/gang up, the Dantonio march down the field during Michigan's allotted practice time, Draymond attacking Poole, the MSU coaches calling for their players to go for Corum's knees, Izzo protecting multiple players accused of rape, MSU football players being driven from the jail to the field to play a game at Iowa in 2010, Jacob Panusiak's late hits, Denard's head being twisted. I am sure that there is more but I almost prefer Ohio State to them. At least you know that they play the game between the whistles and don't really goon it up as much.

[Cleaned up the OP's title, folks ---we're not going to display a thread title containing any form of the word "thug".

Why?

1) it's a highly-charged term with definite racial connotations.

2) It's long been addressed by Brian in the MGoBoard FAQ section:

https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq

" ...we do ask that you avoid offensive language. If someone corrects your language (e.g. please don't use "thug" due to racial overtones) try to respect that."

[2nd edit Sunday 10 am: Unfortunately there are a few involved in this thread who persist in continued denial that languages evolve.  Bottom line: The fact that the word "thug" (and its variations) now has very real negative racial connotations has been recognized for several years; OTOH the recognition of this fact does NOT make one racist.

And because the temperature of the argument continues to rise despite numerous attempts by reasonable MGoUsers to intervene, I'm forced to act.

Rather than allow the fruitless tit-for-tat to continue unabated, I'm locking the thread down.  -rob f]

Jagger talked smack ( but this tussle was on Druskinis who got beat on the goal.) Joshua shouldn't have celebrated in Johnny's cage post goal, but he manhandled Druskinis to get the goal. Then he skated up the ice, giving John the business. Druskinis waited for the horn then took his opportunity.

Hardly thuggery or bad play on either player's part. This was a close game, and losing the shutout hurt. Scoreboard.

Jagger's brother plays for the Blue's and did for OSU. A good hockey family. This was a hockey play and nothing else.

Probably the most little bro school in the country. Name another institution with as much of an inferiority complex to another institution. I cant.

Not germane to this particular discussion but during one of the discussions of rivalries or The Game, someone on RCMB was grousing that Michigan and MSU by all rights should be playing rivalry Saturday on the last weekend of the season.

That's the lack of perspective there.

Was at the game and unfortunately had a crop of Spartans around me. Not unsurprinsingly, they cheered on every shitty cheap shot their guys took and made every crude frat boy joke you can think of with the goonish ending. And every one of these guys looked like they were at least 50 years old.

Against my better judgement I finally asked "Is assault your answer for everything?" and the reply I got was "He was probably talking shit, he deserved it."

I've said it in another thread, but tonight's experience only reinforces it: I'm done with MSU. On average, they are not people, they are fucking animals and I'm convinced our state would be a lot better off without them. And the next piece of shit Spartan that comes at me with "they deserve it" is getting exactly that reply.

MSU might be the only school in the country where the people that actually went there are bigger pieces of shit than their non-affiliated fans. They teach and breed thuggery and I sincerely hope that their complete ineptitude at the top leads to the university's collapse. This shit is going to keep happening for as long as they exist, because, to sum it up as Brian did: "This is who they are."

Having attended MSU for undergrad before getting my MA at Michigan, I can confirm this. The sports culture bred there is ugly and sick. I've known plenty of decent and kind MSU people, but invariably when it comes to Michigan all of that goes right out the window. I was a Michigan fan when I got to EL--large scholarship, getting out without debt was worth it--and all of this caused me to go from not caring much about State to really, truly despising them. I wouldn't miss it if we stopped playing them in any sport ever again. It's just a chore, and the best possible outcome is that you don't have some idiot yapping at you for a year.

I honestly don't think this is a sparty thing. I think people many in general are trending toward violence atm.

At the risk of an unintended trip to La Paz, I think we can all do better than to use the word thugs to describe Sharty.

Yes, their behavior is frequently abhorrent, but at the end of the day referring to any group that includes black kids as "thugs" makes the speaker look bad and, despite any intentions otherwise, racist.

Goons, assholes, fuckwagons, troglodytes, shitstains, rapey pieces of shit... we can do better.
