Quinn Nordin gets some praise in Patriots camp

Submitted by Wally Llama on August 10th, 2021 at 7:12 AM

It was always going to be difficult for him to unseat Nick Folk, but this article says that Folk isn't in camp and Nordin's doing well there. Even crusty ol' Belicheck manages to grumble out a complement.

Here's hoping for the best for him!

He’s been accurate, too, connecting on all 10 of his field-goal attempts. At Michigan, he went 42 for 48 on field goals, an 87.5% conversion rate.

In my crazed fandom-mind, I swear he missed a lot more than six field goals. Was it that a few of the misses were really makable?

Whoever wrote that Nordin was 42 for 48 at Michigan is either smoking something or has terrible reading comprehension.

According to the UM Bentley Library football statistics database, Nordin biffed sixteen attempts—he was 42 for 58 for a 72.4% conversion rate. That's awful.

If Nordin manages to make an NFL roster, nobody will be more surprised than me.

"If Nordin manages to make an NFL roster, nobody will be more surprised than me."

FWIW another former 5 star athlete like Nordin who didnt do crap at Michigan is absolutely dominating the Browns training camp this year. Peoples-Jones went in the 6th round and I'm sure if I told you last year he would absolutely be crushing it in year two I'll bet you'd have been surprised at his development as well.  Every single day both Browns twitter and the normal MSM have DPJ highlights posted and they're amazing.  If the season started today he would literally be WR #1 over both OBJ & Jarvis Landry - he's doing that good.

Coaching matters.  And neither DPJ or Nordin got much of it at Michigan unfortunately.

The hiring of McElwain as WR coach for 2018 was really strange. He hadn't coached WRs since 2005 at MSU, and Harbaugh had to know that if McElwain got another HC job offer, he'd be out the door immediately. Why not hire a guy with more recent experience who was likely to stick around for more than one season?

The constant shuffling on Harbaugh's staff has been part of the program's problems, especially on offense. It backs up my long-held opinion that at this level of football, the single most important thing a HC has to do is assemble a competent, loyal staff for every position group. You can recruit a team chock full of 4- and 5-stars, but if the coaching is substandard, you're going to get substandard results.

McElwain's coaching of the WRs was the one year I thought the offense looked explosive passing the ball and the WRs blocked and ran good routes consistently.  This place loved to call him a shark fucker because ROFL but he was a good coach and I was really annoyed they didn't replace him.

Don't get me started on DPJ's lack of coaching. To this day I'm still baffled as to why Harbaugh, the reported QB guru, would spend his last assistant spot on a dedicated QB coach, leaving WRs to be coached by a grad assistant. I'm convinced that not having an actual WR coach seriously stunted the growth of that awesome WR class (DPJ, Nico, Black), especially for a guy like DPJ who was an athletic freak but admittedly very raw...

According to Sportsreference he missed 16 FGs and 5(!) PATs.

Also, some of his makes were sidewinders or knuckleballs that went in because he hit them so hard the spin (or lack there of) didn't have time to mess with the trajectory, so even some of his makes left a miss-like impression on me.

The guy has a cannon attached to his hip. Not well calibrated though.

The OSU PAT miss in '19 was stupid coaching with the scrum alignment that they then reset and had him quick under a bit of time duress. But otherwise, yeah I don't think a plurality of kickers who miss college PATs are long for the NFL now that their PATs have been moved back.

Almost positive he graduated. No idea on the military.

If somehow Nordin makes the Pats as new K, hoping the ball stays on the field in Gillette Stadium.  Based on past performance, kicks could end up either in Mansfield or Medfield, depending on which end zone he's kicking to.

I’ll never forget how promising he looked at booming that first kick again Florida straight through the uprights from like 55. I guess that epitomized the false hope gleaned from the entire team’s performance that day

Gotta love inane football guy speak....

On the one hand, he's been perfect in camp so far: "He's been accurate, too, connecting on all 10 of his field-goal attempts."

Yet, somehow he needs to improve: "Quinn's improved. He's still got a long way to go, but he's improved," Belichick said Monday.

The Patriot Way or something rather? Hilarious.

Kicker is literally the ultimate practice position.  Hundreds of guys can make kicks without  pressure.  We’ll see how Bill B. reacts when he shanks a 40 yarder during a game.

I just logged on here to post about Nordin.

I was at the Patriots training camp today and Quinn looked really good. It's impossible to tell what is really going on in his head, but he looked comfortable and happy from outward appearances.

He made all his kicks, and he got a lot of cheers from a pretty big and very vocal crowd.  Of course,  there were no defenders on any of his kicks, but you've gotta start somewhere, and he looked really good.

He's getting some great press in the Boston area.

I hope he can get back his form and finally perform to his potential. I'm hoping for the best for him.
