Report: 'Multiple teams' called Patriots about Ryan Mallett trade
According to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, "multiple teams" have dialed up the Patriots and inquired about acquiring Mallett, who was a third-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Bedard's sources tell him that "the odds are slightly stronger that Mallett is dealt than kept" by the Patriots once all is said and done.
However, compensation, as usual, is the issue. The Pats invested a third-round pick in Mallett in 2011, at a time when they clearly didn't need a quarterback. They've spent the past two years teaching him the ins and outs of becoming the next Tom Brady (and not the next Matt Cassel to anyone who's interested in trading, thank you very much) and want to be justly compensated. Who can blame them?
Bedard believes that a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft or a 2014 first-round pick would probably get the job done. That brings into question whether or not the Browns, run by unabashed Mallett fan and Belichick buddy Mike Lombardi, are in play then, because they have no second-round pick this year.

Considering the majority of the players on the team despised him, team chemistry would have been a major issue. So, yeah. It was probably best that he left, despite the 3 years of hell that followed.

I wouldn't every bother with this exercise. Does Hoke get Mattison in 08? Does he get Borges, or does Parrish decide to come with him to UM instead of staying at Ball State? Would we have gotten the renovations that were started when Rodriguez walked in and balked at the state of our facilities (remember he basically got the weight room overhauled all by himself)? Would Hoke even have been as good, or did he need the extra two years in SDSU to refine his craft? There was still a ton of issues with that team down the pipeline; lots of seeming additude issues. Would it have been the disaster of 2008? No probably not, but what happened, happened, and we cleaned a lot of bad weight off the program in the ensuing painful process. Now the ceiling seems so high for the program; even higher than the end of the Carr years. Let's just run with that.
It's always been my opinion that we would've actually been more medicore because so much of Hoke's bravado is "THIS IS MICHIGAN"...he doesn't get that without Rich Rod.
IMO, and again, it's just my opinion. We would've been 7-5ish unless Mallett and the boys struck it BCS big before they left. If they didn't, I don't think Hoke would've made it to year 5. Michigan fans would've grown impatient and Les Miles would be the godsend to save us. And those that know me know I can't stand Les Miles. I wanted Jim Harbaugh in '08 and wanted him in '11 (oops! Hoke was my 2nd choice though)
That's just how I always thought it would go if Hoke would've been hired in '08.
In the end, and last time, MY opinion. I didn't really mind the Rich Rod era except for the first year when he forced his system on the personnel rather than doing what Hoke/Borges did with Denard. The whole Tony Gibson debacle. And I HATED the stories about him blaming losses on Gibbons in front of the entire team. That bothered me more than anything. That is the reason I will never look past that era.

Not one of those '08 losses was truly equivalent to the comprehensive annihilation that the Oregon home game was.
Losing to Utah was a disappointment at the time; but we know where that team eventually went nationally. Losing narrowly to Toledo at home was bad, but nothing like the Oregon embarassment. Losing to a good Ohio State team, in Columbus, can't really be compared. That was the Shafer meltdown game. I was there, in Columbus. And as bad as that game was, Oregon '07 was a bigger clusterfuck in my mind.
Are you a fan of Michigan, or just of Rich Rodriguez? Sometimes I honestly can't tell.

As for my support of Michigan football, the Victors Club tells me that I'm somewhere in the Top 5%. So I'm at least that much of a fan.
The only thing I despise about Michigan football are the dumb Michigan football fans. The smart ones I like very much.
As usual, it is the Rodriguez-haters who go out of their way to bait me on this Board. It is pathological. I never mentioned Rodriguez. I certainly never wrote a bad word about Brady Hoke. Some of you boys have some issues. You might want to take a time-out.

Your hatred of Rich Rodriguez is on par with mine of the current Tiger's coach, so I get that it's possible to make empassioned, illogical, poorly thought out comments at times, because I do, but this is the stupidest comment I've seen.
This is more on the AD. The same people that think it's a cost-save to retrieve foul balls from kids in stands at UM beisbol games, thought it was a good idea to not put money into the facilities or staff.
They're still taking foul balls from kids, but at least they've upgraded the pay and facilities.

I just hate people who makes excuses for him failing at his job.
Sure, in a perfect world Michigan would use all the money to be first rate. Brandon agrees, thankfully. But as an excuse for Rich it's asinine because it's not like they cut the funding for him or his staff when he took over. They were actually higher paid than the guys who came before them, and managed to win a whole lot for 40 years under that pay scale. Lloyd would actually take his bonus money and give them to assistants because the department was so cheap. Rich could have taken less money or money from elsewhere and put it towards a DC. He didn't. That was one of his many mistakes. It would have been nice for Martin to not be a cheap ass, but somehow we managed to win with him being a cheap ass before Rich got here. So the problem wasn't money. (Though it certainly can be a help).
Except maybe the weight room thing. Because when Hoke took over they pretty much got rid of a lot of that stuff and brought in new stuff. It was more done for style of the S&C coach than because the stuff we had was that outdated. I mean, it's always nice to get new stuff, but we've done it twice now in 3 years.
But yeah, even Brady says he wasn't as good a coach as he as after his time at SDSU.

I love Denard, but if it meant continuing bowl streak, no flip flop of streaks against MSU, and everything else that went in the crapper those three years, I'd trade the team success for Denard. What made Denard special is the little hope he brought in dark times. But I'd rather not have dark times to begin with. But there's no guarantee that they wouldn't have been medium-dark anyway, so what happened happened and it's off to the future.

That Hoke would have tolerated about 2 min of Mallett's bullshit, made him wear a Hello Kitty sticker-ridden-hemlet on the bench; and that Mallett would have immediately transferred to ArKANSAS like he always wanted to anyway.

FWIW according to multiple Cleveland based media outlets the Browns have zero interest In Ryan Mallet. They know that the Pats want a 2nd rounder this year (which we dont have) or a 1st rounder next year (which he's not worth) so that deal aint happening.

Even if he's only half a Michigan legacy, we can still say we have two former QBs in the league until Gardner takes that step. Remember when we had like five or six at once a few years back? That was neat.
Um, Chad Henne? He's still in the League, as far as I know. And Denard will make a roster, even if he's not playing QB. So next season there should be 4 former Michigan QBs in the NFL.
This comment prompted me to look, and every Michigan starting quarterback from Elvis Grbac through Chad Henne/Ryan Mallett at least made an NFL roster. That's 1989-2007, and three head coaches (Bo, Mo, and Lloyd). It's a pretty remarkable streak, one that I don't think any other school even comes close to replicating.

If you followed Michigan for a long time, you know how absurd the notion that Michigan would ever be Quarterback U was. That was for Miami or BYU or UCLA. Michigan?
On Monday Night Football one night in the '80's, a comment was made by one of the announcers to the effect of "There have been over 10,000 Touchdown passes throwrn in the NFL, and not one of them has been thrown by a Michigan Quaterback".
How far we've come. Seems like Brady alone has probably thrown 10,000.
I dont hate Mallet, he simply was a case of A. probably shouldnt have come here to begin with, but my parents are making me (the whole QB U thing) and B. an immature HS kid who hit the big time. I dare say most of us would (did) the same things except we werent a starter on a D1 football team. Going to the Pat's is the best thing this kid has ever done and hopefully he can move on if he chooses and become a good NFL QB.

You're getting football and basketball mixed up. Football has never wanted for much at this school. The stadium renovations weren't finished in 2008, but that's not to say that the stadium sucked.
