Question on Michigan basketballs current win streak

Submitted by Champeen on January 7th, 2019 at 9:27 AM

My googling either sucks, or i'm failing to find any articles on this...

Michigan is 15-0 this year, but what is their win streak dating back to last year?

Who has the longest active win streak/who is 2nd?

UCLA won 88 games in a row, so Michigan has its work cut out for them (is this record EVER going to be beaten?  damn!)

Since you apparently have entirely forgotten that Michigan played in—and lost—the national championship game last year, I don’t think the problem is your googling.

Not super tough to pull up last year's schedule.

As mentioned already, we didn't win the NCG, so...we are still on a 15 game win streak. If you want to talk regular season win streak, we are up to 24. Although 4 of those games to end the year were BTT so our true regular season streak is actually 20.

We are on a 29-1 streak.

Since the beginning of last season, we are 48-8.

So can a team who’s not eligible for their postseason tournament for other reasons — currently transitioning to D-I, new in the conference, or finished too low in the standings to qualify.

A D-I independent could also win its last game, but there haven’t been any for the past couple of seasons.

We lost our last game last year in case you don't remember, so our win streak is 15.

Every team that didn't win a post season tourney (so everyone minus Nova, Penn St. and a few others) lost their last game of the season.

However there are 3 undefeated teams currently. Us, Virginia and Houston. UVA and UH both lost in the tournament last year, in memorable fashion, so their win streaks are the same as their records which is 13 for UVA, 15 for Houston. So us and Houston have the longest win streaks, and then next is Virginia or any 1/2 loss team that lost early in the season and has won 13+ in a row since.

Today's non-thread related fun fact:

Only one team remains in all of college basketball that has yet to play a true road game.  That team is your #1 ranked Duke Blue Devils.

FYI- Michigan has played two.

I understand how ridiculous Graham Couch's poll was, but to some extent it has made sense. A lot of these teams have lost their first true road game. It doesn't warrant being out if the poll, but it could warrant Michigan being ahead of Duke.

Now, personally, I would take Duke over Michigan if I had to bet. But the polls are about who has earned the 1 spot

Yeah, 88 in a row is not happening.

And, in terms of B1G teams, Indiana went on a 67-1 run in the 70's. And Illinois started 2005 at 29-0 and got to 37-1. I think MSU went on a 27-1 streak in 2000 so we've beaten that.

Hahahahaha, we are 15-0. Our win steak dating back to last year is 15. You see, at the very end of last year there was this reasonably important game. We lost.

Their last loss besides Nova in the title game? @Northwestern on 2/6/18. Not what I was expecting. That said if they can win their next 8 games (which is a tough stretch with pesky NU at home, UW on the road, Indiana on the road, and OSU at home, among others) they could go a full calendar year with only one loss to Nova in the title game. Random but kinda cool thing to root for.

I am not ancient, but I have been around for a while.  Excusing the absence of a national title, the last 365 days or so has easily been the most impressive stretch of time for Michigan Basketball in my lifetime.

Yeah, missing out on the title game was a major bummer.  But given that we only have one of those ever, and it came in a year where we finished 3rd in the Big Ten standings, 3 full games out of first, I would grade the end of last year combined with the start of this year as the best.

All hail Beilein!

Best part about this 30-game stretch?  It shuts up all the haters who said we got to the championship based purely on luck.  The good coaching and talent can no longer be ignored.

Not to pile on, but if you watch the broadcast of any of our games this year, all they talk about is 26-1, say, dating back to last year. Kinda hard to miss.

But it's the first official Monday after the holiday break, so I say we spare the OP an official witch-burning.

UCLA won 88 games in a row, so Michigan has its work cut out for them (is this record EVER going to be beaten?  damn!)

UCLA won 88 games in a row in an era when players were required to sit their freshmen year, leaving school early for the NBA was rare, post-season conference tournaments were unheard of, and the NCAA tournament was only 25 teams deep.  Add the blind eye the NCAA took to Sam Gilbert's shenanigans during Wooden's tenure and it's safe to say that no men's basketball program will ever match UCLA's 88 game win streak.
