This is a MAC Bowl. Let's win first on Sat then maybe get depressed. Trolls will be all over us if this happens.

Silver lining for my family.  If they play a bowl game in Detroit I will be able to bring my whole family to a bowl game.  Ya, I would prefer to take them to Pasadena, but Detroit is much more realistic and in the budget.

It's 12/26...

That's actually pretty good timing, because you can allow him to step down immediately after the game and you still have 2 weeks before BCS and the end of the NFL season.

It's actually not bad timing.

The MGoBlog meme that Hoke is staying would be insufferable.

But that aside, if Hoke stepped down after the game, would you be okay with him coaching until 12/26 to coach us through the bowl game?

If we are 7-5 with wins over Maryland and Ohio State, I'm all for Hoke coaching the bowl game and trying to get to 8-5. If we get to 6-6 with an ugly win over Maryland and a brutal loss to Ohio State, I'd think it'd be in both his and U-M's best interest for him to step down December 1st and let everyone move on.

Not only do you do Hoke the favor of letting him search for another job, but you also get a four week search for a new head coach as opposed to a two week search which ends with a MAC level coach just to save a two week recruiting class.

Whether it's Dec. 1 or Jan. 1, the only offers he would get would be as a D-Line coach at best.  There is nothing you can point to from the past two seasons that would make some AD say they want to bring this guy in.  Unlike RichRod who you could argue was fighting an uphill battle with the "Michigan Men" crowd, Hoke had everybody who mattered supporting him and breaking the bank to bring in whatever he needed.

Even a 6-6 Michigan will be a better draw than some 7-5 teams.   I kind of doubt they would fall to the Quick Lane bowl.  Seems like San Fran or Pinstripe is more likely.

Right now we are pretty much a lock at the quick lane bowl, the way I see it.

Osu = top bowl, fiesta I think? Whatever In place of Rose.

Next tier (citrus, outback, holiday): msu, wisconsin, nebraska

Next tier (gator, San Fran, pin stripe): minnesota, Iowa, penn state

Next tier (quick lane, dallas): michigan, maryland, rutgers, northwestern

...unless penn state loses to illinois or Ohio state makes playoff, we will not move up a tier. But if we do, we could move as high as the gator... Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is pretty set at this point already.

I don't completely understand the new tie-ins, but I guess it depends on how much the tiers are based strictly on record.

At least one older post by Adam Rittenberg ESPN BLog suggested that's only true for the top tier.

http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/78767/b1g-to-adopt-tiered-bowl-selection-process

Beyond the top few teams, Delany indicated it's more about location (read $$$$) and not record, with the leage taking a more active role in selection (read $$$$).  I would assume matchup would be a consideration, but it wasn't mentioned.   Michigan traditionally draws well and travels well.  So, most likely to be guided to the best payout bowl possible within teams of similar record.

Penn State probably ends up at 7-5

If Michigan beats Maryland, Rutgers and Maryland could be 6-6 or 7-5.   Minnesota and Iowa could be 7-5.

Still seems up in the air to me.

Looking back, I think you are right... Looks like we will be in a similar boat with penn state, and I'm not sure which fan base is less amused at this point.. They've got the ban lift going for them.. Which still kind of leaves us in the quick lane or pin stripe. I don't think a Hoke-led, barely eligible michigan team is any more enticing than psu or iowa (they travel well too).. Michigan in Detroit and penn state in New York kind of makes perfect sense ... Thankfully with the new tie-ins we might actually get a beatable ACC team and not a mid major or higher rated SEC team in a florida bowl that would crush us

I have a lot of friends who went to VT, and they are all still convinced that was a touchdown catch in overtime. Anytime I want to get a rise out of them, I'll show them the gif that cleary shows Coale trapped the ball, but they still won't admit it wasn't a catch.

Anyways, to them I bet this game might seem like a chance for revenge after being robbed last time.

Any advantages for Michigan to play in the Detroit Lions' Quick Lane Bowl?
  • Opportunity for as many as 15 extra practices for players who will be part of Michigan Football Team 136
  • No expenses for housing and modest expenses for transportation for Michigan’s team and the marching band
  • Opportunity to play one more game this season in front of a hometown crowd
  • All of the departing players will be able to say that they were part of a Michigan team that played in a bowl game during each season when they were at Michigan
  • Nice parting gift for the graduating and possibly transferring players
  • Assuming that expectations are true, it would be a nice parting gift for the coaching staff and the strength and conditioning staff

OT: With the Detroit Lions sponsoring the bowl game, is the name of the game really intended to honor the memory of this guy -- Dick 'Night Train" Lane?

Do we really want to aim for ultimate humiliation? That team has 2 losses, and both were from missing last second field goals.

edit: didn't notice 1 post troll.

But to go into it. I really don't want  to see people like DG having to play against the coach that brought him to michigan.  Especially now that he's built a winning team out of 2-3 star recruits while the 4 and 5 star recruits he brought here have regressed.
