In reality who could Michigan get to be a better HC?

Submitted by WeimyWoodson on December 29th, 2018 at 3:47 PM

I'm now onboard with the idea that Harbaugh is not the guy to get it done here, but who really could?  I feel like "eh this is kinda Michigan football, its not going to get better".  But really Michigan needs a coach who can come in here and revamp the offense.  No more of these FB dives, hand off to the running back to run up the gut for a year, slow tempo, delay of game when down like 30....

Not that Michigan would part ways but would would be a realistic coach to fix this mess because Saban and Dabo are not coming.

Harbaugh is likely here for the foreseeable future if he keeps getting 10 win seasons.  But what about Brent Venables?  IDK if he has head coaching experience though.

Whether you want Harbaugh to stay or not, "who else would be better" is a poor argument.  Same shit we hear with the Lions and Stafford.  The argument seems to play towards the fear of the unknown.

Today I don't know who's better than Harbaugh.  I confidently believe that if the powers to be did their homework, they could find better game-day coaches and developers of talent than Harbaugh.  Those names may not have the notoriety of Harbaugh and will likely struggle to recruit as well...at least until they demonstrate results.  We've seen Ohio State take guys who weren't big names who became winners.  We see it happen in the NFL.

I'd be confident in taking a chance of handing the talent Harbaugh has recruited to a better talent developer and strategist.  If that person wins, then that person will eventually recruit his own high level talent.

That said, I don't think this is a realistic debate.  Harbaugh isn't being replaced.  I think we're stuck with a team that will lose 3 or 4 games a year for the forseable future.

There isn't.

We got the dream coach we all wanted.

"Saban and Dabo are not coming"

yes.  correct.  and you want to be Alabama north.  but that's Ohio state right now.

So there is no miracle cure, we got the guy we all wanted, and he brought us back to where Carr left off.

1997 was the exception.

Unless Harbaugh can recruit his ass off and get top (and I mean Alabama level) recruiting classes, we're going to remain top 25 but never top 5.

Don’t even put Harbaugh in the same conversation as Lloyd Carr.

Yes, we wanted more out of Lloyd’s teams.  But they were always in the hunt and he has actually achieved the success that Harbaugh never has.  And Lloyd’s teams never so embarrassed the program as this seasons OSU and Florida performances.

Honestly OP I can’t answer your question but, I feel like this is a good thread to put my thoughts.

Harbaugh was brought in to turn around a sinking program. He came in and succeeded in year 1 and 2. I personally was thrilled just to be looking forward to Saturday’s and being able to talk a little trash with all my OSU buddies. Year 3 is when I woke up and realized maybe Harbaugh isn’t the guy we need. You look at what Urban did at OSU when he came in. I know I know he had a loaded roster when he came in but, if the roles were reversed I can almost guarantee Urban would of had back to back to back 10 win seasons and probably some bowl wins or at least more than 1 in 4 years, not only that but he probably could of pulled a few more big wins out of his butt then Harbaugh has especially against rivals. I make this comparison because before Harbaugh came back his name was as big as Urban and Saban and bigger than a fella named Dabo Swinney. Now I don’t think Harbaugh can in any way, shape or form be mentioned in the same breath as these guys. When you add everything up Harbaugh has done it amounts to a whole lot of nothing other than 38 wins against some sub par teams. Now I’m not sure how this is fixed other than the AD and boosters heating the seat a bit. A lot of young coaches out there are waiting for a chance and I think if Harbaugh could shed the NFL mindset and go up beat pinball points style of O we would see brighter days both on the field and off with recruiting. If he doesn’t want to do this then I say find someone else. Cause watching ND and Clemson right now is night and day to UM.

I agree. Some are getting mad I posted this but I just want to open the discussion. I think he’s beat up on bad teams. 2016 I think was a good year and came up short. I moved on saying bad luck. But after four...eh this seems to be more of a trend.

Running an outdated offense in today’s game is making it too hard. Even Saban figured that out recently. Time for Michigan to as well.

Either coach in the WSU versus ISU bowl. Happy? How about the guy who just fucked Harbaugh up the ass?

Was that so hard?

I don't think think Harbaugh is getting fired right now but 1-9 versus top 10 teams, 0-4 against OSU and no conference titles is not good. Those were the things Jim was brought in to do so if the next couple years those things don't change than I don't see what other choice you have. This is not about unrealistic expectations, I don't think anybody thinks replicating Alabama level of success is possible but Jim is 0-3 right now in doing the things we were hoping for coming in

The problem is that everyone wants a big name instead of guys that could make a name for themselves .

Mike Leach has proven himself at Texas Tech and Washington St., he deserves a shot at a powerhouse.

Chris Peterson has been a force with Boise St. and Washington .

Kyle Whittingham has done very well at Utah, with no big name players.

Matt Campbell has been brought up 1000 times already.

Bronco Mendenhall had some really good teams at BYU with freaking Mormon players and looks like he has turned around a Virginia team that has been awful for a decade.

These are the kind of guys that I think we need to be looking at. They have all over achieved at far lesser programs than Michigan.

Eh, whatever. What time is the Binghampton game tomorrow? If I were John Beilein, I would be more than a little annoyed that my number 2-ranked, still-undefeated basketball program (along with the numerous banners Beilein has added to the rafters at Crisler) has to live in the shadow of a chronically-underachieving football program that seems to hog all the attention despite having failed to accomplish anything of consequence for the better part of two decades. Thankfully, Beilein is a much classier man than I.

We are a basketball school. Own it. Love it. Embrace it. Because John Beilein deserves it.

To the people who are aghast that this thread hasn’t been deleted: is there any point at which you’d pull the plug on Harbaugh? What if he goes 10-2 and loses to OSU next year? How about the year after that? Letting his contract expire in 2022 isn’t really an option since he wouldn’t be able to recruit, so unless he leaves on his own accord, something’s gotta give. But if 2021 rolls around and Harbaugh is 0-6 vs. OSU and hasn’t won the division, I really don’t see how anyone could justify giving him an extension. At that point just roll the dice with literally any decent up and coming spread coach.

Since we are JUST talking names. Honestly I would say Dabo Swinney from Clemson. Throw that 7.5 mil at someone who is a top 5 coach in COLLEGE FOOTBALL for at least the past 5 years.

Get a proven outsider. Someone that took less-talented teams, from a lower-tier conference. Someone with an offensive mind with a new philosophy, who could be in the Top 2 every year if he just had better talent and a better school/location.

Let’s take a flier on an outsider, NOW that we are at least steady as a program.  Let’s start over and throw recruiting and the program back in the ditch.  Someone that meets all those requirements . . . like RichRod, over a proven good coach like Harbaugh.

We all thought Harbaugh was a good coach and good recruiter when we got him. He was a good coach at SF. He was a good coach at Stanford. Stanford!  He will adjust. He wants to win. He’s laid the foundation. Once we can get over the hump(s), we will get the 5-stars and the program will get to the next level. Right now there is Alabama/Clemson and then everyone else. We now have a floor. We will not win fewer than 8 games a year with JH. My guess is we won’t win fewer than 9. This will continue to attract 4-5 star talent.  Then with some new coaching periodically, a different mix of players, a special group, we go undefeated. It’s like most of you don’t remember pre-Harbaugh (RichRod and Hoke) or pre-Harbaugh Lloyd. Yes even before the internet, Lloyd did win an NC but still had frustrating seasons (8-4, 8-4, 9-3-1).  You don’t have to go 11-1 or 12-0 every year to eventually win a NC. Just one special year. I’ll take my chances with a proven commodity like JH.

Those that want to throw out the HC and start the program over are asking for a few more 7-5 or 6-6 (or maybe 3-9) seasons in the hopes that new coaching can get you better than where we are now. What coach out there is not a risk? Who is worth starting over for, versus changing up the OC or LB coach or getting the bumper crop of recruits one year? SMH
