Thought experiment for 2121

Happy holidays, hope all are well. To distract anyone who needs it from the holidays, here’s a sci fi thought experiment.

A family member (Michigan PhD) is one of the world experts in AI and Esports. Several of his students are gunning to be the first in the world to be head coaches in professional sports. They have no or relatively little athletic experience outside of video games.

In 2121, will Michigan football be more likely to have a coach who’s tie is to Michigan football as a player or a gamer? Or both...???

Btw, speaking of the future, I watched the Netflix film "The Midnight Sky".

George Clooney plays  a scientist who discovers Jupiter has a moon that is habitable called K23.

They flashback to his younger self and he is giving a speech about his discovery and in the after party gathering, a woman comes up to him and asks:

"Oxford? and he says no....Michigan "

So we can count this movie as one where UofM is mentioned.

The movie was very interesting but a tad slow.

I also used to dabble in getting drunk while high. Words of wisdom, no one else is on your level, it's better to keep your "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy" in your own mind.

My concern is that we still don't have any DTs or CBs in the 2118-2121 recruiting classes.

Regardless of the coaching, how are we going to stop Ricky White's great-great-grandson on those dreaded fly routes?

I'm guessing Michigan football no longer exists. Either football itself is gone or colleges have gotten out of the intercollegiate athletics business entirely.

So, this would be a first, as a coach, but similar things have happened.  Nissan held a contest in conjunction with Gran Turismo and the winners became drivers for Nissan’s new team.  It actually worked out pretty well.  Now, for this, I think these folks would be more geared to playcalling and route creation.  I think half or more of the success of a coach is credibility.  No 18 year old kid is going to trust a coach who only has gaming experience.  I don’t doubt that they know formations and would do a great UFR and film breakdown, but being a coach is way more than just that.

If I had to serve with a fellow marine who either made it out of basic training or was world champion at call of duty, I wouldn't even have to think about it.  Playing games, which merely simulate real conditions, is a poor means of measuring whether someone can do something in real life.  God help us.

This is accurate and fair. However the question was about coaching aka leading and scheming. Your comparison would be more relatable to a video gamer trying to go be a football player, and that’s not the question. I agree with your point tho! That said, someone who shows a great grasp on military strategy based on video games may not be a bad choice as someone to be in charge of troops heading into combat, which I think more appropriately pertains to your analogy. That said, if I’m heading into battle and you’ve never shot a real gun or been shot at, never trained in the swamps and mountains and ran 5K with your rucksack on etc, no way in hell I care what you have to say
