Question regarding early enrollees

Submitted by Gucci Mane on

Does an early enrollee for football have to be enrolled for Winter semester ? Or can they start class in Spring semester ? The main reason I ask is regarding Najee Harris. School starts on the 4th. So if he is not enrolled in Michigan by then are we out of it ?

Some of the early enrollees (CMH, Black) are already in the directory.

Alabama does not start till the 11th, so the more time he is not in either directory (he is not in theirs or ours yet) does that make them more likely ?

Hopefully someone can answer the EE question. Either way, another thread on the top recruit can't hurt !

It's allowed, but he would have missed spring practices, which occur during the winter semester. He would still need to graduate early, but would be sitting at home for four months. Players do sometimes start classes in the summer semester. They aren't considered EEs as they aren't graduating early. They are just getting a little head start.

As someone said below (and has been said on every EE thread) , the deadline to enroll is the drop/add date, about two weeks after classes start. That's always been the rule for all students, not just for football players.

Is that we'll know tomorrow, one way or another, whether Harris is coming here.  Either his name will appear in the directory, or an announcement will be made, or something will leak out.  If none of that hsppens, with only 2 days before classes starting, you'd have to assume his ship has sailed for Michigsn.

To semi-disagree with myself, when I wrote the above I was not aware of his commitment to play in the US Army All-American game in San Antonio next Saturday, as noted by ReadYourGuard, below.

So if he and Michigan were planning this, it seems likely that everyone would agree that it's a bad idea to show up in Ann Arbor and then immediately turn around and leave for three days. Better to arrive after the game.

Technically, my "by the end of this week" statement still stands, just barely!

Yeah I didn't know that either. That to me is plausible, that he'd be delayed a week for the game. The saga continues......

The players don't just show up for the AA game on Jan 7. They spend the week there practicing.

Missing the first day or two of classes is not a big deal. I'm sure players have gone this route before.

...to run behind an OL that's still a work in progress, while the school he's still committed to churns out great running games every year?

Since 2013, Alabama has had seven OL drafted; Michigan has had 3. Of course Harbaugh isn't responsible for this, but it's going to take time to rectify. I don't have any doubt that it will get done, but Alabama has the machine going now—Harris doesn't have to wait for an OL to develop that can open holes with any kind of consistency, especially against tough competition.

If Harris decommits from Alabama to us in spite of this unfortunate fact, it will be biggest recruiting coup in several years IMHO.

Sorry, I didn't want to start on anew thread for this. But, I just read on Twitter that Steve Wiltfong has a gut feeling that Filiaga ends up at OU even though 90+% crystal balls are to Michigan. Is his gut feeling as accurate as Sam Webb's? I'm not pleased by this prediction.

Recruiting websites often list players at whatever position the players want to be listed at. That's why you see so many players listed as "tackles" when they can't possibly all play that position. Patrick Kugler was rated as an OG by Rivals and ESPN, even though Michigan was targeting him as a center and he has mostly been a backup center in his career. Kyle Kalis was an OT on recruiting sites, but he didn't play a snap at offensive tackle in five years.

There are some who think all of those guys are interior guys. I think Stueber is a RT and Herbert is a LT. I used to think that Hall could be a LT, but with the way he filled out over the last year, I think he'll end up at OG. There's been some talk that Honigford will be a center.

So it's kind of a crap shoot. But nobody is a surefire LT type, IMO.
