SLC Options

Submitted by Lambeau Schembechler on

My wife's brother is married to a great woman whose dad is an ex-NFL coach.  I just learned that he will be intervieweing HARBAUGH the day before the game v Utah.

Q1: Any questions you would like answered? (be serious.  these could actually be asked)

Q2: I've never been to SLC, but plan to go for both the interview and the game.  Ideas on places to stay and bars to visit would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I got a room at the Ramada at the airport for a pretty decent price, it isn't too far of a drive from the stadium.  I know there's some type of public rail/trolley system in SLC, I saw it when I was there last summer but didn't actually use it, so I'm not sure if it goes anywhere near Rice Eccles.

I paid a hefty sum for my ticket on stubhub, probably too much.  I was reading Utes message boards, and it seems like this game is going to be one of the biggest in the stadium's history, so I figured I would just suck it up and make sure I got a ticket in a decent spot instead of waiting for a potential price drop.

Beautiful area.  SLC extremely conservative.  Places I've stayed (Hilton Garden Inn, etc.) you can't order a beer without ordering food.  (Which lead to a pile of french fries.)  Just not where you go to hang out.  College (Ute) bars close and fun.  Go there for best chances.  Assuming during games, the bars are open and entertaining.  Who knows?  It's SLC.  And it's a strange culture and place.  Don't expect anything.  We're here to pick up Faun Liebiewitcz...

Hilton Garden Inn and Doubletree are very nice and close to the stadium. Ask JH what he thinks about over signing in college football and if he thinks it will be addressed among the Power 5?

Yeah, I can't wait for handshakes which are as awkward as they are somehow epic. I have a feeling that we're in for a few of those and I am intrigued by how they will turn out.

I like this question actually, in other words. It may not stand a good chance of getting a direct answer, but I like it.

If Michigan made a serious offer in 2009, would you have taken the job back then?

I've heard rumors that DB made a lowball offer to his agent (even though he was told Jim would give Michigan a serious look after coaching the Orange Bowl) because Hoke was his guy all along.

Still trying to talk my husband into going to this game. Can't believe it was easier to talk him into the Alabama game.

I think any questions I want to ask Harbaugh, he can't or won't answer. What win does he most want this season? Has recruiting changed since he left for SF and if so, how? (ie social media? Hoopla announcements?) What's been the toughest part of being the UM coach so far?

Honestly, stay up in the mountains and appreciate the beauty of the state and just come down for the game. One of my favorite places anywhere on Earth is Silverfork Lodge in Big Cottonwood Canyon but anyone of them will do the trick. Also, it should let you escape the heat.

If you are downtown, check out Temple Square. Also, a lot of decent little bars have popped up post Olympics. However, this is still Utah meaning their booze laws are often very restrictive and rarely make a ton of sense.

If you are a golfer, there are a ton of mountain courses close to the city that are worth playing as well and you get to drive the ball 40-50 yards longer just because of the altitude.

Sadly, I have a grad school obligation back in aa this weekend and will miss the game. I am mad jealous of all of you guys getting to go.

Both Big (Solitude and Brighton ski areas) and Little (Alta and Snowbird ski areas) Cottonwood Canyons are immediately accessable to SLC, have lodging perhaps with summer discounts, and is probably where you should spend the majority of your time considering the early fall glory that will be going down up there.  Why hang in the heat?  Mountains!

Lots of hotels to choose from, and like a user said above, the Red Line drops you off right by the stadium. Couldn't be easier.

Thankfully the bar scene here is growing, and there are some great ones downtown to choose from: Beer Hive, Whiskey Street (get the fried pickles), Beer Bar, Gracies (becomes a bit "clubby" after 9pm), and Squatters (SLC's original brew pub I believe) are good places to start. If you're looking for sports bars, then Lumpy's and Legends, also both downtown, are good bets.

Question: How do you plan on handling the #1 and #2 jerseys? It was pretty much a fiasco under Hoke. Do you plan on handing them out like other numbers, or will they still hold extra value?

SLC is a ltitle odd, but I've been to some of the bars you noted and would concur. Beer Hive has quite a selection of beers and they pass along a lengthy beer menu. Squatters was one of my favorites in terms of food too. They brew their own beer and have won plenty awards all of which are on the wall. It is more of a restaurant and they have an upstairs that was closed for a private party so not sure what that is like. Whiskey Street is also good. A co-worker and I went to Lumpy's after a suggestion from a local...it was a dive. Very large and dark inside. I didn't think the food was that great either. I don't remember the name but there was a pizza place that had a ton of TVs and the food was good...on the same street as Beer Hive but in the other direction (sorry I don't remember the street). Didn't get a chance to go by the University but I am also looking to get there for the game.

Anyone who's a fan of whiskey/bourbon/vodka, make sure you check out the High West Distillery in Park City. It's expensive (lunch is cheaper), but the food is great and the drink is outstanding.

If you're going there for the game stay anywhere downtown and the stadium is very close. The lightrail is okay. The campus area is small and not much for anyone older than college age. Out and about in downtown SLC you wouldn't really know the difference. No rounds of shots some rules around alcohol that differ but microbreweries and bars all over downtown.

SLC really changed after hosting the 2002 Olympics and wanting to be less stigmatized as a tourist destination. I'm tying a business trip into the game and staying downtown.

Can't wait for Harbaugh!
