Steve Yzerman is Awesome

Behold: Obviously it's hard to make a statistical case for The Captain as the greatest hockey player of all time, but no man in the history of American team sports served as his club's captain as long as Yzerman did for the Red Wings. His legacy is one of unparalleled leadership, though his numbers--sixth all-time in scoring--speak for themselves. I realize Hull has the second-most goals in NHL history, but I think Stevie Y is hands-down the icon of this HOF class.

I especially enjoy the fact that Yzerman started and finished his career in Detroit. In an era where this almost never happens, it is awesome to see that it could become a tradition in Detroit. Lidstrom will surely finish as a Red Wing. The chances of Zetterberg doing it are quite high as well.

My one regret in this life thus far is that I once told an ex-girlfriend that I loved her more than Stevie Y. How young and foolish I was. Steve Yzerman is such a badass capitan that he doesn't need his knee ligaments to win a Stanley Cup.

Yzerman is the epitome of athletes that just have that *thing* Maybe not the most talented ever, maybe not the greatest stats ever, but he just has that *thing* that makes them successful and makes them endearing to anyone who's a fan. (p.s. I know he has some pretty ridiculous stats as well). I refuse to accept anyone under the age of 60's response to "favorite red wing ever?" if it isn't Stevie Y.

For my money, Stevie Y was the fastest skater in the NHL any year he played, and close to the fastest ever. Maybe not clocked (though most years on the clock too), but hustling with the puck, absolutely. The fact that he combined that with great leadership, smarts and puck handling... He belongs on the same wall with Orr.

There are few better iconic video clips in Detroit sports than Stevie's game winning blast against the Blues, and the ensuing celebration. I can watch that a million times straight and not get tired of it.

hamstring injury which ultimately led to him being ineffective and the Wings losing in the next round to the Avalanche? I prefer the goal off Patrick Roy's wallet in the 1997 Conference Finals, Game 2 - that goal gave the Wings the lead and changed the entire series. And most importantly, it led to the Cup.

I watched him from when he was the young scorer on the Dead Things, to seeing the team get better talent and become a Stanley Cup contender, as he became a great two-way player. Great on face-offs, especially when you needed a win. Incredibly tough, playing on one knee. It was amazing how well he played, considering how slowly he got up when he was knocked down.
