Report: Chuck Pagano Offered Position On Michigan Staff

DIEHARDSPORT JANUARY 3, 2016

While nothing is official yet, it’s sounding very likely that the Indianapolis Colts will be firing head coach Chuck Pagano following an 8-8 season..

According to Rivals’ Michael Spath, Jim Harbaugh has offered Pagano a ‘defensive consultant’ position on the staff, and if Pagano decides against another NFL job, he might take Harbaugh up on the offer.

Carlo Kemp, an early enrollee for the Wolverines, is the nephew of Pagano. Likewise, Pagano is close with Greg Mattison, Michigan’s defensive line coach.

Screw you pay me in full.  Who do they think they are going to get?  No coach in their right mind would go there,  I guess Jim Tomsula would be a great fit.

LOL. It would be so ironic that people thought Michigan's head coach would leave for Indianapolis and in reality Indianapolis' head coach leaves for Michigan.

I follow NFL pretty closely and don't recall seeing any concerns about his health since the leukemia treatment was considered successful., I believe he's been in remission for years. His particular leukemia also had a pretty high cure rate with a new drug cocktail. I'd love to see him at UM, but I suspect he lands somewhere in the NFL as a coordinator.

How does Don Brown handle having an NFL guy hanging around consulting? If this happens it'll make me wonder if Brown is as awesome as he's hyped up to be around here.

Here's the thing about really competent, confident people; they are not threatened by having other really competent people around. Most great leaders know that the more talent at their disposal, the better they will do. I would hope that Brown, like Harbaugh, would recognize that having a guy like Pagano on staff can ONLY be a good thing. Why would he be against it?

A's hire A's, and B's hire C's.  If Brown is the right guy for the job, he won't have any reason to be threatened by having another defensive mind on the staff, and if Pagano is the right guy for the (consultant) job, he won't attempt to cause any problems.

If Jim Harbaugh thought he could get Dick LeBeau* as DC and Bill Belichick as OC, and then could hire Bill Cowher, Sean Payton, BIll Parcells, and John Madden as coordinators, he'd do it, and then he'd hire Bill Walsh and Vince Lombardi as "special coordinators from beyond the grave." :-)  The more great football minds around the team, the better they'll perform, provided that there is a consistent vision coming from the top.

I don't have a strong opinion on Pagano's suitability as a defensive consultant, but I'm happy to defer to Harbaugh's judgement. :-)

* Feel free to insert your own list of coaches respected for their football acumen in one way or another. :-)

He might have asked Brown.  But really, from all we've heard about Don Brown, you'd think he would love a chance to have another bright mind around him to challenge him and push the team to get better.  If he was offended by this I don't think he'll last long around Harbaugh.  The team.  The team.  The team.

Chuck Pagano is going to land somewhere in the NFL. It is one of those no down side situation if he is around and can help. It keeps him busy and active using his football brain in a real practical way. Michigan gets another set of expert eyes to help evaluate personnel and how to best coach up the team - remember even with one year under their belts a lot of the team still has yet to hit their full potential. Finally it really helps with the general impression for recruits that this is the place to come if you seriously consider a future in the NFL -  the NFL connections are active and constantly being refreshed.

Our competitors don't stand a chance.  This year was a mere warm up.  In short time, every program in the country will be eating our dust.  Harbaugh is relentless, a genius, connected, and a winner.  I may hold a candle light vigil until next year's opener.  I can't f'ing wait.

This would be awesome. Michigan needs to develop a team of coaching like Alabama has. Guys who can break down film and develop plays to attack the opponent. Pagano would add so much to the team.

it seems that Pagano refused a contract extension last September, thinking that this would be his last year.   So he is not owed money by Indy.

It maybe a case of burnout, as he had said that the Colt's job would be his last.

The UM job would let him stay in football without the stress that comes with a head coaching position.

Seems like Harbaugh is forming an elite club of former pro coaches that show how just how fickle NFL owners really are.

It looks like Harbaugh invented a position for Pagano. It looks like the athletic department just got even more bloated. It's probably a position where Pagano gets to live wherever he wants, doesn't have to move to Ann Arbor, but get sent game film for him to analyze. It doesn't seem like a job where he will have hands-on contact with the players

I cannot imagine any other head coach in college having the balls to offer a current NFL head coach a consulting position at the college level and actually do it believing it might be accepted.

Harbaugh though, I love this man!

...Teryl Austin takes one of the available head coaching jobs.  I have this sneaky feeling Caldwell is coming back, which means Jim Bob will be back as well.  The only major departure would likely be the DC.

OTOH, I wonder if he could take on this new position with us and replace Mattison as DL coach when he decides to retire.  He could be tired of the NFL, especially when an owner gets rid of you for finishing .500 without your All-Pro QB and you're stuck with an 85 year old Frank Gore at RB.  I think the Lions play Indy next year, so I'd be glad if he's gone.  The man can coach.

I highly doubt this is true. Usually, bringing in a "consultant" to "assist" a coordinator is the writing on the wall for that coordinator. Since Don Brown has yet to coach a single game and his hiring was seen as a massive coup, I doubt that Harbaugh would want to add a high profile coach to the defensive staff who could rival Brown in authority (unless he cleared it with Brown first, which I also doubt).

The only way this would be true is if this really is a consulting role that doesn't involve much actual interaction with the team. Harbaugh might have meant this as a favor to Pagano to give him something to put on his resume until his next real gig if he's let go by the Colts.
