Texas Tech Transfer Nimari Burnett - Michigan Has Not Reached Out

Submitted by Matt EM on January 8th, 2021 at 5:27 PM

Have fielded a ton of questions via Twitter/DMs, but wanted to make this a board exclusive. Have verified that Michigan has not contacted Texas Tech transfer and former offer Nimari Burnett.

Doesn't mean the staff won't kick the tires (Burnett isn't officially in the portal just yet), but that's where things are as of now.

I don't think M needs him.  Would be nice to have for sure but with Zeb on the roster and the freshman guards coming in I think M will be ok.

Keep in mind that everyone on the current roster gets an extra year of eligibility because of the pandemic.  Eli Brooks and Mike Smith don't feel like draftable NBA players to me since the NBA Draft is a lot more about potential/measurables/athleticism than college production.  One of Brooks/Smith should stay if not both.

Tell him he is welcome, but he WILL compete for playing time with the bench. If he plays well enough, he can compete for a starters role. Take it or leave it, bud.

I thought Burnett went to TT because of what the bagman delivered. There was a hidden $ in Matt EM’s write up about it a while back. If that’s what is driving his decision’s then no thank you. Good luck to him but I see him pulling a Khalil Whitney and trying to go pro now.

My opinion here, as opposed to reporting. But I think for Michigan a lot depends on what, if any, we have coming back from the group of Smith/Brooks/Brown/Franz. If we get one of those guys back, the need for Burnett decreases a lot. But if not, we're relying on freshman exclusively in the backcourt next season. Now all of those guys are extremely talented, but Burnett has some college experience at the HM level for a successful program. His offensive numbers weren't great in a limited role with minutes that were inconsistent, but he was certainly good on the defensive end and was very good as a HS prospect.

Matt, provided neither Brooks nor Smith come back next year, how do you see the pg position working out? Do you see Zeb as having what it takes to play the true pg position or is he gonna be more of the scoring pg type? The other night was one of the only times we have been able to see him in extended minutes with starters, what did you see?

Zeb is going to be a physical upgrade from either Smith/Brooks, the question is whether he can improve his ability to make correct decisions at the B10 pace. He looked much more comfortable on both ends of the court in garbage time against Minnesota.

Hard for me to really project his spatial awareness development, but my guess he's going to be a solid rotational player toward the end of next season at minimum. He possesses great positional size/length/athleticism and has some shiftiness off the bounce and vision.

I don't remember if you have scouted Nimari-live??? His tapes were very good-excellent vision/facilitator, finished well and had a good stroke and range. From his tape I liked him a lot.

Otherwise, clearly expectations did not match up well. 5***** kids used to being the star with the ball in their hands getting inconsistent minutes would not predict good results.

We don’t have any spots left unless someone transfers or Franz goes to the NBA. I’d rather see Franz come back than Burnett come here. If we have multiple spots open up then fine. If it’s just Franz, I’d rather see us go get a big man that will provide us some experience for 2022 when HD, Diabate and Johns are all gone.
