I suppose so. I guess that means he got some encouraging word about the draft. Good for him but Persi could have used another year to become the major force he probably will be.

Ugh, the dreaded double post (this one courtesy of my toddler hitting my phone right as I tapped Save).
November 21st, 2022 at 9:11 PM ^
The old "toddler ate my homework" excuse. Nicely played.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:15 AM ^
But my toddler kept those drifters chained in the basement for years, ate them and then buried their remains in the back yard…
November 21st, 2022 at 8:32 PM ^
Also he'll be 23 in February and the average NFL career doesn't last THAT long. Getting a sixth year out of him would have been a nice bonus, but probably not in his best interest.
November 21st, 2022 at 8:49 PM ^
Persi is in his third year. Putting the COVID eligibility confusion aside for a moment, that would make him a RS sophomore. Becoming a starter as a RS junior doesn't seem premature at all. We can probably expect improvement next year and the following year (unless he blows up and leaves early), but he's probably not too far from his ceiling at this point.
November 21st, 2022 at 8:54 PM ^
Yeah, in an ideal system you basically have all but the absolutely elite OL starting in their fourth and fifth years, so this is working as intended.
November 22nd, 2022 at 6:02 AM ^
Few guys would be willing to sign up for a 4-5 year wait to get their turn.
November 21st, 2022 at 8:50 PM ^
Persi will be in his 4th year with the program next year, how much more seasoning did you think he needed?
November 21st, 2022 at 9:52 PM ^
The covid year was not really equivalent to a regular full year.
November 21st, 2022 at 10:46 PM ^
Do we think Persei is more likely than Barnhart/Jones bookends?
November 22nd, 2022 at 6:18 AM ^
Barnhart at Right Guard
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:19 AM ^
Hasn’t Barnhart struggled at guard over the years?
November 21st, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
Hayes is ready.
November 21st, 2022 at 9:16 PM ^
There will be some turnover on the line but I think we will still have a strong group next season. I’m going to guess that Keegan goes and Zinter stays, which is just a guess.
LT: Persi/Barnhart
LG: El Hadi/Atteberry
C: Crippen/Anderson
RG: Zinter/Atteberry
RT: Jones/Barnhart
November 21st, 2022 at 9:25 PM ^
No way Zinter stays. I would swap Anderson for Crippen and Barnhart for Zinter on your depth chart.
November 21st, 2022 at 9:32 PM ^
Zinter has 2 more years of eligibility. There is definitely a change, even a good chance he returns. He's basically a RS Sophomore right now.
I expect Zinter and Keegan to both return for another year.
Crippen will start at C. Jones at RT. Barnhart and Persi will battle at LT unless we find a transfer via the Olu Oluwatimi route (which would be my hope because I'd like to see Persi move into the starting role in '24, one more year of improvement ala Crippen this season).
Anyway, no way can you bank on Zinter leaving. He'll have a decision but he's not a lock either way.
Hayes was always gone, as is Olu.
November 21st, 2022 at 9:34 PM ^
Not sure why this comment was down voted. I don't think your suggestion is out of place.
Isn't Zinter expected to be drafted? Feels more like a reaction to not liking the take versus the take being accurate.
November 21st, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
I agree...it's not farfetched. He'd get drafted, but he could return and work his way into that late late first round/2nd round range.
NIL could play a role as well. I was just saying it's not a lock either way and that if you asked me...I'd have him back for his senior year. But I don't see him saying for both of the years he has left.
November 21st, 2022 at 11:44 PM ^
Guards drafted in the 1st/2nd rounds are DOMINANT at the college level.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:31 AM ^
It is probably less the Zinter comment and more the Anderson > Crippen. Crippen has received a ton of hype and not sure I have heard any for Anderson yet.
In regards to Keegan vs Zinter leaving early, anything is possible. Zinter grades out better and has more upside. Keegan is older but has missed a decent amount of time the last two years with little injuries. I find it best to assume both will leave and if either (or both!) come back it will be an awesome surprise.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:23 AM ^
I would be shocked if Zinter came back. Every year it seems like most of the group who are even plausibly draftable go right away to the draft. Sure, not every one of them. The argument for Zinter to stay is weaker than a lot of players who still left the last couple years.
November 21st, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
You are missing Keegan. He's supposed to have offseason surgery and return for his final year.
LT: Persi / Barnhart
LG: Keegan
El-Hadi
C: Crippen
Anderson
RG: Zinter
Atteberry
RT: Jones / Barnhart
November 21st, 2022 at 9:35 PM ^
Sweet. I figured he would go pro. Even better.
November 21st, 2022 at 9:40 PM ^
Wouldn't be surprised if that was the plan...and of course things can change.
But apparently he's been hurt since week 2 or 3 (which makes sense because he was out early when El-Hadi was getting time). Sounds like he needs surgery and he'll rehab, play his final year and then go pro.

WATCHLIST:
Guys who have a decision to make (whether that be NFL or transfer portal).
*This is not a projection for anyone except McNamara, Corum, Bell, Smith, and Morris - those are the only "locks", IMO. Schoonmaker and Upshaw would be next (Turner would have been but he's struggled at times), but you never know. Everyone else will just be someone I keep an eye on. Due to COVID, there are a few free 5th and 6th years*

I’m predicting Andrew Gentry will be starting at one of the tackle spots next year,
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:02 AM ^
Not denying this...it's a prediction. But what are you basing your prediction on?
That would be a pretty big jump to replace 2 "starters" and another guy who started at Rutgers when Hayes was out for a game.
He also hasn't play LT all year, and Jones doesn't play LT either. So presumably he'd be starting over Barnhart and Jones at RT.

Where does the Mormon missionary guy fit in? I thought he was an OLman? What was his name? Gentry?
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:02 AM ^
I have him #2 at RT.
November 22nd, 2022 at 1:32 AM ^
It is nice to see the OL stocked with young talent that will step in and play after seniors leave for the NFL.
November 22nd, 2022 at 4:16 AM ^
He’s earned it. He had some ups and downs last year (Penn St pass pro comes to mind), but he’s been solid as a rock when he’s been in this year.
I wouldn’t be surprised by Zinter’s decision either way. He’s on the NFL’s radar for sure.
As long as Moore is still here coaching them I’m confident that the O-line, even with a likely step backwards, will still be one of the best in the B1G next year.
