Silent Verbal & a Welcome Back?

Submitted by Crazy Canuck on

Saw these on twitter this morning and have yet to see anything on here about them.

I can confirm that Michigan does in fact have a silent verbal. Also, get your "welcome back" signs out.

Interesting... Especially cause it's from a Ohio fan. pic.twitter.com/RvoMufrzW6

Also...nice teaser.

When I saw welcome back, I thought Clark...and when I thought silent commit and from OSU site...I figured it was Joe Burrow.

  1. QB - Joe Burrow
  2. QB - Alex Malzone
  3. RB - Mike Weber
  4. WR - Brian Cole
  5. TE - Chris Clark
  6. OT - Grant Newsome
  7. OT - Sam Madden
  8. OT/OG - David Moorman
  9. OG/C - Jon Runyan Jr.
  10. DE - Wheatley Jr.
  11. LB - Roquan Smith
  12. DB - Tyree Kinnel
  13. CB - Damon Arnette
  14. ATH - John Kelly
  15. K - Andrew David

I would never speak for the entire board...but hell, if this is the final list, I'd take it!

...a lot of snake oil on it. Flipping 2 current OSU commits and 2 from Wisconsin as well.

If it had Iman Marshall, Osa Masina it would be wishful thinking, IMO.

Also, 12 if the current number of scholarships, so going to 15 may be the most unrealistic part about it. I still would be having that tough conversation with a couple of the 5th year guys if it came to it. Just depends on what you think is better for the long term future of the program. Definitely don't lock yourself in to a recruit this year just because you have the spot, bank the spot and keep a 5th year if that's the better option.

I Baughlieve.

I only see eight 5th yr seniors and the 2 on defense are starters.  2 of the 6 on offense are OL starters but I recall you said a month ago you thought Glasgow might not come back for his senior year some odd reason, so I guess that could be 1 "hard conversation" in that world.  I don't get chasing away a 5th year senior on the OL myself.

1 is a starting FB so that leaves 3 reserve guys on O.  It would be setting a pretty seriously harsh precedent to say almost any 5th year senior who is not a starter is gone.... so don't bother in the future.  Which is effectively what 3 "firm handshakes" would do this year.

There will be but if they didn't happen this week I don't see them happening until after spring practice.  People are not going to quit the program due to weight training in late January.  And the ones after Feb 4th won't help for this year's class.  Technically they "could" but 99.9% of players will be signed on the 4th.

I actually thought we'd hear of a few this past week, guess not.  So I'd expect the 2016 class to be larger than it currently is.  Scuttlebutt is Harbaugh is telling recruits 6 spots only which would indicate no attrition in next 2 weeks.

understand this year may not be best example since most are contributors but thats what winning programs do.  if youre not a big contributor on the 2-deep, its a firm handshake and sincere thanks / well wishes to 5th years.

championship teams typically cycle thru those type guys and replenish roster with fresh younger talent...its a win / win as those kids receive 4-year scholarships and the program gets to add young playmakers.

managing rosters and competing for titles is not easy nor is it for bleeding hearts.  4 years to earn degrees and PT is fair, 5th years are never guaranteed.  maybe harbaugh will do things differently and win his way and if so, ill certainly roll with him given his track record

I don't have a bleeding heart.  Everytime someone says "but but but it would hurt Malzone or Shane's feelings" I am the first to say the only thing they were guaranteed was a 4 year free education and coaching.  From there you compete - and there will be transfers.

But my point was this year if you want to get 3 more sports out of 5th year seniors you literally are sending a message that every non starter 5th yr senior is gone.  We have 8, 5 are starters.

I've never said Glasgow wasn't coming back.

I've said I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't. I've said I wouldn't be surprised if there were any "shake ups" on the OL.

I've made a POINT not to say players aren't returning because it upsets so many people on this board when you automatically remove players from the team without having ANY information. Which is fine, understandable.

So personally, I may not think someone like Bellomy is returning, but I've NEVER said "Bellomy" isn't returning. He's been on every depth chart I've made.

You completely made that up.

In THIS thread, I never mentioned anything about a 5th year OL not returning or chasing away a 5th year on the OL.

So that point was unnecessary.

I can't say for sure, but IMO, if you polled this board on 5th year's most likely to receive a "thanks and good luck" an OL wouldn't even be at the top of the list.

No one said "almost any 5th year senior who is not a start is gone" either...

Where are you getting this stuff from?

The Mayor is gone for good D Harris is gone for good Crawford is gone for good Kirkland is gone for good Roseboro(?) is as good as gone Then we have Clark (50/50?) and Weber (50/50?) Harbaugh will need lots of snake oil to get the last three back

Would you want D. Harris + Hoke + Borges ... or Harbaugh and our future?  Because that was what the cost for Harris would be apparently.

The Mayor came with an uncle who wanted a job with the university.  Would you like to offer that?  He is also a 6'4 burner with questionable hands who has been falling on the recruiting boards all year.  A tough guy to convert to cornerback at that height.

Crawford is small; I'd prefer larger corners of the 6'0 variety even if he bcomes a very good player.  Odds get stacked against you when you are small -s ee Terry Richardson.

Kirkland, Garrett Taylor, Roseboro are definitely bummers in this group to miss on.  But to have kept them we'd have had to win at least 9 games I assume, and Hoke and his bevy of position coaches that no one in the power 5 conferences wants (except for Manning) would still be here - facing a machine in Urban for the next 5-10 years and a very good coach in Dantonio, who has wiped his pants with Hoke and staff 2 years in a row even when Michigan had 2 weeks to prepare.  So there are pros and cons to every transition, and I'll side with the Harbaugh.

If we get the LB from GA I will consider it a win anyhow.  I dont see any DEs of Roseboro class by recruiting starz unless KLS flips which I dont think happens, so that one stings.  And Taylor looked like a great sized CB - we are going after other great sized one but not as highly starzed as Taylor.

Just because we fell in love with them when they committed means we have to worry about getting them back?

I never understand why we can't just be happy we have a great coach and we're moving in the right direction. We have to have the great coach, go get everything we lost, THEN move forward.

It's not like those were the only great recruits in the country.

That list of possible commits Mr. Yost posted looks good, but I would love to see KLS and Marshall on it. Marshall visiting for three days (Mon-Wed) is a good sign. The length of the visit makes it look really good for Michigan.

The only thing interesting to me in all this Twitter banter from outside sources is the RT by Chris Clark about Weber coming back to Michigan. Might say more about him than Weber.

I just read the OSU thread with the Weber rumor, and I don't think there's much reason to believe the guy. He provided no details on Weber, his source, or why he'd have access to information. He probably saw something public with Weber - that Wheatley visited Weber or Weber followed Wheatley on Twitter - and figured that he'd set himself up to claim some unwarranted insider credit if it happens.

that seems different is the less formal release of info by the new staff.  Fewer PR sessions formally announcing things that seemed to be a staple of past coaching staffs.  The stream of info seems to come more from social media but then there is more room for misinformation too.  Actually think it's better this way because really whether a 17-18 year old commits orally or any other way is not a major news story requiring a news conference.

Don't know about the rest of y'all but come NSD I am very confident that Harbaugh will reel in a very very impressive class.

umm. No staff ever had a "press conference" about a verbal commitment. It's against NCAA rules for a school to talk about kids until they have signed a letter on or after NSD. You can bet that there will be a PC on NSD.

Who Works for a huge Sports Agency here in So Cal as a agent says that Saban and especially Meyer encourage some kids to be silent in the commitment and make them wait to announce so the perception is that the school is a strong finisher. Meyer has done this for years.
