Realistic best case scenario for bball

Submitted by Umich19 on May 20th, 2019 at 1:26 PM

1) Sign Juwan Howard as HC

2) Maintain Yaklich and maybe one other assistant   to ease Howard’s transition from NBA to college and maintain some continuity

3) regain Jalen Wilson commitment

.

.

.

*Extra* 4) Juwan Howard flexes his recruiting prowess and lands nephew Jaden McDaniels... One can dream, right?

Honestly the given the timing this seems plausible and leaves the program in a solid state.

Isn’t this what everyone has been saying and thinking for several days?  This is remarkably unoriginal but also very representative of the majority’s hopes and dreams right now.

#1 and #2 seem very possible.

#3 seems quite unlikely.

#4 i'm not sure.  thinking 50/50 at best.

I don't feel confident about #3.

He's about to go visit Kansas where his best bud is playing next year. That doesn't give me hope for many reasons

I think Yaklich is mostly important for the players (on the roster and recruited). If Howard is indeed a defensive guru, he should be able to keep things solid on that end. Yaklich is an asset to keep the roster together and to free Howard to be a HC, but even if we keep him this year he's probably gone next year unless he is quietly anointed HC-in-waiting.

Offense is a total unknown. With offensive wizard John Beilein a team featuring Zavier Simpson had trouble scoring in its most crucial games.

Getting McDaniels would be nice. No idea if it's possible.

Regarding McDaniels chances, it seems low even if Howard is hired.  In reading Matt's comments on the other thread, he's been down to Kentucky or Washington for a while now.  To try and pry him away from those two at the last minute seems pretty unlikely.  I'd have to think our chances of getting Wilson back are better.  Still, there's always hope.

Ha, that’s funny. I took Matt’s comment to mean right now it’s between those schools but we have a chance if we hire Howard. And really, the comment spoke to two camps influencing McDaniels and not necessarily McDaniels himself.

What I’m trying to say is interpreting comments is more about what you (the reader) want to see than what was actually posted. Shrug.

#5 - Iggy realizes what an amazing opportunity he has to learn one more year of basketball under the tutelage of a former power forward who had a 19 year NBA career and 5 more years as a NBA assistant, comes back to Ann Arbor for the 2019-2020 season, and turns himself into a 2020 lottery pick, making millions more for himself while becoming a cult hero to U-M fans everywhere.

I agree, and that would be a huge asset with Z and Teske anchoring the offense next year--Cassius Winston wouldn't be able to switch onto Teske with abandon anymore. I don't know how much Teske can learn in a year, but there's nobody better to extract every bit of post skill out of him.

I do worry a bit that a years of modestly successful post work could get someone without much offensive theory of his own into a post-heavy rut in future years. But that's just speculation.

I'm at the point where "best case scenario" is simply to onboard Coach Howard... there's that chance that we outbid Texas to retain Yaklich for another couple of years too, sure.

We're at a crossroads which bodes strongly of "temper expectations."  But we've been here before.

I don’t see Wilson re-committing. Best case scenario for next season is a First Four game in Dayton.

Coaching change search comes to an end and we can get back to talking about cars, two hearted ale and really cool named beers, and also cutting the cord and which internet provider should you go with while cutting said cord.

5) Carly May doesn't reject me to prom in grade school. We go, have a great time, then hook up in my dad's '69 charger afterwards (which he is also acquiring in his realistic, best case scenario).

Realistic (not best case) scenario is that Howard coaches here, has moderate success, 2-3 NCAA tourney appearances, and then leaves for the NBA after 5 years.

Placing the thumbs-up/thumbs-down icons within a banner ad seems to have missed the point of allowing people to vote on the original post.  Maybe this is just one small step for the people at Human Element who still are trying to figure out how to bring back all the features of MGoBlog 2.0.

It’s funny how perspective changes things.  Out of all the topics we thought we’d be discussing at the end of b-ball season, the possibility of Howard being our best option as bball coach would have seemed ludicrous.

This is, however, 100% best case scenario at this point.  Warde better have Howard, Yak, Cooley all lined up for interviews on Tuesday.  If we don’t have a new head coach by Friday, it should be Warde’s last day.

1.  Make Juwan the coach

2.  Sign Jaden McDaniels and Franz

3.  Get the MHSAA to get rid of the restrictions for playing out of state.

4.  Dominate the midwest and Michigan recruiting(michigan produces top talent, most of which leaves for prep schools).  AAU, sneaker shit, get in thick!

5.  Win the whole thing in 3 years and watch Juwan leave for an NBA job

6.  Live off the afterglow like 98 and hire Patrick Beilein.
