Saturday Night Drinking/BBQ/Favorite Vacation Spot Thread

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Who is going to fire up the adult beverages and the BBQ?   What's on tap?   And what is your favorite vacation spot that you have actually been to, not just one that you want to visit?   Indeed, maybe you are reading this post from that very spot.

EDIT:  I should add, what made the vacation trip so much fun?

Cheers.

Drinking one of my last DogfishHead 90 Minute IPA from vacation a couple of week ago.

Favorite (most frequented) vacation spot: Nags Head, Outer Banks (where we were, a couple of weeks ago)

Favorite ever: South Ari Atoll, Maldives

Water so far, not sure about tonight.  Ribeye.  Monterrey Bay, CA.  This will change as I am cruising Europe for a week or 2 in Sept.

Off the MGoBBQ link from last fall.  Glenlivet 12 to start, then a nice sauvignon blanc.

Wow, vacation question.  Good one.  While I lived in Europe I traveled everywhere.  Really liked the Rhine.  Loved going to Oktoberfest.  MGoBride and I did a bike trip through Provence for anniversary XXV---that was nice.  Took my dad to his WWII air base in England and thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip.

But really, I think the best place on earth is Yellowstone/Grand Teton.  Glacier Nat'l Park is a close second.  Grand Canyon is third.

Still love Yellowstone. Better than any island or Europe. Love hearing wild wolves howl. Dornoch Scotland is pretty cool too.

Magic Hat #9.

My favorite vacation spot is still Up North in Glen Arbor and Empire. For me, the childhood nostalgia of vacationing Up North beats out any exotic, tropical or far-away destination. Cheers, everyone!

Both the Boone Docks and Arts have their place and time for sure. Maybe it's just me, but I never seem to mind about the comparable food quality just because of the location. After all, both are mostly just a place to throw a few back and get out of the sun. I'll be up in the area the last week of July though!

Tired Hands beer, if you have never heard of it/tried it, I suggest you give it a try. Local Philly beer.

Steak on the grill tonight.

Anywhere in the UP is my fav, Marquette is an awesome place to visit.

Maine Beer Company Peeper Ale, fantastic beer, small batch unpasteurized brew so tough to find. Steaks on the grill. My favorite vacation spot is the next one I'm going to, in this case it will be Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. When I was a young man it was Ios because of all the naked Northern European women.

NyQuil. Have a nasty sinus infection. Sunset Key, Key West, FLA - absolute paradise. (My in-laws live there, otherwise they'd never let me on the island.)

Mackinaw Island, try to spend the night there.  Way different place after the day trippers leave.  Also, see the locks at Sault Ste Marie and Tahquamenon Falls.

It has been a long time since I've been there, but IIR the restaurant correctly, the Bayside Restaurant was a non pricey place St Ignace and had great whitefish.  May not be the Bayside, but it was a place along the island docks.

Drinking a Switchback Ale on the deck. Smoking a Fuente, dog has a big ol' bone, wife has a book, and about to grill up some Korean BBQ pork belly (Dwaejibulgogi).

Favorite spot right now would be June Lake, CA, outside of Yosemite.

Good thread.

Haven't had a drink in 24 years. But, I loved Rhinenalnder when I was young. Probably because you could drink 5 quarts of it.  That and Grolsh.

Best vacation spot is the Georgian Bay in Ontario, hands down.  It's quiet, the fishing is incredible, the scenery is astounding, the local towns are gorgeous, but small, and the people are wonderful. We went to a place called Kenwood cottages growing up. God bless that place I have so many wonderful childhood and adult memories there.

Favorite vacation spot thus far has been Canneel Bay, St. John, USVI. Pretty pricey but the experience was great. It's right next to a national park, has seven beautiful private beaches, etc. The rooms are older and semi rustic (no TVs). Some folks call it "glamping." The big upside is the resort only has limited space and the rooms & villas aren't high rises. Some of the high end resorts in the Caribbean you end up fighting for beach chairs. Like a cruise ship on land. With Canneel what you're paying for is natural beauty and solitude.

Tropical getaway:  St. John, USVI.   Incredible scenery, great snorkeling, slow pace.   I stayed on the east end last time I visited and absolutely loved it.   Very, very quiet.

Domestic:  U.P.   Nature at its best, especially the Keweenaw and western U.P.

Drinking:  New Glarus Totally Naked.  It fits my name well.

Eucher Pilsner.  Not bad, I must say.

Favorite vacation spot: on the boat in Saugatuck.  Can do either the beaches on Lake Michigan, or drinking too much and watching the world go by anchored in the Kzoo river where it cuts through the dunes.

Boss owned a house right on the beach in Alys. Had been renting it out most of the time but had a free weekend before he sold for a very nice profit. Shut the office down for one Thursday and Friday for a long weekend retreat. Flew the entire office down to stay at his place and rented another villa. First class all the way. Beautiful community. Most of my vacation time is spent going back to MI over holidays so this was a nice change for once. Completely free to us as well. Only thing I could get in was to buy him a drink and a his breakfast one morning. Definitely looking forward to visiting the next house he builds down there.
