Should the helmet numbers stay?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I really like the helmet numbers and am wondering if they will return for next season. It's encouraging that coach Hoke is open to what the players like so they could be here to stay.

I think they should stay and have an occasional game where the team wears the Legacy helmet. But if the numbers stay, NO helmet stickers!

What's your opinion?

This year the numbers were special to this team 132 yet also represented the 69 team i believe that were the 1st to wear them? something like that. there is the connection to the past of breaking long streaks against our rivals wearing the numbers. If Bo was ok with helmet stickers I definitely am ok with their return. How ever they want to roll is fine with me. i think if they stay they should match the color to the helmet better and more cleanly placed..or permanant paint instead of a sticker.

I don't have a problem with Hoke and the players putting their stamp on the program with the temporary use of helmet number. As long as the official helmet doesn't change. I don't want to see helmet numbers on the helmets sold at mden.

and it isn't interfering with the coaching then the coaches and team can make up their own minds. It would look cool against Alabama but if we lose we should leave them off.

Don't get me wrong, I kind of liked the numbers and grey facemasks at first, but I don't think they should return for next year. If they do return, I'd like the color of the numbers to match the color of the helmet better. Also, the grey facemask should be blue...it just looks better.

Just let the players decide and leave it at that. It doesn't detract from the helmet, and we've had them in the past so it shouldn't get the hardline traditionalists' panties in a bunch. I for one am really indifferent, but I think they are functional and look pretty cool.

All I care about are glitter helmets. Dear gawd, if we ever go glam like TSIO I'll lose my chit. Glitter is for strippers, pickle-puffin ravers & buckeyes.
Speaking of pOSU, let them have the helmet stickers to go with their Barbie dream helmets.
Take the numbers off for the Bama game, we don't want to look like our prey.

I don't have a real strong opinon either way; I do like the look with them, fwiw.

Given how Brady brought them back for the B1G portion of the schedule, I wouldn't mind if he did that again next year.

Fritz. He didnt but them on so why should 132 or 133? I dont like messing with traditions. Thats just me, and Im old. There is something to be said for traditions....they dont change. By definition if a tradition is changed, its not a tradition anymore.

Do we want to be chic and cool like Oregon, or do we want to have tradition and honor? We are College Football for a reason.

Dude, Fritz Crisler completely "messed with tradition." He took our plain blue helmet, which we'd used for a long time, and painted wings and stripes on it. It's only tradition now because his successors decided to keep his radical new design.

I don't like them personally. I really don't like that the maize color of the numbers was not the same shade of maize on the wings. That was very irritating to my marketing eyes.

I despise them, along with the Sugar Bowl uniforms that made the numbers look weak and skinny.

Now little wolverine helmet stickers? Those I've always loved.

Unbelievable that people on this thread don't mind seeing helmet numbers stay. Make the helmet extremely busy and frankly, the no number helmet is famous for a reason. Let the winged design be the only thing on the helmet, for tradition's sake.

Being a traditionalist stick in the mud, I never wanted to see anything regarding Michigan Stadium or the uniforms fucked with. However, I like the numbers AND there's some history behind them. As cool as the old pics of the likes of Rick Leach and Rob Lytle are, with their helmets covered in stickers, I'd prob take numbers over stickers.

The alt-unis, I'm divided on. If the kids in them dig them, I guess I can live with that. (While the simple old bowl in the ground was the greatest place in the world as far as I was concerned when I was growing up, I now think the renovations and additions at the stadium are excellent.)

Now that the albeit awesome return-to-glory / Team 132 / Hoke's first / UTL season is over I hope Michigan Football returns to a more clean, traditional and focused approach to, in the words of Uni Watch, Athletic Aesthetics. No numbers, blue facemasks, and a consistent approach to away uni's. Just pick one. And fergodsakes don't join in on the uniform stunt of a rival like we did in E.L., especially having the players change uniforms after warmups (did that REALLY happen?? I wasn't able to see the whole game on TV that day but if it did, what a way to distract your team.)

Anyway ... no numbers.
