Student Section to Create Color Coordinated Block M
Could anyone shed some light on the above mentioned topic. I recieved a twitter from nicoleauerbach this morning:
There will be a color-coordinated Block M in the student section of the Big House this Saturday.
Has this ever been done before? Will the Block M be blue and the rest of the student section maize? Any insight from students would be great to hear.

Happens all the time now, its M is blue, all of student section is maize.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:09 AM ^
I have been in all the block M's this year and last year and it is a blue M

I always thought it would be brilliant for the athletic department to shell out the $500,000 or so (maybe less?) to put 109,000 t-shirts around the bleachers. It would be awesome to see one game with full color-coordination. I'm hoping it gets done for the first night game next year. Either maize or blue, it'd be money well spent, in my opinion.

I've often thought the same thing. Honestly, that's how I thought Iowa did it last week. Apparently their fans are just that good with fasion. Iowa; who knew?
October 5th, 2010 at 11:23 AM ^
They planned that thing for months and really put a lot of effort into making sure everyone knew about it. And it really paid off, probably the most impressive color coordination I've seen (Boise comes close). I'd like to think we could do that but in my heart I doubt it. We can't even get everyone to wear maize for a maize out.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:44 AM ^
for variety -- they have different schemes for different games.
October 5th, 2010 at 12:37 PM ^
~36,000 shirts.
October 5th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
No doubt it would be expensive. And the AD couldn't expect everyone in attendance to have and wear Maize. That's why I was thinking coordinating everyone wearing Blue would work. Either that or pay for shirts for everyone. It'd be worth it this one time, for the first game under the lights, I think. And I bet with that amount of shirts, a bulk order would end up costing even as little as $2-3 per plain Blue shirt.
October 5th, 2010 at 1:14 PM ^
I would guess that the price of the shirts would be passed along to the fans by including it in the ticket price. So if the shirts are $5 a piece that $5 would just get included in the price of the ticket for that game.
October 5th, 2010 at 2:36 PM ^
I highly doubt the AD would do that to ticketholders. It would most likely come out of the general budget.
October 5th, 2010 at 1:25 PM ^
Our color of dark blue does not read that well on TV, and we're certainly not going to go with Duke blue or UCLA blue.
October 5th, 2010 at 2:30 PM ^
I thought it might look cool if the stands looked dark. But that's just me.
October 5th, 2010 at 1:37 PM ^
I didn't see ANY gaps. Each section was completely filled with the correct color, in the correct tint.
Did they give out the shirts for each section? I can't imagine how they could get everyone in sync any other way. Otherwise, you always have those people that insist on wearing their lucky gray shirt, or who wear their red winter coat because they were too cold.

I went to a U of M / WMU game in K-zoo while I was in school and they were handing out "Black Out" shirts with I think "Fox Sports" sponsorship on it. I'm sure someone would be willing to pay to have their advertising worn by 109k+ people. Are we willing to "sell out" like that? I'd be OK with it if that meant having a very well coordinated color scheme.
As a note, I do realize the difference in magnitude between a hockey arena and the Big House.

Kaleniecki hat trick!
October 5th, 2010 at 11:10 AM ^
Yes it has been done before. I was at the Uconn game and I'm pretty sure there was one then (not the first time though). Yes, blue M and maize surrounding it.
Hope that's right.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:11 AM ^
It was there for UConn but not for UMass.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:11 AM ^
when the sparties ahve the ball from all would be great. I've had a few pulls from sparties for tickets. No way am I selling a ticket to a spartie. More maize please !!!!
October 5th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^
the shirts look like that they give you,,,,and do you give people shit for not wearing the bluw in place?
October 5th, 2010 at 11:59 AM ^
Was it waiting for you on your seat? That would be my first guess, but the student section was such a clusterfuck when I was there (i.e., many people not sitting in their designated seats). Not sure how that would work out. Maybe the distribute beforehand to the designated ticket holder?
October 5th, 2010 at 12:00 PM ^
Answered below. Should have kept reading. Nothing to see here.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^
Thanks for the help. I hadn't noticed the blue Block M on t.v. during the UConn game.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^
All of our student tickets say Maize Out on them so we all (theoretically) wear Maize. Then they have volunteers at the stadium hand out shirts when you present you ticket (if you are in the assigned "M" section). As far as I know, it has been done at least twice before in previous years and it looks amazing! The first year it was put on the corner of the section so it looked a little messed up from the air, but they have since moved it to a flat part and it really looks good with all the Maize!
October 5th, 2010 at 12:58 PM ^
They outline the M in tape on the benches. There are AD people there with boxes of shirts, and if you're inside the M you get one.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:20 AM ^
it would be very cool to pull off a helmet with wings. the 'M' in the picture from Geaux_Blue is very clear, and could easily make a helmet with wings, it would need to be bigger than the 'M', but that coordination and photos/images would be bad ass for a long time.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:53 AM ^
Actually, a winged helmet design is so easy to pull off in Michigan Stadium that I've always been surprised it wasn't done before. The sections in the corners are already shaped in the right pattern.
Look at the map here:
(Apologies for the hotlink to michigantickets.net if I didn't do that correctly!)
If you wanted a winged design in the Champions/SW corner, just have the fans in 15R and 18 wear maize, and those in the adjoining sections wear blue. That's it! If you want to get fancy, you can add some maize to 13R & 20 too, but it's not needed.
I think doing that, combined with alternating blue & maize in the other sections around the stadium, would look amazing.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:24 PM ^
On what coordinating blue and yellow sections could look like...Do you think we could get some advertising dollars from Adidas for having 3 stripes on each sideline?
October 5th, 2010 at 7:09 PM ^
Sorry dude, can't see your pic. It looks great in my imagination though!
October 5th, 2010 at 11:14 AM ^
how sick would a blue out be for the night game...answer:sick.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:22 AM ^
I'm pretty partial to the maize out. However, as long as you can get enough participation one way or the other it would be kick ass. The night game is gonna be total shenanigans! Can't wait.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:18 AM ^
I will have been listening to RATATAT for a solid week leading up to this game. I need some beers and a porch, stat. Oh work week, why do you taunt me!?!?
October 5th, 2010 at 11:23 AM ^
From the Notre Dame game last season. They usually do it in Section 26. That's where the Block M is outlined in the stands. It should be great. I was able to be a part of it last year and it was really awesome. I might wear that blue shirt today.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:34 AM ^
The first time it happened, AFAIK, was the 2008 Wiscy game.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:36 AM ^
Anyone else wish that for Maize outs they would pass out maize shirts or offer cheap ones for like $2.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:39 AM ^
as is our student section in general, of course. I don't see why we can't pull off a maize (or blue) out for the entire crowd, as long as it's publicized in advance and everyone spreads the word. How does Penn State do it? My guess is that EVERY night game is a white-out, so no 'hyping' is required. We can do that too, and it should start vs. ND and never end.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
The maize out for this saturdays game is publicized, it is on every season ticket in big bold letters. " MAIZE OUT" The problem is up untill the last couple years there was not alot of long sleeve or cold weather maize clothing.
October 5th, 2010 at 1:32 PM ^
We should have a couple of night games a year and they should always be full maize-outs.
Simple, predictable, no confusion.
October 5th, 2010 at 8:47 PM ^
to have all night games as maize outs and there is a second. Discussion. Hearing none, all of those in favor of the motion signify by saying aye. All those apposed, nay.
The motion carries unanimously 113,090 to 0.
All night games at Michigan Stadium shall be maize outs.
October 5th, 2010 at 11:43 AM ^
Am I the only one who is not too into this? I mean, it looks cool, but it is a straight ripoff of Penn State, and the whole "maize out" idea is a straight rip off of Duke.
It's an outdoor football game in the midwest - color coordination does not seem necessary. Our students are clever enough - I'd like to see them come up with something new.
October 5th, 2010 at 12:02 PM ^
Contrary to popular belief, Duke's basketball student section does not wear the same colors. In fact, the Maize Rage was one of the first student sections that really emphasized wearing the same color.
October 5th, 2010 at 12:22 PM ^
The whole "white-out" tradition began in 1985, when the NHL's Winnipeg Jets did one in response to the Calgary Flames' "C of Red." Winnipeg swept Calgary, and their fans started calling it the "white-out." The Phoenix Coyotes (Winnipeg's successor) even sued PSU for stealing their idea.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg_White_Out
I the "color-out" idea is great, personally, and the maize color is unique to Michigan. Michigan Stadium used to have little personality (in the sense that you couldn't tell Michigan fans by what they were wearing, and the crowd noise dissipated upwards). Things like the Maize-Out and the new sound reflectors help to achieve that.
October 5th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
No one else has Maize, looks unique and looks like Michigan. Block M is a fixed statement of Power
<br>No one cares who invented it. They care if it has awesomeness. It does, and so it continues
October 5th, 2010 at 1:08 PM ^
btw; since there is always the tendency among older alumni of varying ages to think, "Oh it was so great in my student days, because we did such-and-such..." I say this: current students -- you are awesome. Your Block M's in the Maize Out sections have been fantastic. I wish we had been clever enough to do it. Good work by the current students.
October 5th, 2010 at 9:01 PM ^
I have felt for a long time that since Michigan fans are the masters of the wave we should attempt different versions in addition to what we do now, such as a wave within each section that starts at the bottom and ends at the top, then the adjacent section starts at the top and ends at the bottom, continuing this bottom-to-top, top-to-bottom cycle all the way around the bowl at least for one round.
Another one is when the s-l-o-w wave is done, a fast wave is done in either the same or opposite direction so it overlaps -- call it the rabbit and tortoise wave.
October 5th, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
Everyone wear Blue, and hold maize colored glow sticks.
