So, this dude was an academic all Big-XII player last year and Michigan can't get him in?  I'm guessing that's what's going on but who knows for sure. I know Seth has mentioned it a lot and said he even had trouble with credits transferring. So did I. Only some of my high school credits counted towards my degree and same for some classes I took at my local community college during the fall of my junior year.

I mean, I was a total disaster in college, but I came into U of M on pace to possibly graduate a whole semester ahead of schedule; but I ended up graduating a semester behind. If the university wants to be a leader in making college more affordable, it can start by re-evaluating these policies (but I guess that's the whole point: they can rack up a lot more tuition this way).

It just seems like the U is unnecessarily particular about these things. the 1:1 course match thing is silly. There may be some cases where it makes sense if there's a completely different major and none of the course work lines up at all, but it would seem like completely disregarding someone's completion of a course at a major university as irrelevant to their education overvalues Michigan's classes and undervalues those at other schools. I took some classes at Michigan that should barely count as college education. We aren't THAT special.

Yeah, same. I did some great work in those classes and felt like they were very instrumental in forming the core of my education. And at the same time, like you, I took some courses at U of M that were kind of a waste of time and I only took them to get some easy credits out of the way.

Also, I imagine that the fact that I took several college courses in high school was a factor in my admissions. I'm sure that's pretty appealing to the admissions team and they want students who take advanced courses. It's weird (and frustrating) that they would put an emphasis on that but then turn around and reject many of the credits from those same courses.

Hell if i know. I’m not an insider and will never claim to be. I also happen to know how Michigan treats transfer credits isn’t great but not really out of line with how many schools treat credits and don’t think it’s nearly the problem this blog makes it out to be.

There was a report on Shannon specifically that said the transfer credit loss would have required him to take a spring class or two and he was ok with that. Maybe that report was wrong, but when the other side of the debate says things like Michigan admissions won’t accept juco transfers when we have 3 juco transfers currently on the baseball team it’s tough to take them seriously.

Its not the same at all and its a critical difference for two reasons. One it makes the choice the players. If the person is willing to sacrifice some credits they can play at Michigan. Examples of this include Shea Patterson, Charles Matthews, Leigha Brown, Steven Threet, etc. Given that its the players choice it goes back to the recruiting pitch.

And the second reason it matters is both because its level of impact and how it compares to other schools. In the case of Shannon we have a report from his camp saying it was going to be a class in the spring. That isn't some major barrier to transferring. And second, most schools restrict transfer credits, the idea that its some Michigan specific policy is just false. We have no idea if Illinois is also going to require Shannon to take an extra class or two.

You claim people know its not an admissions issue but people keep peddling false statements like that Michigan admissions won't accept junior college transfers or that nobody can come if they aren't a grad transfer. Students transfer into to play sports as non grad transfers literally every single year from every type of academic institution.

Not impossible we slow played him a bit.  What if Juwan thinks Diabate/Houstan both want to come back?  Adding Shannon could push Houstan to the portal if Diabate comes back.  Shannon plus everyone back would be a huge minutes logjam at the 3-5 spots.

I'd be thrilled to have Diabate and Houstan back plus Jaelin Llewellyn.

Lots of work managing all these moving pieces for Juwan.  Stay tuned, I guess.

i think its debatable which 2 of the 3 you'd have between diabate, houstan, and shannon. What is not debatable is that this is a recurring theme in football and basketball. we are continually playing with one hand tied behind our backs.

Bringing back the same team next year makes me think we are an 18-10 kinda team... but certainly not moving to elite. No, shannon doesnt get us there, but a couple impactful transfers gets us closer than rolling out the same team.

Duke and other elite academic schools dont seem to have a problem with this... UNC... they find the elite transfers and go get them. We find them, pretend to get them.

Also wtf with illinois - how much more do they need to flounder before guys stop. The elite guy from LSU picked them, and his brother signed up the next day. What is the illinois allure?

HAHAH.. Cmon... running it back with the same team should EASILY put us in the top 5?!

That might be one of the most ridiculous things i've read on here - no hyperbole. sure, they might improve, how about the fact that so many guys were fringe or non-contributors. what makes you think they'll all take this incredible leap?

Who are the defenders on the outside? Where is the scoring coming from? Who is the emotional leader of the team? A team that got beat by some bad teams and beat a couple good ones is going to run it back and be better, with what appears to be limited help from the portal?

The top 5? Appreciate the Friday afternoon larf at work.

Anthony Wright seemed to say on Twitter that Shannon ran into credit transfer issues at Michigan.  It will be frustrating if that's true at Michigan but not Illinois.

If this has to do with U-M's draconian admissions process for transferring students, then Warde needs to get his butt out of his chair and start trying to make some changes in the bureaucracy.  The transfer portal will have a big impact on Michigan's competitiveness going forward and if the only people they'll let in are from the Ivy League or Williams, we're in trouble.

I mostly agree, however, they don't need to overhaul the entire admissions /transfer process.  Maybe they could find a middle ground where they could, gasp, give the worthy more academic athletes a little longer leash (they surely already do to some extent)?  I'm not saying you let in the dudes who are doing the minimum, but for a guy like this it seems like they are too rigid.

"If this has to do with U-M's draconian admissions process for transferring students"

It has nothing to do with a draconian admissions process.

It has to do with departments limiting the maximum number of credits they allow to transfer and earn a Michigan degree.

The players are getting admitted - but their credits aren't transferring.

" Warde needs to get his butt out of his chair and start trying to make some changes in the bureaucracy. "

Are you under some illusion that the AD has the ability to tell academic departments to change their criteria for awarding degrees?

What a surprise! ... I'm shocked! ... Ohh, my pearls need clutching!

Said no one ever, when consider a not-grad transfer into Michigan...

What was Terrance Shannon's major at TTU? TTU has all the standard degree programs you expect from a major university. However, if he happens to be in a program like Restaurant, Hotel, and Instituional Management or Retail Management, I fear he will have credits that won't transfer. IIRC, this was an issue with Nojel Eastern when he was transferring from Purdue.

I can't imagine he would pick Illinois over Michigan for purely basketball reasons, given the current state of Illinois' roster.

Funny how all the current players are bailing on Illinois but this dude is gonna sign up to go there? You might want to ask a few questions there fella!
