Spike to Miss Offseason as He Gets Hip (s)? Surgery

Submitted by alum96 on

Looks like Spike will be getting surgery after all.  Can't tell if it's going to be both hips or just 1.  Word was he needed it on both but since you can only do it one at a time, this will be brutal for him.  Sounds like a similar situation to Max - but double.  Good luck buddy and we'll see you next fall.

I wish he would only do the worst one. We need him for the beginning of the season. And if it takes him 10 games to warm up it might hurt us.

I would actually say the opposite.  We need him full strength for the end of the season a lot more than for the beginning of the season.  We have tons of depth.  MAAR can fill in nicely and will hopefully develop into a star in his own right next year.  It would be nice to have Spike's veteran leadership and poise but we're actually going to have a more experienced team than we've had in a long time.  Also hips are not something to mess around with.  Think of all the people who get hip replacements who DIDN'T play college sports.

Agreed. Doesn't matter much if not in there for the Battle 4 atlantis or Big Ten ACC challenge. MAAR, Dawkins, Walton, and knock on wood Levert can carry it when we're playing mostly teams like South Carolina Upstate. It would really hurt us if he wasn't 100 percent again in big ten play, the big ten tournament, or the ncaa tournament.

I can't imagine hip surgery is fun. Let alone having to be operated on twice. Why would you want anything other than having him be pain free? If he only did one, Spike would be in pain for about a year and a half just so we could have depth at the position. Sounds like a selfish opinion. He is a student-athlete. He seems pretty tough to have played though it last year especially with his style of play.

Really depends on the individual.  My aunt had hip replacement surgery and recovery was much easier than she thought, so she elected to have the second one done instead of putting it off.  And that was a full out replacement on a 50+ year old woman.

I would hope Spike's issue is less severe/invasive and with his younger more healthy body I hope he heals faster.

I hope he chooses the surgery that takes care of the issues he feels are the most important, and gets him to the place he feels is best for him in the least amount of time...I assume he's thinking with his basketball hemisphere as well as his regular person hemispere

Is there any chance he takes a redshirt next year? Say he's not fully recovered until halfway through the season and the team is playing well- MAAR could get time as the backup PG.

Hopefully this won't cut too much into the season and he has a quick recovery. Probably the right decision to get this done now instead of risking further injury. Gotta think long term as well.

"The worst part is, I have to get (surgery on) both of them and (the procedures) can't be done at the same time," Albrecht said two weeks ago. "I'd have to get one and then get the other, so my timeframe would be pushed back."

Considering that hip pain like Albrecht has described in a few interviews probably isn't merely a basketball issue but a hauling oneself around every day issue, the only thing that makes sense is to have both of them done and then work your way through recovery. That being said, best of luck to him in his recovery from this and hope to see a 100% healthy Spike this coming season.
