Sam Webb predicts the last 4 kids in the class

Submitted by MGoCooper on

This morning on recruiting roundup, someone asked Sam if today were signing day, who the last 4 kids of this class were going to be. As ALWAYS, this was just Sam's "opinion", but here are the kids that he thought would join this class.

-Yuri Wright

-Bri'onte Dunn

-Jordan Payton

-Amara Darboh

I would agree for the most part, maybe substitute Wright for Banner, because that seems the most reasonable based upon recent happenings. I guess I have trouble putting a kid in this class who has yet to visit or even schedule a visit to campus. Maybe it works out that we can get 5 more kids in this class, as always we'll see.

Just wanted to tell you that during your latest commenting stretch I find myself wanting to +1 you on most of your posts. If it counted I would actually go through and do it, too.

From what I've read of yours here (since after the Tressel situation, and I think emotions were running high for everyone) you could definitely turn into a sort of OSU version of WatersDemos/ Irish, which would be pretty cool.

Thank you. And don't say the points don't matter, even though they might not for the person recieving them, I'm loving the fact that I can give them out now. It's so much fun and gives purpose to my reading all the posts.

I really have read this site for years and I had joined once before and commented back when Carr was leaving, but forgot my login info/the site changed and had to re-sign up. I've always tried to be respectful that this is a Michigan blog and you come here for talking Michigan sports, but occasionally OSU topics are relevant and therefore occasionally an OSU poster's opinions might be. And then I try to keep that opinion rational and not attacking or spin into  ad hominem BS.

Dunn and his dad were supposedly "not impressed" with OSU's offensive showing against MSU. Can't remember where I read it, but it was on the board here.

In my personal opinion (which means nothing) I think that Dunn wants to go to OSU but at this point it looks like he should go to Michigan.

One program has a prolific offense just dying for a workhorse running back (With a Heisman calilber current QB, a 5 star backup, and a 2013 5 star committed). Has a defense on the rise. has gone from unranked to #12 in the country, beat a bitter rival on a national stage at night, has a new coach who's saying all the right things, proven NFL-prepping coaches, a recently united and excited fanbase,  etc. etc.

The other program can't move the ball at all on offense (with a current tire fire at QB (I think Miller might end up being good, but he's not there yet)). Has a good defense, has gone from ranked to out, lost a primetime game to another team with NCAA issues, just lost a conference game that had the announcers talking about how awful it was, a new coach who looks lost and thinks saving time outs is key, has former and current players speaking out about the direction of the system, an AD who looks like a joke and who might get the axe with the university president, etc. etc.

Add in that they're both historically dominant, premier programs with traditions etc. and it's pretty easy to see where he should go. But humans aren't 100% logical, we have emotions. That's why my guess is he wants to go to OSU, but hasn't been able to justify a decision either way yet.

That's all valid and seems like a very logical assessment. I don't think our QB situation is a tire fire, our offense definitely is. Braxton has a future, he's talented, but young. He's not being given the right environment to thrive because of our OC.

But yeah, clearly you guys are on the upswing right now and we're going in the opposite direction. I hope we don't fall too much lower. I think we will get a new AD, but that shouldn't change a recruit's decision too much. It might cause a new coaching hire, and we definitely need at least a new offensive staff. All of it might obviously make any, especially offensive position, recruits shy away or at least be cautious.

But I see the world with Maize and Blue tinted glasses. You could have done a near identical writeup of the two programs in 2008 - roles reveresed. I didnt even mention the whole NCAA thing in my post either, he's said that a bowl ban is what scares him the most. The above were just my $.02.

As an aside - thanks for being a rational buckeye fan on a michigan blog! I love productive discourse with fans of other teams.

I know for the last 5yrs-ish Fickell has been the closer on the recruiting front. I'm not sure he'll be our head coach next year, but if he is, we should keep a lot of our recruits around. My hope is that even if Luke loses the head coaching job that at best, he stays on staff as a DC and at worst, he cuts his teeth somewhere like a MAC school or Indiana as a HC and then returns to take back over in 10-15yrs.

Where there's smoke there's fire. It just seems like a perfect storm for us to land Dunn. All the recruiting experts seem to be leaning towards Dunn decommitting. Plus, Michigan landing Kalis and his cousin Thomas certainly doesn't hurt their case. Hell, it was Dunn who told Kalis that he Kalis, needed to visit Michigan.

If there was just some talk that he was worried about NCAA sanctions, then I'd think he was probably going to stick with OSU. He doesn't seem to say much so there's a lot of reading between the lines, but he's taking visits and seems inclined to take more. That alone makes me think there's a fair chance he will decommit.

You know he was being fed the OSU party line at home. The sanctions will be minor, the coaches that recruited him will stick around. The team is still poised to contend for the B1G title. Recent developments on those fronts haven't exactly gone OSU's way, nor was having his cousin commit to UM.

Even if the only reason Dunn was initially looking around was his fear of specific, harsh NCAA penalties, he's found plenty of other reasons to reconsider. Those penalties aren't exactly off the table either. I think he's seen enough to know that he would be comfortable at UM and that's going to look better than all the uncertainty in Columbus.

We are at 22, right (not counting gray shirts or preferred walkons).  So we can add 3 more to this class.  IIRC, at least 2-3 are going to enroll early, so that gets us up to SIX more.  Capped at 28.  Or, isn't there room for 28, do current scholies limit us to merely four?

Those 4 Sam mentioned, plus both OL (Banner/Garnett), would be monster, to get to 28.

Although I always have to mention in these recruiting discussions -- I do feel somewhat evil discussing the college choces of a bunch of 17-18 year olds.

If you didn't catch yesterdays's Recruiting Roundup on WTKA, you should definitely listen to a clip of the last caller:

http://wtka.podhoster.com/index.php?sid=3088&pid=26342   (go to to the 17:10 mark)

Basically caller asks Sam if Aaron Burbridge would be likely to switch his commitment from MSU to UM if he gets his grades in order.   What was notable is the long silent pause while Sam considered the question.   Ira actually says, "Cat got your tongue?"

Maybe it means nothing, but having listened to Sam for a long time, I have my own gut feeling that he might know something here that for one reason or the other he's not willing or ready to share.   Without going out on too long a limb here, I'd speculate that if grades were not an issue at all, there is a good chance we'd have a commitment from Burbridge and there would only be one WR spot in play.  Problem is, if and when that happens, we may not have any spots left.  And so it goes.

On a related note, Sam's colleague Allen Trieu posted a clip of Burbridge making an unbelievable catch in a recent Harrison's game:  View Clip  (not paywalled)

Interesting... I would be very happy ending the class out with those four. Payton and Darboh would fill our WR need and Dunn would be a great back to have in our backfield. Getting Wright would be an extreme bonus as well, IMO.

Wow. That would be amazing. I want to make sure we get those 2 receivers (a need IMO), and I would love to get wright, but if he doesn't choose us I would like to get garnett or banner.

Balas on Rivals has a three-person defensive recruiting Hot Board that includes Wright, Adolphus Washington, and Elijah Shumate (Wright's teammate). I think Washington is going to be an absolute animal in college (largely because of his Cutty beard), but it sounds like he's off the board for us pretty much. I would love to get Shumate though. Greedy? Yes.
