My understanding is that if you have your spring game at a field that isn't your home field, coaches aren't allowed to talk face-to-face with any recruits who happen to be there.  But you are allowed to talk face-to-face with them if they are on campus or at your team's stadium.

So the reason it's not at Ford Field is so Harbaugh and his staff can chat with recruits at the game, which is a pretty good reason.

What part of this is not implying that there is a rule that prohibits this from happening.....?

I can't remember us ever having a spring game on espn like Oregon, Bama, LSU, Auburn sometimes have. I think Harbaugh could push the network to broadcast it with nothing much else on at that time of year. Hopefully it isn't a cold night or we'll have about 500 people in attendance which won't look good to recruits.

May not happen this year. It would make some sense if we had 75k plus at the event ...but that never happens on a Saturday Spring Game. Lucky if 30k support the team and charity. We have fans that didn't show up to real games when times were tough. Why would the same people show up for a practice in the cold?

Would be a nice birthday present for me. April 2nd birthday. It's a little inconvenient to have it on a Friday night. It will also be cold.

If people line up at 4 AM at an MDen on a Friday morning in February, I think there will be plenty of people at the spring game.

It's Friday night, you get to go watch a scrimmage and then then head out in Ann Arbor for a beer or three. Sounds promising.

this is going to kill attendance. potential cold weather is bad enough, add an after work commute to the mix. you aren't going to have many non local people at the game this year. fighting rush hour traffic to get to Ann Arbor for a practice? the 14 on ramp is gonna be a mess. I may have to skip this year.

I'm sure I'm not the only mother of a young child who is disappointed. I know lots of families like the spring game because it's an easy way to take kids to the stadium and watch UM football without paying for tickets for kids or worrying about having to leave early and miss something. We live pretty close to A2 so depending on time we might still go, and I'm sure families with young children are not the groups UM is concerned about attending, but it's still disappointing from that perspective.

Raoul's possible explanation re timing of spring practice and lacrosse double-header on April 2 makes a lot of sense. I just wish it could have worked out diffrently.

I know this doesn't apply to everyone but holding the spring game the day before Easter was not ideal either. It seemed to rule the game out for those that chose to travel to spend time with family/friends or prep to cook.

Personally, I am going to scope out the weather when it is close and make the call then. I'm not in love with the game being on a Friday, but at least it doesn't back up to a holiday this year.

Actually, the April 9th ran up against my wedding anniversary too, which I should celebrate - if I wish to at all (and if I don't wish to do so, do I live? That's the question). It was a weekend where a lot was going to be going on, needless to say. April 1st, even if it is a night affair, works a lot better for me, strangely enough.

WD--seriously.  I don't understand all the hate you get but your comments about this have come off as kind of petulant.  It's an experiment.  If it works, everyone will copy it (again) and if it doesn't, we won't do it again.

I think it's going to be fun.

I think WD is right on this. I live in Ann Arbor and will probably not be able to go unless the start time is pretty late. There will be many locals who would ordinarily go that will not. I know it would be a tough sell to my wife.

That being said, it's a spring game and I'm not sure there is a ton of value in high attendance anyway. I'm not too tore up about it.
