Sabb going to Alabama
As mentioned in the podcast, this one kind of hurts. Maybe more NIL money? Thanks Keon for everything you did for the Maize and Blue, especially down the stretch

Come on down, Zeke Berry.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:42 AM ^
SQ, I know you believed he was leaving to start somewhere. Alabama seems like a curious landing spot if that is the case. If he is good enough to start at Bama, then one would think he would be good enough to start at UM. Is this still your best guess?
February 20th, 2024 at 7:47 AM ^
He'll probably slot in to replace the 5-star safety who transferred to OSU.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:47 AM ^
Not necessarily. Bama lost Caleb Downs to OSU, so they had a spot to fill.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:52 AM ^
So, we can blame OSU for this. Put it on the bulletin board. (Semi-serious ...)
If you're in the mood for some dark humor, watch the field storming right after the 4th-down stop against Alabama. A few players got close to the Alabama sideline and expressed themselves. Sabb was leading the charge. :)
To leave this on a very positive note, Alabama was very interested in a guy who was -- technically -- a back-up at Michigan.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:49 AM ^
It makes sense. Caleb Downs left (safety spot opened up), Sabb has a pre-existing relationship with Courtney Morgan (Bama recruiter who used to be with Michigan and Washington), and DB Domani Jackson, who we lost twice 🤬). I wish him well, and he should shine because it was a good move for him.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:58 AM ^
He'll get a lot more playing time at Bama. He's 'behind' Moore and Paige here.
February 20th, 2024 at 10:45 AM ^
Yeah, I mean, It's quite a turn of events for a Michigan player who is considered a non starter to transfer to Bama for playing time. Does that say a lot about Michigan or more about Bama? Not sure.
Also, Courtney Morgan is at Bama and I'm sure he received some NIL jack to coerce him so there are other less significant factors.
February 20th, 2024 at 10:52 AM ^
If this were “Saban Alabama” it would shock me. But Alabama is gonna come Back down to Earth.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:43 PM ^
We're you not aware that the Downs kid (somehow that doesn't sound quite right 🤔) who almost intercepted JJ's 1st pass in the Rose Bowl has transferred to osu?
They have an opening...
EDIT: If you weren't you certainly are now!
February 19th, 2024 at 9:51 PM ^
Probably a combination of money and playing time.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:26 PM ^
Maybe he was really impressed w what deshawn hand has done w his engineering degree?
February 19th, 2024 at 10:42 PM ^
Won't need a degree with Bama's bag$, erh, NIL deal.
February 19th, 2024 at 9:51 PM ^
If you beat them, join them.
February 19th, 2024 at 9:53 PM ^
Next man up.
I know that sounds harsh but that's just the reality of College Football nowadays. Program develops you, builds up your NFL resume, trusts you and gives you significant playing time en route to a National Championship, and it still isn't enough. In fairness, losing the defensive staff probably contributed to his decision but to not even give Coach Moore and his new staff a chance to prove themselves in Spring practice is disappointing.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:01 PM ^
Alabama lost a better safety who was a starter.
February 20th, 2024 at 4:06 AM ^
At least Keon didn't join Caleb Downs (and Joey Velazquez) at Ohio State.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:15 PM ^
He likely wants to go the league this year and wasn’t going to get enough snaps given our depth.
February 20th, 2024 at 4:07 AM ^
May he use up all three years of his eligibility at Bama.
February 20th, 2024 at 8:47 AM ^
Trente Jones has entered the chat.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:27 PM ^
I mean...Alabama's got a direct line to more playing time and this is likely a one-year rental anyway, so it makes total sense. Yes, Michigan "gave" him playing time but he also performed well in those spots and gave UM above-average safety play from what one usually expects from their 3rd/4th safety. And when UM inevitably plucks a player from some other team's roster because he wants more playing time, more money, etc. I doubt anyone will get that bent out of shape.
I'm sure Sabb talked to Moore and co. but he's able to look at a depth chart and figures his draft stock won't be any lower if he's a starter at Alabama than if he's a heavy backup/sorta-starter at UM. It sucks to lose him but I totally get it and don't begrudge him for it.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:29 PM ^
It sure seems like NCAA football is a very transactional experience these days.
February 19th, 2024 at 11:21 PM ^
Team 144 had the transformational experience, though.
February 20th, 2024 at 1:15 AM ^
This is how it will be until the new league is formed but even then the adjustments will be minimal. I think you'll see more controls on player movement and the playing field ($$$) will be more equitable (cap/revenue sharing).
It's a major adjustment but sorely needed. With TV and universities making billions off these kids backs it's finally about to change. Too bad its about a hundred billion and 30 years too late.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:29 AM ^
With universities using billions off these kids backs to fund non-revenue sports, it's finally about to change... by universities getting rid of lots of non-revenue sports.
February 20th, 2024 at 10:35 AM ^
I'm not so sure the revenue used to pay the players will come from the universities, it should come directly from the multi billion dollar tv deals.
Also, I wonder if the responsibility for funding non rev sports falls on the shoulders of the athletes responsible for generating all the revenue? I get where you're coming from but the revenue generated by football players/teams and passed on to non rev entities is really a luxury not a responsibility.
February 20th, 2024 at 11:02 AM ^
I’ve thought about this. What’s good for athletes in the big money sports might lead to the death of other sports that don’t generate much revenue.
February 20th, 2024 at 2:53 PM ^
Meh, these sports never generated revenue. Lacrosse was a club sport when i was a student and now it's grown into a varsity sport. If it's a good sport that kids want to play, they'll have it. Maybe they wont get the luxuries they're used to, but yeah it was messed up that for decades golfers and squash players were getting luxury facilities with the money earned off the physical punishment football players receive on a daily basis.
Nobody ever wondered if we should take all the money the b-school students make and use it to fund luxuries for the art school. That's insane on it's face, and using the money earned by football players to fund luxurious for other sports is equally insane.
February 20th, 2024 at 12:05 AM ^
And there are Indiana, Nebraska, Arizona State, Northwestern, Coastal Carolina, etc etc fans who feel the same way about the guys Michigan brings in.
The game is the game.
February 19th, 2024 at 9:53 PM ^
Seems pretty quick to already have picked a team and at least according to one tweet already be enrolled at a different school.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:10 PM ^
I heard the cheeseburgers in Tuscaloosa are delicious.
February 20th, 2024 at 4:50 AM ^
Yeah and the move was allegedly announced by the Bama NIL collective… so we have a kid entering the portal and within ~85 hours he’s already enrolled in a new school and that school’s NIL collective breaks the news… totally not an eyebrow raiser.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:07 AM ^
The majority of the portals are usually done before they announce the transfer portal especially if you're a P5 starting caliber player.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:50 PM ^
Courtney Morgan is your connection there.
Suddenly I'm wondering if the reason Morgan left when he did was because Michigan would allow themselves to be pilloried over cheeseburgers while other schools just did what needs to be done in the NIL/Portal era? 🤔
February 19th, 2024 at 9:54 PM ^
Maybe Sabb was leaving regardless, but OSU grabbing Downs was quite the move for them.
February 19th, 2024 at 9:56 PM ^
Helped win the Natty C. He’s the man. Good luck to him.
February 19th, 2024 at 9:57 PM ^
Stud of a player and he will be missed but Berry is next man up and he will shine. We’re currently at the point that we reload, not rebuild. Have faith people, we’ll be fine.
February 20th, 2024 at 9:29 AM ^
I hope you’re right. I know this is what Alabama/Georgia/OSU have done for the last 15 years.
if by reload you mean “we are contenders for the National Championship in 24”. I am really hard pressed to see the number of questions about Michigans roster and coaching staff answered positively enough to win like we did last year.
How do we score enough points against good defenses?
FWIW, basically saying what all the mgoblog guys except Seth said on their podcast yesterday.

Familiarity breeds contempt.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:01 PM ^
Good luck to Sabb. Bad luck for Bama.
Let's move on and Go Blue.
February 20th, 2024 at 12:53 AM ^
Champagne for my real friends. Real pain for my sham friends.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:02 PM ^
Really came on and is a starter level (and ascending) that may not have left if Moore did not return. Frustrating.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:14 PM ^
I'd rather have Moore back and lose Sabb though.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:24 PM ^
Moore for smarts/savvy but Sabb had more blossoming physical talent.
February 20th, 2024 at 3:29 PM ^
Moore is no slouch athletically and he's a 3-year starter. Dude was making plays against OSU as a true freshman. No doubt keeping Moore is a much bigger win than if he left for the NFL and Sabb stays.
Also, who's to say Sabb still doesn't leave even if Moore or Paige declared? Regardless, sucks to lose Sabb but this is what happens when you recruit well and develop that talent, you're gonna lose some guys that are starter-level talent but are behind more talented guys.
February 20th, 2024 at 3:59 PM ^
It's okay. He and Alabama will get all the educational experiences they need playing Georgia and especially Ohio State.
February 19th, 2024 at 10:03 PM ^
Michigan - "A degree from Michigan will look great on your resume"
Bama - "How does 5 million sound?"
February 19th, 2024 at 11:14 PM ^
If they had crazy NIL money to throw around, they wouldn't have lost Downs to OSU. It's probably mostly to do with playing time / starting. I'm sure he got bigger offers from the Oregon / Ole Miss / Miami types.
February 20th, 2024 at 7:08 AM ^
To aspiring NFL players, degrees matter very little to them. Just a path to get them PT which gives the scouts plenty of tape to improve their stock.
