Stevie Brown talks at the Big Ten days
Here's some interesting stuff from behind the paywall at Scout:
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&f=1088&t=4545388
A few tidbits:
- Brown said that Coach Robinson is incredibly meticulous in explaining how he wants things done (BTW, Coach Rod also said that Coach Robinson spends most of his time on tackling with the team - thank GOD). Brown said if you don't know what to do after listening to Robinson, "you're stupid."
- He brought up leadership, about how Woodley would walk up to Brown in 2006 and ask, "what are you doing?" Brown would respond that he's watching TV. Woodley would say, "guess you don't want to win," and would just walk away. Brown said it's similar this year.
- He said he's really impressed with both JT Turner and Witty - both high-energy guys. Maybe the depth will be acceptable at CB with the five players we've got?
- He said that communication on D is way better, and mentioned Warren, Obi, and mentioned how the team meets to clear up communication and lining up issues. There is a support system now.
- Odoms runs really crisp routes (THAT'S RIGHT).
- Tate is very accurate.
- Roundtree is a deep threat.
Hot damn. All this talk of defensive communication and support systems has me excited.
Maybe, just maybe... Gerg will fit in after all.
Thanks for the post.
He has to, plain and simple. Or we're in a lot of trouble, and I'm not talking about just 2009.
It pretty much boils down to the fact that as Robinson goes, so goes RR.
Shafer coordinating from the press box was strange. GRob will be on the sideline. That alone will improve communication during games.
I am guessing he didn't tackle many questions. BOOM.
Well played. I'd +1 you for real, but I lack the MGoPoints.
I didn't think RR would let players have their own MGoBlog accounts, much less post on the message boards!
*this is sarcasm for anyone who is confused.
My totally non-expertise-based gut feeling is that Robinson is going to be really good for the team. He's been around the block a bunch of times and doesn't seem to have an ego or personal agenda.
SEPTEMBER 5TH MOTHASUCKA!!!
Robinson has a good track record as a DC. People who are down on him are letting his failed head coaching job sour them. Some guys just aren't cut out for a HC position, but that doesn't mean they can't be good assistants.
Can't wait till kickoff
Echo that
Cool ass name and pic.
Longest off-season ever.
Hey at least we'll have the Lions to get us til then
What? The Lions start after September 5th
he was talking about training camp.
Stevie is a senior and defensive vet so he was invited to media day. I get that. So he can sit up there and talk all he wants. He still sucks. He has personally cost us games and unless and until he ever figures out how to stay in a lane and bring somebody down, it's all just talk. He's an Indiana guy so I've always wanted to see him do well. I'm still waiting. Hopefully, he realizes he's in the stable for the last time at Michigan this year and the bell is ready to go off.
I'm hoping that the new position Robinson has put Brown in will help him out. Put him a little closer to the line of scrimmage where he can excel in run support and not be the last line of defense for the team. We'll see how it goes.
yo whoever put Indy down a point is a bitch. The whole purpose of the points is to prevent people from being beligerent. He stated a legit opinion without being crude. People shouldn't lose points for disagreeing with you. Thicken your skin a little bit.
for your support, Sir. There. Got my point back.
sorry about the -7 that probably was my faiult
"He still sucks." People don't seem to like ad hominem slams like that. They might consider them belligerent and crude, as a matter of fact.
If this is truly the offending phrase, I've been docked for stating a universally held belief among UM fans for four years. Maybe next time I'll say it a little more sensitively, like "He is not a very good major college football player."
Considering I'm +4 on that observation and didn't up myself, I'm guessing I hit the jackpot.
Pretty tough to stop the ball once it's rolling down the hill, huh? All the best to Stevie Brown and sorry for the insult everybody. NO SARCASM, JUST EPINION.
Many here have repeatedly stated that he is generally good in run support, and not so good in pass coverage/ open field.
I cannot make this clear enough: I WANT ADRIAN WITTY TO BE SO AWESOME. HE RULES
Adrian Witty: Two Time All-American, Heisman Candidate, Boutros Award Winner.
It's a giant cross on a chain, yo.
its the very same pair of used man-bottoms modeled in Boutros' avatar.
A former classmate of mine use to go to and play football for Deerfield Beach before transfering to MI. He is very good friends with both Denard and Adrian. He's told me that Witty was faster than Denard before his injury. He also went on to say that he thinks Witty will be in high contention for some early playing time.
From the sounds of it he was right so far. Not saying Witty will start this year, but he may turn into a nice CB in coming years.
Reports so far have said that Witty's pretty fluid and hasn't done too bad. Hopefully we'll see how he does once they hit the pads. I hope he can contribute and become a nice success.
I look forward to the man's first interception, at which point I will lean over towards the nearest fellow spectator and quip: "My, what a Witty retort."
I will then resume sipping from my snifter of thoroughly aged brandy.
hahahahahaha....... there's a +1... i cannot wait to say that
It had to be said.
man this is making me so friggin pumped for the season.
I've made fun of last year's secondary myself, but I never saw Brown pulling any Carson Butlers or anything, or quitting on plays, or skipping practice. The fact that he's the starter means the team would probably be worse without him on the field--like it or not. You shouldn't be wishing him away--you should be wishing a better safety to show up. It's not his fault that CarrRod didn't recruit a better one from 2006-2007.
And if he has CJ Lee-type of cred with the coaches and players, that's extremely important while we're rebuilding the whole team. Let's look at the positives.
// still don't want to see 2008 Stevie Brown on the field, though
Brown speak, he just sounds like a really good kid who works hard, buys in, busts his butt on every play and has a strong will to win. I hope that the position change and coaching from G-Rob will yield a breakout season.
I'd be happy to see him on the field.
this time how about he actually puts a move on Pryor and gets into the endzone instead of allowing himself to be easily ran out of bounds, leading to our first of many embarrassing possessions amounting in a missed field goal and giving all momentum back to the Bucks and in effect ending all hope of a possible upset? That would be nice.
He's a defensive player. He's not Barry Sanders. Let's blame the offense for their shortcomings, not Brown.
agile DB, not a linemen. I don't think its too much to ask to at least ATTEMPT to make a QB miss when he is the last player between you and the endzone. I mean, QBs only practice tackling, um, never. By no means do I think that is why we lost the game, and he did make the pick in the first place after all. It was just an observation. I remember thinking "We're not gonna score" as soon as he was pushed out. And low and behold, if I remmeber correctly, we lose like 6 yards on three plays and miss a field goal.
QBs practice tackling probably about as much as...as much as Steve Brown practices making a move against a defender on the sideline.
I'm not saying Brown couldn't have done better. I'm just saying let's place blame and credit where they're due.
I think Witty's going to be a force. He might not be as good as Warren or Turner, but I do think he'll be better than Cissoko, Floyd, Avery, and several of the cornerbacks on our board for 2010.
there's a huge gap between the starting CBs and the reserves. Boo-Boo has solidified himself as a starting CBs for the next 3 years barring injuries. JT Turner may prove to be a better CB but as far as pure cover corner, no one on the roster is better than Boo-Boo.
That's a pretty big assumption on your part to say that Cissoko has solidified himself as a starter for the next three seasons. I don't see how you could come to that conclusion from the limited amount of PT he had last season.
It's based on what I've heard. Boo-Boo and Warren has clearly separated from the pack. I'm worried about the CB depth after them.
Out of curiosity, why do you think this?
Edit: This was to Magnus.
Witty is more explosive than Floyd and Avery. I also have never been extremely impressed with Cissoko as a shutdown corner; he lacks size and doesn't make many interceptions. Cissoko is a great technician, but I think Witty will be a bigger playmaker. He has great makeup speed.
