Silver lining to COVID19...mgoblog improvements?

Submitted by Gulogulo37 on March 16th, 2020 at 1:30 AM

Seeing as there's almost literally nothing going on in sports, and people are generally advised to stay home and practice some social distancing, it seems like a great time to fix this site! Just a suggestion that occurred to me as, for the umpteenth time, a comment I made put me on the last page of comments in that thread and reset comments seen from 100 back to 50.

If this is a good thread for compiling fixes that are needed, if you use mgoblog in Safari, anytime you leave the window and return, the page jumps to the top of the page. So if you were in the middle of reading a long post, go to check something else, then come back, you are now at the top of the page. Really great design!

Usually, you have a pretty high sunk cost to whatever platform you are on. Migrating all of your current content (articles and threads and users) to a new platform is not trivial (would take weeks/months) and may require site to shutdown for a day or two.

If you can live with some of the shortcomings, it is just better to stick with the platform that you have already.

This does seem like a great time to fix the things that Seth and Brian can sort out.  I know Brian is a code-writing engineer (well, at least he used to be), but I don't know if Seth is.  Nonetheless, it's a good time to sort out the light lift needs.  But I suspect that most of the issues require some in-depth analysis and planning that Brian just won't do.  HUEL may or may not be on commission to resolve this stuff.  Personally, I suspect they aren't.  I think they delivered a service they were paid to deliver - without a good set of requirements.  I also think they botched a few things that they (HUEL) decided not to resolve...

Short and sweet thought...moderate the board or users will leave during this fallow season of sports, and many won’t come back. What are Brian, Seth, and Ace going to write about ??? Where have you gone Lsa2000? Why have you forsaken us Seth?

I'm pretty sure it's a time and effort thing more than a money thing.

Seth has said many times the front page articles get way more views than the board (which some people refuse to believe), but they're not gonna get a lot of article views when there's nothing to write about. May as well invest in a good site and board so we can stop bothering them about it.

No, it's a money thing because they'd have to pay HUEL to spend the time and effort (no one on the current team can do it).

Since the revenue from this site is going to plummet at a time when it would normally spike, they'll have even less to pay the staff for the next couple months.

No possible way they're going to also be able to pay HUEL to make any improvements.

I've got a random one. There used to be an icon next to the picture icon on the far right, and that was how you embedded tweets. But that icon went missing awhile ago, and now you can only paste the tweet link via the chain symbol. Which means you have to click and jump to Twitter to see what it's all about.

I really miss being able to see the entire message within a comment.

I don't understand all the talk of the board being broke.  Clearly it is not, from the non-user perspective.  People that should be paid for the content and traffic are still getting paid and users are still coming to the site.  Mgoblog still exists and without looking at traffic data I would guess is quite active.

Why fix a site that isn't actually broken?
