Roy Manning for RB coach?

Submitted by dnak438 on

Over on Touch the Banner, Magnus suggested that Tyrone Wheatley was unlikely to come to Michigan now that Trevno is in the fold and suggested Roy Manning as another possibility (LINK).

Looking at Manning's bio over on MGoBlue (LINK), I saw that he coached running backs before he got to Michigan, at Cincinnati (2012) and for two months at Northern Illinois (2013) before he was hired by Michigan. It's often the case that great recruiters are given the responsibility for running backs, and we know that Manning is a top recruiter.

If there's no room for Manning on the defensive side of the ball (something discussed by Brian and Ace in the last podcast) and Tyrone Wheatley would rather stay in the NFL or take a job as an OC, I'd think that Manning at RB coach (if he's willing to do it) would be a great way to keep recruiting acumen in the fold and maintain continuity among the coaches.

[EDIT: corrected the info about Manning's tenure at NIU thanks to comments by Mr Miggle]

If Harbaugh finds a role for him, then so be it. I hope we can keep him on since he looks like a good, young up and comer who can recruit, but I trust Harbaugh to make the best decision for his staff.

I trust Harbaugh completely to do what needs to be done. Anyone that questions/second guesses/complains at this point needs to STFU. Not directed to OP since he wasn't doing any of those three.

So the only knock against Manning is that he was given an impossible task for one year and did predictably badly at it? Not only had he never coached CBs before but he was asked to switch systems without the personnel to do it. His work at LB coach seemed good, and he has always been labelled a great recruiter - his RB coaching record is limited but apparently good. So if Harbaugh takes a look at him and says he's worth keeping around, I think we ought to be okay with that.

Well, Sam Webb talks to Wheatley on a regular basis and he sounded awfully optimistic yesterday about him coming to coach the RB's. Going so far as to say "he wouldn't bet against it". On top of that, I read that Harbaugh told Roseboro that Manning was staying on. That leads me to believe he will be coaching CB's or LB's.

My 2 cents: I'd like Manning as the RB coach. He's a smart, young coach who needs to be kept on the staff and I think he can handle the RBs no problem.

As unlikely as it might be as this staff might end up being mostly coaches with whom Harbaugh has some prior dealings, Manning is one of the gyus that I would like to keep if there is a role for him. He does know the RBs and is an incredible recruiter - if they can find a place for him, I think he has a tremendous upside.
