Per Rapoport - Jesse Minter Unlikely to be Next Eagles DC

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on February 28th, 2023 at 9:42 AM

Well, that's not exactly what he said. What he did say is that Sean Desai of the Seahawks was in for a 2nd round of interviews and appears to be the favorite for the position. That also seems to be the general sentiment on Twitter.

#Seahawks associate head coach and defensive assistant Sean Desai is in the building in Philly today, doing a second interview for the #Eagles vacant DC job, per me and @MikeGarafolo. Desai, a Vic Fangio disciple, is a finalist for the post previously held by Jonathan Gannon.

So....it looks like the Eagles won't be stealing Minter from Michigan.

Per MgrowOld - This is very good news.

Look, he's a young guy and did a fantastic job last year so i'm sure this wont be his last chance to move up in the coaching world.  Plus it gives Jim an entire year to plan for his departure next year after we win the national championship.

If this was directed at me  (and damn is it challenging to tell which comment a comment is responding to) then I would encourage you to look at the thread title, as it appears on the side board, as that may shed some light on why I responded in what would appear to be a third person narrative.

It would be one thing if Defensive Coordinator for the Varsity Football team at the University of Michigan was the apex of Jesse Minter’s ambition, but since he took the interview I’ll go ahead and assume that he doesn’t see himself in this role until he retires from the workforce when he turns 65.

Just like anyone else in the working world, he likely has ambition and aspirations higher (or drastically different) than where he currently finds himself.

As such, I’m sorry that he will not be able to have the personal success of the increase in pay and experience that the new role would have afforded him.  I am also thrilled that his services will be retained by UM for what is likely to be at least one more season.

Obviously Clink has a co-DC title already, but I haven’t heard anything about what his actual duties are in that role.

Depending on how involved he is with Minter and the gameplanning, it would seem to be a fairly easy transition if he had to take over. Two years in the same room working closely with Minter and you’d assume he has a pretty good grasp of the defense. Play-calling is largely based on feel for the game though so there’s no telling how anyone will do in that type of role

Would love to see us promote Clink next year (assuming Minter moves up, which I think is likely). Clink might take some time to settle into the role but he's too valuable to lose to a different team, especially when we play the All Pro WR team (OSU) each year. We cannot afford a drop off in recruiting or development in the secondary.

Play calling for an offensive or defensive coordinator is a lot about feel, timing, and tendencies.

When playing cupcakes, play calling generally doesn’t matter as superior talent will win out.  When playing teams of equal or greater talent (OSU, Bama, UGA), play calling is everything-along with some luck ofc.

Minter was great all year until the TCU game.  Called some foolish blitzes.

But you never know how a position coach will translate to play caller until he actually does it.

Its not just play calling - it's the whole scheme.  How well does Clink know the defensive scheme, rather than 'just' the backend?  MacDonald and Minter run the Ravens' scheme, which is WAY different than most college defenses and sets up differently than most other defensive systems.  So, unless we change defensive schemes, he has to understand every facet of what the Raven's defense does - how it all works together.

Maybe he does know this?  I don't know, but he has 2 years in it versus a lifetime of standard 4-3/3-4 defenses and wasn't part of it's initial design like both Mac and Minter.  While I agree he deserves a good shot at it when Jesse eventually moves up, I hope we don't need to change schemes again.  This Ravens' business still seems to be working out pretty well...

I've been a big proponent of Clink & Elston being involved in the next DC discussion. Probably bump up Clink to DC, and name Elston co-DC...same title Clink currently has. Another year in this system with Minter should be enough to transfer the scheme/playcalling to Clink at least. Either way, don't want to lose either of these fantastic Assistant Coaches.

I wish nothing but success for everyone - with particular and extra attention for students and student athletes at Michigan.  (I will admit to being partial and acknowledging my preferred "shade colors" are maize & blue.)

Wishing every staff member / coach working with every team success - not only in Ann Arbor, but also in the journey of life - regardless of which college / university they are associated with.  (Though, my allegiance toward Michigan won't be questioned - I'll cheer for them unless / until they face the Wolverines.)

So, for Minter - I'm sure one more successful year as a DC will position him for future roles - including either a DC role on Sundays, or a head coaching role on Saturdays.

Selfishly, I'm glad he'll be in Ann Arbor this coming year - or, at least it looks that way.

And - as others have pointed out - I'm hoping Jim is thinking about who would be an ideal candidate to continue the success our recent DC's have had - building on the success, maintaining the culture, adding intricacy and "Sunday stuff" into the schemes, etc..   So, when a fantastic opportunity arises for Minter - that the next very good DC would step into the role without skipping a beat.

Minter is going to get his shot sooner or later. But ideally, I'm hoping its after this upcoming season.

2023, in my mind, is very much a "push all the chips to the middle of the table" kind of season. It could be a minute before you have this collection of talent on the team again, you don't know how long Harbaugh is sticking around, and we could be seeing nearly the entire offensive production graduate or declare after next season and going into 2024. The 2024 Michigan football team, at least on offense, may be near unrecognizable compared to 2023, which likely means that at least on some level, they'll be taking a step back going into 2024.

Bama is breaking in a new QB next year. So is OSU, PSU and Georgia. USC still doesn't have a defense so they can't stop anyone. Almost all of your production is coming back.

If there is a year to break through, this could be it.

Yeah, I never thought Minter was likely to go to Philly.  There were other candidates who were better fits.  I do think Minter will be gone soon enough, either as an HC at a G5 program or in the NFL.

It's very possible.  Barring a desaster this should be a very good season and you can expect a drop off the following year.  Lot's of players moving on and I imagine the coaches will be well aware of their stock potentially being at a high.

That said I don't think the bottom is going to drop out or anything in 2024, but these last three years have been historically great.
