Ryan, Wile earn B1G weekly awards

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Jake Ryan was named B1G Defensive Player of the Week. The last Michigan player to win DPoW was also Jake Ryan after Michigan's 45-0 shutout of Illinois in 2012.

Michigan has only had four B1G DPoWs in the last 6 years.

Matt Wile was named B1G Special Teams Player of the Week. The last Wolverine to do that was in November 2013 after Michigan's miracle fire drill FG at Northwestern.

Interesting numbers. Thanks.

To me, they don't tell the whole story. In this game, he seemed to be much more attacking and agrressive, which served him well.  In the Utah game, he seemed to wait a little more and absorb the ballcarrier. This game, he was flying all around.

Dunno if this is accurate or not, just how it seemed to me.

Good stats WD, however just because he has more tackles this year doesn't mean he has a larger impact.  In nearly all situations, a MIKE linebacker will have more tackles than an edge linebacker as Jake was last year.  This is because the offense can make an effort to run away from you, where as being in the middle a larger percentage of the plays will come in your direction.  Same reason Kendrick Lewis(?) has more tackles than JJ Watt.  I don't think you were trying to say he's better this season than last, but just thought the tackle stat could be misleading.

Happy for Wile. Hagerup had a really good game too. The difference between the punting int eh PSU game vs the Minnesota game was marked.  Defense and special teams basically won the game for us.

Looked like the whole team came ready to play against Penn State.  Now if they can take the intensity up even higher, we'll have a competitive game against MSU.

The offense came to play. Outside of the one bonehead throw by Gardner that led to the INT and the drives where either Bellomy was in, we moved the ball OK against a good defense. If Gardner plays that whole game healthy we win by double digits.

Sorry man, I'm going to disagree.  We had one touch down on a bad pass that should've been picked if the safety doesn't stand back and wait for it.  Not once in the entire game did we have a play where Nuss set the players up to take advantage of what the defense gave.  No creativity, no flair, nothing.  This offense is the worst in the modern history of Michigan football circal 1969 and needed an NFL level effort from Matt Wile to overcome a bad team.

But I've been reading and hearing that bullshit about Funchess' TD not being legitimate because it was a poor throw, or it was a lucky catch, all weekend.  Okay then, this is an abbreviated list:

1978, Michigan did not beat ND because....Joe Montana.

1991, Notre Dame actually won this game because the Desmond Howard catch in the back of the endzone was miraculous thus not legitimate.

1994, Michigan really did beat Colorado because the Kordell Stewart-Michael Westbrook hook up was beyond impossible, thus it never happened.

1997 Michigan lost to MSU because Sir Charles never jumped 10 feet in the air to make that interception and MSU found new confidence to win.

2011 No way Michigan scored 28 legitimate points in the 4th Q against ND to win.

This game was won, in large part, because of field position (and Penn State's horrendous offense and a very good defensive performance from Michigan, I digress).  Hagerup looked excellent this week.

My wife flew in from Portland to meet up for an informal 20-year reunion, but with all of the grief around the program lately, she was a little worried about the game. She's definitely not the football fan I am, but she got her alumni tickets, and they put her in row A in the corner of the endzone. She was with the students, all about 20 years younger, and she had a blast.

Anyhow, at the end, Jake Ryan (who she immediately loved because of Sixteen Candles) came up to the section, high-fived my wife, smiled and said, "Thank you for supporting us." She didn't even know who he was, but she was just blown away. Just another reason to be impressed with him and the rest of the team.

Fucking A. I'm done bitching about UM football after I heard that. No matter what. All in for the rest of the season, and we'll see where we land in January...
