On Tap: Another Great Weekend In College Football

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

We don't get Oregon/Arizona, but UCF/BYU and Stanford/Washington St. on Thursday and Friday which should be at least somewhat interesting.

But Saturday we get another main course of awesome. Which matchups are you most looking forward to?

12:00 PM Texas vs. No. 11 Oklahoma* ABC
12:00 PM No. 13 Georgia at No. 23 Missouri CBS
3:30 PM No. 2 Auburn at No. 3 Mississippi State CBS
3:30 PM No. 9 TCU at No. 5 Baylor ABC ESPN2
3:30 PM No. 12 Oregon at No. 18 UCLA FOX
6:00 PM No. 7 Alabama at Arkansas ESPN
7:30 PM LSU at Florida
9:00 PM No. 3 Ole Miss at No. 14 Texas A&M ESPN
10:30 PM USC at No. 10 Arizona ESPN2

That's a full slate of games from noon to 2am EST. I included LSU/UF because it's two big name teams in termoil and sometimes it's fun to watch a trainwreck that's not your own. Provides perspective and makes you feel a little less alone.

For the first month of the year I moaned and groaned about how bad the matchups were. This next month is going to be something special. Some folks said last weekend was the best weekend of CFB in 20 years. This weekend should be right up there as well. The next two are damn good too.

Michigan not included, what are you most looking forward to from this list?

I suggest you get the 2 TVs set up soon!

Pulling for RR to stay undefeated.  I would also like to see Ole Miss and Miss St remain undefeated because it is such a cool story for their state.  It's not like they have that much to cheer about, other than a lot of great blues.

I hate to add to the hype that is ESS  EEE SEE  Footbaw, but man I'm looking forward to a few of those games.

2 Auburn @ 3 Miss. St.

3Ole Miss @ 14 Texas A&M

and I'm hoping that Arkansas can pull the upset at home over 7 'Bama.

Can't Wait!

USC and Rich Rodriguez.  I am pulling for Arizona, and not just to spite anyone with responsibility for firing Rich Rodriguez, or even primarily so.  But I think it is an exciting team, and I apply the same rule here I apply to NFL games and etc.: all else being equal, I am going to root for the Michigan guy.

Pretty intrigued by most of those 3:30 games. Kind of interested to see how Arkansas' running game fares against Bama as they look to bounce back after last week. That LSU Florida game could have some coaching search implications, as well. Will Les see greener grass (HALOL) at Michigan? Will Florida need a new coach? Could that be Dan Mullen? Will I stop asking myself questions? Stay tuned.

I don't have a good feeling for Miss St. against Auburn.  However, I'll be sold on them if they have a solid outing (even if it's a loss).  They looked damn good last week, but the SEC West is a marathon.

It will be interesting to see if Ole Miss comes out flat. There really isn't a bad game to watch in the SEC. I think this may be the end of Arizona's run but I'm pulling for them.

For the 2nd week in a row you left out the biggest matchup of the week - UM vs anyone they play. Cumong man - the nation awaits.

Well the Big 12 and SEC matchups at 3:30 PM are most interesting.  Baylor has played no one yet but seems to have a legit defense for once (maybe).  TCU is coming off a huge win so can Patterson get his guys emotionally back up - will be difficult.  Have to imagine the winner of Auburn Miss State goes to #1 as FSU has not been impressive this year.

Ole Miss - same issue for emotion as TCU.  Having to go on the road after a big emotional win at home usually trips up all but the best teams.  That should be a good matchup of 1 team that is focused on defense versus another that doesnt know what defense is.  Rooting for Ole Miss if only to force Sumlin to realize he needs to play defense at some point his career.

LSU-UF might be a 3-2 scoreline with those 2 offenses. I'll pass on that one.

If Arkansas can beat Bama it will be delightful.  I think Saint Nick is something like 4-3 in his last 7 games. Arkansas will be rested after a week off after a heartbreaking loss to A&M and if Big Bert wins the shouts from MGo of "Bring Big Bert back to the Big 10!!!" will be immense with an Arkansas win.

Will be watching for the flying Rich Rods to beat USC late that nite.

mgowife and many friends went to USC, and games at the coliseum, with pre and post game tailgating were always fun.   i also am glad that rich rod's team is doing well, having nothing to do with any angst against the admin for kicking him out.  i think he was a decent guy who didn't work out, and if he wins again this weekend, kudos to him.  heck, he's ranked 10th right now so kudos already.

I have to think that TCU-Baylor could be a fun game to watch potentially. Both teams are averaging more than six yards per play on offense right now, I believe, which isn't bad at all. Also, both teams are averaging about 0.5 points per play too, so I am thinking that it has the potential to be something of an old-fashioned Big XII shootout.

I love college football generally, but given our coaching situation, I am looking at two games, in particular:

1. Auburn v. MSU (NTMSU, but kinda) - I will rename this this "Non-Harbaugh/Miles Dream Coaching Candidate Bowl". Many on this blog have stated their desire to poach either of these underpaid but elite coaches. Not going to happen, but man would it be nice.

2. LSU / Florida - this one might actually have some impact on us. If Miles loses again, there is a real possibility that he the LSU fan discontent with him increases. Not saying that he would ever be fired, but if Michigan were to come with a $6 million offer, perhaps LSU doesn't fight so hard to keep him. And, with enough discontent, perhaps he doesn't feel as conflicted about coming home to save Michigan. Secondary benefit of a Florida win is that we don't want muschamp to get fired this year. Otherwise, we are competing with Florida - a close to equally storied program and one that has certainly been better in recent years. I have no faith in our AD to beat out Florida for a top coach (cough, Mullen, cough) if we go head to head. Best for us if Muschamp survives and a win against LSU will go a long way.

That USC vs Arizona game is of real interest to me. For Arizona to go from unranked to 10 just seemed goofy to me. Other than Oregon they've played a bunch of close games against some teams that aren't so good, so it'll be interesting to see if they can hold onto that ranking.
