Selection Sunday
Although Michigan is out, this is one of the best couple weeks in sports! The first week of the tournament is pure sports bliss!!
There are a couple conference tournament finals today!
Yale vs Princeton Do they both make it regardless of the outcome?
Bama vs TX A&M
Dayton vs VCU could they both make it regardless of the outcome?
Houston vs Memphis
Penn State vs Purdue.

When’s the NIT selection show?
March 12th, 2023 at 11:24 AM ^
Per Google search it is 9PM tonight on ESPNU. We could have a home game on Tuesday
Who says M makes the NIT?
Michigan is 2 games over .500, 1 win against a ranked team, and has a home loss to CMU.
Ratings.

VCU has a shiny record but their team sheet is lacking in the advanced metrics and Q1/Q2 wins needed for an at-large. IMO, it's auto bid or bust for them.

Let's win the NIT!

Today's 5 games strike me are fairly meaningless for the bracket and seeding.
Ivy and A-10 are one-bid conferences. There are no bid-stealers left.
The other 6 teams are in, win or lose.
Penn State is probably a #10 right now, I suppose they could make a bracket where Iowa and/or Illinois a #9 and PSU moves up (and Iowa/Illinois down) with a win. But Purdue is likely a #1 regardless, especially with UCLA's loss last night.
I'm personally rooting for PSU to lose today --- I'd prefer a #10 because it maximizes the chances I could see them in Sacramento, where Arizona/UCLA are likely going as #2 seeds (I live in LA).
Interesting thought experiment. Rather have your team win their first conference tourney (incl. making history as the lowest seed to do so) or be able to watch in them in NCAAs?
I would have thought the conf. tourney title would be a no-brainer, but I guess the in-person NCAA game is a rare opportunity, too

It's been a minute since we weren't in the tournament and, if I'm being honest, I can't wait for today to be over. The tourney will be fun once it starts but man, today feels like the final kick in the dong.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:12 PM ^
Completely agree. When the tourney starts I will be fully amped and ready. But today will just feel like a sad dog meme watching the selections.
The final kick in the dick was last week. I am so over this team. I feel bad for them, only because they wasted their potential. And no doubt, they had a shitload of potential. Sad.

In last year's NIT finals Xavier beat Texas A & M. This season they have gone 24-8 and 25-8 respectively, for what that is worth.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:22 PM ^
Since the NCAA field went to 64 & counting Xavier for this year, NIT champions are 20-16-1 in terms of making the NCAA the next year. (the "tie" would be 2020 Texas, NIT champs in 2019 and were on the bubble before the COVID cancellation)
I, for one, really hope we are granted and we accept an NIT bid. The extra game time and reps are invaluable for a young team like Michigan.
No according to JonnyHintz, Michigan doesn’t need any coaching or reps or live game action. All they have to do is get older and they’ll automatically be better. If that works in football it clearly should work in basketball. They should just take the summer off. No reason for reps they just need to be older.
Appreciate your optimism, but that was truly worth nothing, unfortunately...😔

Wake me when the NIT selection show is on TV.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:32 PM ^
Seems like there isn't a lot of mystery around who's in and who's out. According to the Bracket Matrix it's really coming down to:
Last Two In:
- Pitt
- Arizona State
Last Two Out:
- Oklahoma State
- Nevada
I would genuinely feel bad for Pitt if they got left out. I think Bracket Matrix probably has it right here but I wouldn't be surprised if any of these teams got swapped out.
Not that I want the NIT for any reason, but getting another shot at Arizona State and Frankie might at least give me a twinge of March excitement.
ASU made the field of 64. I too would've wanted to see that rematch.

The opening weekend of March madness,Thursday to Sunday, is the best time to be in Vegas. I’ve done it 4 times and every time was the best weekend ever. Now that I’m married with kids I can’t do that on a whim anymore but if you’re able to do such a thing with a few good friends I highly recommend it
It’s unbelievable
One or the most underrated times is conference tournament weekend.
Rejection Sunday.
Remember when we laughed at sparty because they had to play a play-in game & they lost, so they technically didn’t get in. And then we lost to the same team they lost to? Good times
I still laugh at Staee.
Always a good time.
Unided we stand
Yippee
Truth be told, I am just going to enjoy the games today and over the next few weeks. Sometimes it's fun to sit back and enjoy as a neutral bystander, appreciating good spirited competition. B10 championship game should be interesting today, a nice contrast in styles. Too bad that a Dayton playing in the first 4 situation isn't possible regardless of their outcome today, because that is usually fun to watch.
Brandon Johns Jr playing for the A10 title today. He coulda helped us this year
He provided something the other 2 playing PF lacked. Legit size at the 4(T-Will) & Experience/Athleticism(Tschetter). Him playing 15-20 minutes a night would’ve been a huge help with this squad.
March 12th, 2023 at 10:48 PM ^
You remembering the same Brandon Johns Jr. that I am?
I'm intrigued to see what happens with seeding, especially with teams like Iowa, MSU, and PSU. Those are the types of teams that really need a favorable matchup to get anywhere in the tournament, and they're all sort of hanging out around the same space on a lot of brackets.
I'm also interested to see if VCU makes it in - A10 isn't likely to get them both in so that'll be a game to watch.
I assume UM will get a home NIT game coming up this week so that'll be interesting. Would be nice for the guys on the team to end the season with a couple of wins.
In regards to your last comment, I'm....not hopeful for what the stands will look like if we're hosting a game. Seems like the team struggled getting fans to most games this season. Unless it's a good match-up, could be a pretty light crowd. And frankly, I wouldn't blame folks.
Even in the best of times it felt like Crisler was sparsely populated unless a marquee opponent showed up. I'm not expecting huge crowds but it'll be nice to play at home regardless.
Ivy League is a one-bid conference, so Princeton's dancing despite Yale finishing 1st and beating Princeton twice in regular season.
Crazy to think all the kids that transferred from the team last season(Zeb, Johns Jr., Frankie) will probably be playing in the tourney next week. Meanwhile the squad they left is searching for answers before an NIT invite
Now that acceptance is setting in and I moved back from the ledge, I will most likely watch our NIT games if just out of curiosity how the team responds to what could have been.
Feels like it could be one of those situations where they lose in a first round home game to a mid-major who just missed out on a bid, but is looking to something to prove and wants a “statement win” against big bad Michigan.
Sale of exclamation points on the internet today?
Yawn. Am I the only one that things the NCAA basketball tourney is the most awesome spectacle in sports.
If we’re in it.
And I could give two shits about the damn thing when were not. The only team I will be rooting hard to win will be whoever sparty is playing. And I hope like hell they lose in heartbreaking “sparty no” fashion.
It’s still one of the best sporting events out there… I frankly will be glued to my seat on Thursday/Friday to see who gets upset.
Probably not. You're more likely to be the only one who actually sat down to rewatch all 50 some Superbowls without the Browns or Lions ever being in one. That is hardcore.
I get what you're saying, but to each his own.
If this is your take you don’t really like college basketball. You’re a football fan trying to like basketball.
This is greatest sporting event around! Thursday and Friday are unreal days of basketball
I love when an underdog makes a run. If it's all the usual suspects and things go predictably, I watch sporadically. I do think it's the best championship event in sports.
The tourney is always compelling. Michigan being in it is the icing on the cake.
I am 100% in the same boat, i watch every game i can...until we're eliminated, which of course is before it even starts this year. Once it no longer has anything to do with us I lose all interest. Similarly in football, when we're good, i watch a lot of games, when we suck, i have very little interest in whether other teams win or lose. Can't even enjoy schadenfreude if we're not in a place to look down on those having a bad time!
I need the Hockey team to carry me through to football. College Football Risk is not going to cut it.
Got my whole work calendar blocked off on Friday afternoon. Working, but absolutely no meetings. TV is gonna be showing basketball all day.
Michigan not being in really stinks, but this is the greatest weekend in American sports regardless. Only reason I’m not taking the whole day off like I do every year is I just got back from parental leave two weeks ago. Definitely would’ve been bad form to turn right around and ask for that day off, but I’m going to be watching while working, regardless.
My rooting interests will be for big ten teams to lose , except maybe Purdue. I think Painter is a good coach and seems like a good dude.
Can’t stand any other big ten teams so I want them all to lose in the first round..
As for the rest of the field I will root for upsets.
Damn, it sucks Michigan isn’t getting in.
