The Superstar Takeaway

Submitted by DetroitDan on March 2nd, 2021 at 10:33 PM

Ayo is overrated.  Okay -- I'm joking.  Michigan was overrated.  But still, the point is that Illinois would be better without the superstar deference to Ayo.

Secondary point-- What happened to Franz?  He seemed horrible on both offense and defense.  Perhaps his prowess has been overhyped?  Will this affect his draft status?

It's good that Michigan doesn't have any superstars. We're poised to win the Big Ten because there are different stars on any given night.  On some nights every one of our potential stars are flat.  But these are few and far between.

Not sure if he's the same guy, but there's a "Detroit Dan" who is a regular poster on a Loins forum where I occasionally lurk who is an outstanding regular.  Many of his thread comments I've seen since he joined the MGoBoard seem to indicate he might be the same DD.

If he is the same person he's definitely welcome here. And since he's new on this board I prefer he learns the ropes here, even if garnering a massive# of negs on this OP is part of his learning curve.

You're newish so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.  Your own personal unique after-game take is a "snowflake".  We have one big ole thread for everyone to post all of their snowflakes, because this site is not formatted to have 1000 snowflakes pushing everything else actually newsworthy into oblivion.

Yes, that's exactly what the MGoBoard snowflake threads are for.

During football season one of the mods posts 3 different snowflake threads IMMEDIATELY after each and every game: one for the coaching, one for the offense, and one for the defense.

During basketball season it's not a formal process and snowflake threads are nearly always started by a random MGoUser. Most but not all games are followed by snowflake threads.

Thanks you for taking a look at his posts, East Quad. I'm 100% confident that Detroit Dan is not a troll and not going to be a problem on the board.

To everyone: I do understand the negvotes to DD's OP, it was something that belonged in the snowflakes thread rather than a new thread.

But let's not eat our young (though I suspect DD is older than most of us, myself included). I'm pretty damn sure he'll not repeat the mistake of posting another subpar thread starter.

We have a college superstar in Hunter Dickinson. He just had an off game. It happens.

We also have stars in Franz Wagner and Isaiah Livers. They too had off games.

It was just a bad loss. The entire team was off.

While it's a bad loss, getting humbled like this can be a positive in the long-run. Sometimes a loss re-focuses an elite team.

Agree completely!  Take this as an opportunity to become grounded and refocus.  Much rather this game happen now than in the NCAA Tournament.  Every good team is guilty of becoming complacent at times.

This is a great team overall, we will learn, get better, win the Big Ten, get a #1 seed and make the Final Four.  I couldn’t be more excited!

This team has always been a bit of a paper tiger.  As soon as we face elite size athleticism, particularly on our 2 very small guards, things fell apart a bit.

Is Michigan still a good team - absolutely.  Is all this nonsense about them being the best team in the Big Ten over the last xx years true - not even close.

MSU is going to give Michigan issues this week, because they have the athletes on D (their offense is another story).  Athletes that Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, don't have.

Michigan REALLY needs to avoid teams like Baylor, West Virginia, and Texas in the tournament, as those teams could really eat them up.

Wagner doesn't have a pull up game generally and his outside shooting is still just ok/good. He's a tree, but not a hyper athletic tree.

All that being said, he's more than capable of anything he needs to do against 9/10 teams he plays. Just have to find ways to put him in successful position the 1 or 2 times he won't be able to giraffe his way into the lane and finish like he has often this season. Still a really good player.

Defensively, the over aggression 35 feet from the basket has been a minor annoyance of mine, but it hasn't had any negative repercussions until last night. It's fun to watch Brown pester guys from baseline to baseline, but that approach is also likely to draw a foul 35 feet from the hoop for 0 reason (like it did last night) or give someone a full speed run at the basket starting from midcourt. Same with Brooks, albeit closer to the 3 point line. When teams like OSU/Illinois have guards that can get to the rim and finish (and happen to be 2 or 3 inches taller than Brooks) there's no need to get up in their face at the 3 point line. Step back a foot, it's ok. If they go Duane Washington level hot from the outside, so be it. Letting them get into the lane and make plays AND hit from the outside is the worst of both worlds. I don't get the tight coverage and showing the guy a particular direction by hedging so hard. Giving a guy, even if he's not great going left, a clear lane to the left isn't always a great idea IMO.

Will also be interesting to see how they work the offense IF they ever run into another team with a big that can handle Dickinson 1 on 1. When he can go to work on a guy like Garza and got 6/11 for 15 points the offense works. When Maryland has to double like crazy and he kicks the ball out to start the zip passing to an open 3, the offense works great. When neither of those 2 things happens, well we kind of saw that last night. But it also takes a top 5 team with a 7 foot 285 pound center to do it. Not many of those running around out there in the tournament field.

Why is a thread with a score of -60 still up?   Shouldn't there be a negative threshold that causes one to be deleted?  Otherwise, what's the point of voting on these?

Every one ... is (not are). The subject is singular, therefore, the corresponding verb needs to be singular.

It's a pleasure pointing out your error. :)
