Shaun Nua Appreciation Thread!
Time for many of you louts to eat crow!
And show a little love to one of the most unfairly treated members of the team.
He took a lot of grief for something that clearly wasn't in his control.
Hey Coach Brown:
But ever since he was released from the maniacal tyranny of "Mad Don Brown", he has contributed to the biggest (literally) turnaround in the program: The Defensive line, especially the interior.
Just since January, he:
Helped close recruiting on
Rayshaun Benny (275lbs)
George Rooks (260)
Signed Ikechukwu Iwunnah (275)
Added transfer Jordan Whitley (348!)
Got them in the weight room:
Hinton (310) +5
Smith (328!) +21
Jenkins (275) +10
Jeter (325) +6
Spieght (310) +20
Benny (292) +17
Rooks (270) +10
Giudice (275) +25
Iwunnah (306) +31!
= +140lbs!
That's like having a 12th man on the field in the interior Dline,
of course he's only the size of an oompa loompa:
:
On top of all that, Coach Nua drove to Indiana last Friday to close the deal with Kenneth Grant, a 335lb! Dtackle who he recruited the whole way and got him to commit rather than wait on OSU.
No more "girly man" DTs 'round here
Obviously, their play on the field speaks for itself, and although I would chalk most of that improvement to the 9 on 7 drills they ran against our Offensive Line, Coach has them playing at a much improved level. Even though they weren't dominant last weekend, shout out to Mike Morris, Chris Hinton and Dave Ojabo on making great plays to seal that win defensively even though they were gassed.
So let's give some love to the big guy coaching the big guys up, because we're gonna need them this weekend for sure.
GoBlue!
And for those who wanted him gone: You were wrong.

I don't think the d-line has played that well. When I watch them, they switch between bad and meh, specifically the tackles.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:09 PM ^
Mazi Smith and Jeter still stand up way too much
October 1st, 2021 at 12:31 PM ^
Rumor I've heard around these parts is that Nua is basically only responsible for the Tackles now and they have an analyst(!) coaching the edges
October 1st, 2021 at 12:39 PM ^
Yep, seems like Ryan Osborn is basically the edge coach
October 1st, 2021 at 5:38 PM ^
Ah so he's definitely bad at his job then.
October 1st, 2021 at 7:41 PM ^
What parts are these? Are you a janitor at Schembechler Hall?
October 1st, 2021 at 12:56 PM ^
Holes are blown wide open on the DLine fairly often.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
Can you imagine Zach Charbonnet getting a chance to run through those holes???
October 1st, 2021 at 11:54 AM ^
This is nice but it still seems like a premature victory lap to me.
October 1st, 2021 at 1:31 PM ^
Michigan fans definitely dont do that, what are you talking about?
/s
October 1st, 2021 at 3:14 PM ^
Apparently either Nua’s close family member or his agent has an mgoblog account. The on field performance that Nua is responsible for has been meh at best.
October 1st, 2021 at 11:55 AM ^
Looks like we're starting the Friday drinking thread early for Wisconsin week. This feels right.
October 1st, 2021 at 11:57 AM ^
you had me at the beginning, but my interest waned. recruiting. ok. size. ok. but on-field play? meh so far. Granted, the pieces arent great. But its what we have.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
After last year "meh" isn't an improvement?
Especially since the main issue was they were UNDERSIZED thanks to the last DC.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:14 PM ^
youre right. meh is better, but we did add pieces and the guys who were young (smith and hinton) need to show out. in terms of what we expected from whitley, smith and hinton, id say its been underwhelming, but recruiting isnt a full indicator of future performance. See Rumler, Nolan.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:34 PM ^
I hate to be overly negative because there is already a lot of that on this board but to be completely fair we haven't played a good offensive line yet and even then we have looked meh. Way too early to say
October 1st, 2021 at 12:44 PM ^
yup. and honestly, in my opinion, if our interior linemen were more disruptive and stout, our ends would flourish more. Aiden etc... i know he's doing great, but.. would love it if teams were forced to double inside, leaving guys like aiden, uche, etc... to beast out.
But, like you said... they are meh against meh. there are some OLs coming that will challenge them. You'd think facing our OL would prep them a little at least. lets hope!
5-0. thats all we want this week.
October 1st, 2021 at 2:39 PM ^
I don't believe Josh Uche is still with the program. He is in his second year with the Patriots.
October 1st, 2021 at 1:36 PM ^
Wusconsin has a couple of snow plows on the offensive line. We'll be finding things out for real tomirrow. I'm hoping its not going to be ugly.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
How much does Nua have to do with the increased size? Factors I would rank as more important than Nua, not necessarily in this order:
1. Defensive coordinator with new philosophy
2. strength and conditioning coaches
3. Players who put in the work
4. Dietician
October 1st, 2021 at 11:59 AM ^
Recruiting has definitely picked up for large humans, but I'm going to wait on the celebrations until our existing DL proves that it can dominate the LOS on a consistent, reliable basis against good opponents.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
We can drink anyway, can't we?
October 1st, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
Most didn't wait to call for his head when Wisconsin ran for 359 right up the middle in '19.
And no one is asking you to celebrate, that's why it's an an appreciation thread;
appreciate the work they put in to become more stout and encourage them to continue when we need it most, this weekend.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:43 PM ^
Felt more like a thread about you wanting to dunk on people who wanted him fired, than an actual appreciation thread for the coach. Hope you're not too winded from that victory lap.
October 1st, 2021 at 2:20 PM ^
I've never called for Nua's head, but whatever.
October 1st, 2021 at 1:17 PM ^
If the DL just impedes a good OL, that would be significant improvement over last year.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:50 PM ^
His recruiting has a couple of high 3/low 4 star guys. I guess that's better than other positions but it's not like he is Brian Hartline on the trail.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:04 PM ^
Thank you for posting this the day before our DL faces off against Wisconsin and their famously beefy offensive line, you definitely haven't cursed them at all.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:11 PM ^
Only Michigan fans would think "appreciating becoming a lot more beefy" so they can compete against "famously beefy offensive lines" is a curse.
"Hey team we don't give a shit if you "try" to get better until you win all your games."
What was you're preseason prediction?
October 1st, 2021 at 1:56 PM ^
The dline would have to do a complete 180 from their last two performances vs Wisconsin. Both games were bloodbaths.
Wisconsin combined stats in those games. 108 carries 700 yds 10 TD 6.5 ypc
October 1st, 2021 at 2:33 PM ^
Sweet mother of God. I knew it was bad but when you see it in writing it really hits home. My lord that is a paving.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:39 PM ^
You just should have waited until they played a good O-Line lol.
We'll know more after Saturday but the first 4 games were easy compared to the next 8.
Mine was 8-4, maybe 7-5 and I was trying to be positive after last year.
Anyway, hope you are right.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:08 PM ^
I thought he did well given his size and was a tough kid, but it is nice not having a converted LB at Nose anymore
October 1st, 2021 at 12:12 PM ^
Let's see how they do against Wisconsin, a Oline that has absolutely punked the M Dline, the last two games. I'm not optimistic.
But I did get a good laugh at your idea Nua is responsible for their weight gain.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:28 PM ^
Or that we have 140lb more on the interior line.
If Nua somehow gets the league to permit us 9DTs at once (without losing edge guys or the defensive backfield), I'll appreciate that.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:18 PM ^
I like the positivity, although I think the jury is still out on the line and the defense as an entire unit. I'm in the wait and see camp, we've been burned too many times by Don Brown's top rated defenses that collapsed at the end of year.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Same. I was critical of Nua, especially early on when it didn't really appear he was contributing much on the recruiting trail, and his unit was getting gashed against literally every opponent in 2020 (whatwouldyasayyadohere?.gif).
But credit where credit is due, he did a nice job "flipping" Benny, flipping Iwunnah, closing on Rooks and now landing Kenneth Grant. On the field, I think his unit is spread extremely thin due to Don Brown's inexplicable approach to interior defensive line recruiting. But I think both Smith and Hinton have been solid if not spectacular in their third years, which is typically when you expect that position group to emerge. Hinton in particular played an excellent game last Saturday (this according to UFR, but the gifs seem to back that up). He's one to watch if he can stack back-to-back performances like that.
I'm not sure Nua needs an appreciation thread (although being appreciated is nice). In my opinion he's gone from "liability" to "contributor" on the staff. That's nice to see, and he certainly deserves credit for that. I wouldn't say he's some coaching asset dynamo that is making a huge impact on the program as of now either.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
What a jinx, why would you write this OP the night before a game against a program that the most prolific rushing team outside of the armed forces?
October 1st, 2021 at 12:30 PM ^
To show appreciation for the work they put in trying not to get run on for 300 yards, it's called encouragement.
I know most Michigan fans no nothing about it.
October 1st, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
Your post was one of celebration, not encouragement. Usually you celebrate after you accomplish something.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
Yep none of those guys would have gotten in the weight room without Nua. ?♂️
October 1st, 2021 at 12:31 PM ^
Now coaching DOESN"T matter, cool.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:45 PM ^
You're getting Herbert confused with Nua.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:58 PM ^
You do know that Nua is not a S&C coach and isn't the reason they're in the weight room, right?
October 1st, 2021 at 1:10 PM ^
No. He doesn't.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:23 PM ^
I'm confused...appreciation for what?
October 1st, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
Yes, it's been going on for awhile.
October 1st, 2021 at 12:46 PM ^
For cooking tons of pasta for these guys?
October 1st, 2021 at 12:26 PM ^
I appreciated Coach Nua more before I read your OP.
Let's hope that I appreciate him more again in about 27 hours.
