Program Insight - Bored, I thought I'd post this

Submitted by Raback Omaba on
As some of you may know, I have some personal contacts that are very close to the program, so I often am lucky enough to gain some personal insight into the season ahead. I was on the phone yesterday with one of my contacts killing time while I was on my drive down to Memphis (business). A few things. Question: "Honestly, what record do the guys on the team think we'll have this year?" Answer: "Undefeated" He went on to say that there definitely isn't a game on the schedule that they shouldn't win - ND is at home and they are ND.......MSU, although on the road, is MSU/they're better under Dantonio, but who is playing Qb/Rb for them? last year all they had was Ringer and it was smoke & mirrors by Dantonio.......OSU, although a great program, is rebuilding alot more than people think/This game will be at home and will be the last game of the season, so our QB's will have had time to develop/Also, contrary to what people think - RichRod DOES put an emphasis on the OSU game, and I can assure you that they do have a bullseye on their heads - He just isn't a media whore like some other coaches we know and would rather get his team hyped the football way....He went on to say that if there's a game that we could lose, it's PSU - they're gonna be good this year. Question: "Honestly man, is the Barwis program that tough?" Answer: "Insanely tough - The team has NEVER done the same workout twice. From a running perspective, our linebackers and lineman are expected to hit sprint times that other programs reserve for running backs (making an illusion to a friend at another D1 program.) This team is definitely the most well conditioned team in college football - guaranteed (coming from a pretty humble guy, IMO)" Question: "Give me some tidbits - Who sticks out to you so far?" * Donovan Warren is one of the hardest workers ever. He is primed for a breakout season (living up to his HS hype) * Cam Gordon - Great player, has great size - He'll probably (likely) move to linebacker though. He can play WR, but his catching ability just isn't all that natural. * Denard Robinson - Hasn't practiced yet but there's been opportunity to see him throw to some receivers - He's got a really nice zing on the ball - That, coupled with his athleticism, should make him pretty scary Question - "Starting QB, honestly, who is it gonna be?" Answer "Tate - He'll be there, Sheridan will definitely play some though, at least until the Tate/Denard program takes hold. Don't count Sheridan all the way out though - He's definitely better than he was last year, his skills don't fit the system though" Most of this stuff is just random stuff that we already knew, but it's cool to hear it from someone close to the program. I was really impressed to hear their response on the record. The are a very confident bunch and strongly feel that there isn't a game on the schedule that they shoulnd't win - Obviously every team in America thinks that, but it feels pretty good to hear it from your boys.

if anyone is going to suck? that's what i want to know. will ezeh be mistaken for a B10 LB this year? will those FR safeties be, uhhhhh, decent? which team will put up 450 yard and 40 pts on us with their 3rd string RB this year?

post but to hear that Sheridan might play is a bit concerning. Even if he is getting better, I don't think he should see the field ever again unless we are blowing some team out.

but do we have something to worry about with young safeties going up against a 3000-yard passer in the first game? Miller had six 300-yard games last season, one of which was a victory over Illinois...

Yes, Hiller, mea culpa. Good call, phil. I still cannot imagine that he is that bad, though, considering that the Illinois pass D was middle-of-the-pack amongst the Big Televen. Not bad, per se. I think Michigan Arrogance might have hit the point more squarely, though, that he has lost his favorite three WR since last year. Eating words has never given me indigestion.

I wouldn't even say he's bad at all; he'll get drafted in 2010 if he has a season like he did last year, all of the tools are there. Western had their contemporary "peak" last season, IMO: loss of NFL talent on defense and offense, loss of starting seniors, etc. I think they'll be down compared to last year, when Michigan was in my opinion the number 4 D1 team in the state behind MSU, CMU, and Western and would have struggled against the latter 2. I like UM's chances this season.

Most insiders continue to say that Sheridan is going to play some this year. As long as that PT comes in the 4th Q of a blowout game then I am ok with that. If not, then we are in some serious trouble.

because a team thinks they should beat another team it means they are taking them lightly. I played HS and Uni sports (not FB in Uni though) and we often went into games thinking we would win without underestimating the team we were playing. I also look at the schedule and don't see any games that are certain losses for the team this year. Do I think they will go undefeated....not likely, but can I say for sure that they will lose any of their games....no. I personally like to see a team that is confident and would much rather hear them say they think they can go undefeated as opposed to "I think we go 3-9 again".

is everyone on here hating on sheridan? i personally know him and would like to see him play if he earns a spot on the field. if the kid is better and can play then he should play. im sure Rich wont put him in if he doesnt deserve to be on the field

I think everyone feels this way, especially because he seems like a good kid. It's hard to get last year out of our minds though, and after watching his performances it would be a tough pill to swallow if he's the best option at QB. He'd have to show miraculous improvement over last year to not scare the crap out of fans when he steps on the field.

You are awesome. Keep this kind of content coming whether you are bored or not. This is a big reason why I love this site.

I know that in one of your responses you said: "Whenever I hear good shit, I'll post it. It's basically fluff, but whatever." I would like to hear anything that you hear from insiders/people close to the program/whoever you get your information from. Whether it's fluff or not. So I'd encourage to post the good and the bad! NO SUGARCOAT (haha)

I'm trying to tell myself to take this with a huge grain of salt ... but I seriously can't stop re-reading it over and over, haha

NOT be so confident? i mean... i'd rather have them say that WMU will be tough and have them work like balls just to beat WMU and subsequently pound them by 70. i mean, talking about who MSU has to replace? and ND is just ND? both of these teams smoked you last year, OMGinsiderZ, so maybe you should be working to not get smoked again instead of down playing other teams?

i dont think the michigan team will be too confident after last season. i think that the whole team will be working their asses off not to have a repeat season

PSU(remains close to the team). He has told me over and over that PSU has no offensive line and they lost their wr's. He said PSU will be good but not as good as last year. I really believe that if Michigan can get past their first game with Western Michigan, this could be a season to remember. With Michigan's improved offensive line and their running backs, I'm hoping that this takes some of the pressure off of Tate,Denard and the defense. I do believe this is an offensive machine in the making that the likes of the Big Ten has never seen. As bad as Michigan was beaten last year, Coach Rod will "show no mercy". Wouldn't shock this fan to see a 9 win season-with several over the top blow outs of opponents. No injuries-please.

I was getting really excited after reading some blog posts and board threads, but then I realized I had to come back to earth. I remember reading a particularly optimistic post about Forcier's talent, and some stuff about the other skill players we were bringing in, and I was like "there is no WAY we lose a game this year!" Then I remembered that we're still starting a frosh QB, that we're halfway through turning over the roster to match the offense, and we were 3-9 after all. I think we will be improved, but I'm doing my best not to expect an undefeated season. Sorry for being such a downer. I agree that there are no guaranteed losses this year, and I can envision 9 wins, at least.

I'm usually not an optimist in terms of my favorite teams, but this outfit winning 9 games is something I can definitely see happening. 3-9 is what it is ... 3-9. I'm not trying to sugarcoat it or play the "what-if" game, but ... what if: Michigan runs the ball in the red zone/takes a field goal against Toledo. Feasibly, they win 17-6 or cling to a close victory (since the Rockets couldn't really move the ball offensively). EDIT: Or Lopata just knocks through a chip-shot of sorts and sends the game to overtime. Anything can happen in college overtime. The Wolverines don't switch to the 3-3-5 during the Purdue game. Feasibly, they hold Purdue under 40 and pull off a victory (since they slapped up 42 points and all). Michigan converts the 2-pt against Utah and blanks them until overtime. Again, anything can happen in college football overtime. The conditions aren't horrendous against Northwestern/Warren's play is called correctly. Don't mistake this as me thinking Michigan should have or deserved to go 7-5. They went 3-9 for a reason. The point I'm trying to make is that they were literally a few plays/decisions away from potentially winning 6-7 games ... even with the atrocious quarterback play. Therefore, a 9-win season isn't as drastic as an improvement as everyone might fundamentally see it as, which is why I think they can pull it off with some luck.

Or more simply, what if our #1 QB (Threet) had stayed healthy all year? I think we would have beaten Toledo and NW, at least, with him playing four quarters. That would have put us at 5-7, which is maybe a little more indicative of the team we had (given that most of our losses were competitive until the fourth quarter).
