In reality who could Michigan get to be a better HC?

Submitted by WeimyWoodson on December 29th, 2018 at 3:47 PM

I'm now onboard with the idea that Harbaugh is not the guy to get it done here, but who really could?  I feel like "eh this is kinda Michigan football, its not going to get better".  But really Michigan needs a coach who can come in here and revamp the offense.  No more of these FB dives, hand off to the running back to run up the gut for a year, slow tempo, delay of game when down like 30....

Not that Michigan would part ways but would would be a realistic coach to fix this mess because Saban and Dabo are not coming.

Yeah never question the coaches. Did you see what our 3 stars Stueber and Runayn and McKeon and Gil and Metellus and Furbush and Dwumfour and Kemp did out there today. Trust the coaches recruiting rankings don't matter.

If you read carefully, I never suggested they actually do this.  The guy kept asking for names and they’re successful or rising coaches. The point is it’s possible. But with the logic you’re applying, there’d be the same group of coaches circling between every job with no new faces.  After all, they have the credentials right?

What an ultimate plot twist that would be. Urban pissed off at OSU so he comes to Michigan and turns the tables. Would any UM fan care if he wins games? I certainly wouldn't. Wasn't it said to be in his contract at Utah that the 3 schools he could leave to go to without buyout (or significantly less) were OSU, ND, and UM?

Spare me the bullshit. Recruiting rankings DO matter.

Are they the end all, be all? No. Sometimes a player or two sneak last the rankings. But recruiting a team full of three stars, even if you coach them up to the best of their abilities, will not win you a national title.

Case in point: 2015 Cotton Bowl. Alabama vs. MSU. That’s the best team Dantonio will ever have at MSU, you had a team full of 2-3 star players that Dantonio coached up incredibly well.  And they still couldn’t have carried Alabama’s sweaty jockstrap.

The real questions is "Why do you want to keep Harbaugh?".

Has he won 10 games multiple times?  Yes.  Has he had any real win of consequence.  I mean a stake in the ground win?  No.

If this was any other relationship...boss, co-worker, boyfriend / girlfriend...would you expect anything different from them in year 5 that they weren't in the first 4 years?  No!

It's time to let go of one of the highest paid coaches in the country and give it to a hungry proven coordinator or coach.  What is the real value of winning 10 games when you lose the games you need to have a special season?

Lots of names have been listed.  Some are decent.

I would find a coach with offensive minded philosophy... perhaps off of the Mike Leach coaching tree.

No, not a coach already on top like Saban or Urban, they are not coming.

Someone that has teams that overachieve relative to their talent level; even if they aren’t a top 5 team.

He's doing an excellent job recruiting, the defense has been fun to watch most games (so much so that a bad performance upsets people).  He a terrific fit for the program from a culture perspective and he's a good human being.  Michigan football is respectable again even after the losses. We have a legitimate shot now every year at making the playoffs, so what the hell is everyone whining about?  Ohio state has beat our asses more often than not. Boohoo.  That's probably going to continue with a rich rod like hire or you end up with a scandal or any other number of things that detracts from a stable program which is what we need.

Your logic makes no sense. There are elite teams in college football Alabama Clemson OSU and probably Georgia.  Then there is everyone else. 10 wins in today’s day and age is a very good season and he still brings in top10 recruiting classes.  You think that’s not good coaching?  Your crazy is all I can say

look I’m not thrilled with the last two games but I also know discarding JH for some young up and comer has a more likely chance of becoming Hoke or RR all over again rather then us becoming Alabama. This program is still a lot better then it was 4 years ago and to reach the top of the mountain will not be easy but Sabans and Dabos don’t just grow on trees out there or everyone would have them. I guess watch what you wish for

Harbaugh is the best coach we've had in a while and people want to get rid of him? Fuck our fans sometimes.

RR= Being sabotaged by influential Michigan insiders with power.  Don't know if he would have been super successful at Michigan, but he wasn't given a fair shot at all.

Hoke=  Michigan hired a dipshit of an AD that, out of narcissistic behavior that would have made Napoleon blush, went out and hired a Head Coach that had a 50% win record at MAC schools just because he was a "Michigan Man".

It has been the arrogance of people in power at Michigan that have put us in the position we are now.  Harbaugh was a good hire.  We all thought he we had a GREAT hire and one that would be our Messiah.  We should have been more measured.

This.

Ten year shit show after the "Michigan needs a new Carr with Les Miles" crowd crowing through 2004/2006.

Then we had the joys of Rich Rod/Hoke.

Realistically, short of bringing Urban Meyer out of retirement who is going to be better? Man, we've become Notre Dame pre (and perhaps during Kelly) as a fanbase.

There is nobody.

This job requires that you win at a high level and do it the right way. This cannot be discounted. Especially against the backdrop of the conduct of our division rivals and the recruiting practices of the southern teams.

Further, this program had to be rebuilt after three botched transitions.   None of the MAC and D3 heroes being bandied about in this thread could be successful given the above and after the FOURTH botched transition.

Only our enemies would suggest that we embark on such a fools errand.

Spare your philosophical bullshit, and where are you getting three botched transitions? Lloyd to RR, RR to Hoke is only two. Considering we had the most draft picks in school history in 2016 how can you call that a botched transition or "having to be rebuilt"? We're in year fucking four of Harbaugh and you're still blaming it on some rebuild that didn't exist.

I know it is hard for you to count but Hoke to Harbaugh is transition #3. He was not able to get started until the very end of December.

You may want to ignore the facts and I understand that because it does not fit your argument.  However, it takes time to build a program clean.  Especially one that had fallen as far as Michigan.

Harbaugh has us on the doorstep.  You may want to get on the coaching carousel for another three year transition after which you’ll be calling for another coach’s head.  Frankly it is a stupid idea.

0-4 OSU

1-9 top 10 ranked teams

1-3 in bowl games

2-2 MSU

Look I know he fixed some things with the team, but did you honestly believe that after year four of Harbaugh we would have 0 wins against OSU, no playoff appearances, beat like this in bowl games, #1 defense giving up 100+ points in the last two games of the season?  I didn't think that would be the case, and I don't think thats fair for a coach making the money he does.
