thiccly OT: mascots on the hot seat in a "cool" place

my old stomping grounds has a new attraction for the whole family.  this part of chicagoland is both wonderful and tragic at the same time.  check out the lovely little calumet river valley if you visit.

glad to be a wolverine and basically mascot tolerant.  even these guys are starting to feel the heat.

If that's the 4th most offensive mascot or name, then we must have made a lot of progress.

I mean, don't get me wrong.  I find Notre Dame offensive.  But, it has nothing to do with the annoying mascot.

To hell with Notre Dame!

The test for me is whether the folks represented find the depiction offensive. FSU's case is complicated - the Seminole Tribe of Florida endorses the use of their name, consults with the University and helped FSU with both the manner of representation and nomenclature - Osceola and Rengegade are referred to as symbols, not mascots.

The Oklahoma Seminole Nation condemned FSU's use as well as Native American depictions in sports generally. Their opinion certainly matters too.

They were clearly outdone by the Rhode Island School of Design, whose mascot is "Scrotie the Scrotum".

If OSU had any balls, they could have come up with a much more menacing mascot.

EDIT:  Before someone complains to the mods that this is offensive, please note it has not been ranked as one of the most offensive mascots!

The entire Irish half of my extended family loves ND precisely because of the leprechaun and the team. The Indy Star staff is a bunch of gobshites.

A Deep Thought on Mascots:

"I hope in the future Americans are thought of as a warlike, vicious people, because I bet a lot of high schools would pick ‘Americans’ as their mascot." --Jack Handey

Notre Dame should have gone all out and included props with the mascot: a whiskey bottle and paddy wagon to pick up the mascot at the end of the game.

Btw, what do you call an Irishman sitting out in the rain?

Among the other things that are offensive to Irish but people don’t give a shit: Paddy Wagon

It’s called a Paddy Wagon because of all the Irish it transported.

Who exactly is offended by these, would be my biggest question…

Osceola and Renegade are endorsed by the Seminole Tribe. Clearly they, as a general group, aren’t offended by them. So any survey that list them as the MOST offensive, loses their credibility. Same with Vili and the Leprechaun. Hell, what makes the SDSU mascot any more offensive than Sparty?

IMO it’s not the place of random people to be offended FOR other groups of people. And it’s silly that we’ve given them that power. If the Seminole tribe isn’t offended by Osceola, native Hawaiians aren’t offended by Vili, Irish-Americans aren’t offended by the Leprechaun/Fighting Irish name, who the hell is anyone else to find them offensive?

I know the topic has been one of some controversy here before, but I am quite at piece with the fact that we don't have a mascot running up and down the sideline or trying to catch aberrant passes beyond the back of the endzone. You don't need that sort of assistance when you have so many visitors and staff present each game and all you need to do is tell them to occasionally look for in-flight footballs, people, etc...

It's rich that the group that did this study is from Illinois. The Fighting Illini are still pissed that they can't have their beloved Chief Illiniwek jumping around like an idiot, doing nothing that has anything to do with Native American culture.

As an example of an unoffensive mascot, I present my daughter, who was Otto for 3 years.
