Prister: UM coaching staff is middle of the pack among ND opponents
Tim Prister, senior editor for the ND Rivals site, ranked the coaching staffs of their 2011 opponents, along with their own:
- ND (surprise!)
- Pitt
- Mich St.
- Maryland
- Wake Forest
- South Fla
- UM
- Navy
- Air Force
- Boston Coll
- USC
- Purdue
- Stanford
Really??? Not much respect, I'd say.....

So once we go out and beat them they will be singin a new tune
They'll still say the same thing.
Armando Allen did NOT step out of bounds!
Holy God. If they don't go at least 10-2 Kelly should be fired.
It's not like ND has been a powerhouse as of late. I'm not really sure how good they are supposed to be. I guess we'll see in week 2(?).
There is supposed to be a lot of promise for them. Returned a lot of players, if I recall correctly. Their freshman QBs who got thrown to the Wolves in our game developed a bit as the season went on. Christ (I know that is not how he spells his name, but the irony is so delicious) will be healthier. They shredded Miami in their bowl game. Plus, one would think Top 10 after top 10 recruiting classes would eventually get you somewhere...it's interesting to think in one of our worst three year stretches ever, Notre Dame still went 1-2 against us. MSU went 3-0.
All I can say after reading that list is...why the hell does ND keep getting away with such easy freaking schedules? I will concede that pretty much all of their opponents are good, but there really isn't any top end elite on that schedule. Hell last year, Stanford was the only one, and I think that was a blip. I can't wait until we're at the top again so at least they will have to play some top 10 team. Either that or we go independent so we can get away with the same shit as well.
To be fair, and that is asking a lot considering how much I hate ND, the Domers used to play a very rigorous schedule. It has only been the last few years that they started adding a lot of "meh" teams.
I agree with a poster above; given ND's talent and the schedule they are facing this year anything less than 9-3 in the regular season would be a colossal failure. I expect them to go 10-2 and play in a BCS bowl.
Exactly. They used to play a tough schedule. Since then, they have now figured out that they are in a position to exploit the BCS system. In the past when voters had to subjectively decide who was the best, a tough schedule is a big arguement for a championship if you emerge at the end. But in this system, especially with ND's BCS contract, all you need to do is win a bunch of games against pretty much anybody. Because they are ND, winning even against powder-puffs will put them in the BCS and if they were undefeted, likely the NC game. At that point, they are only one good game away from a championship.
That's why I am, as a Michigan fan, in favor of scheduling really easy games and not playing tough teams (like we are going to have to play Neb and OSU every year, which sucks). As a football fan, I love these games, but as a UM fan, I would rather play the murderer's row of Minn, Purdue, Ind, NW. Michigan is in the same position as ND, in that if we emerge from even the easiest B1G schedule in history undefeated, then we would most likely be in an NC game. Thus, we would be one good/lucky game away from a championship.
Would that really be fulfilling though? Plus, it would be more likely a battle-hardened, oversigned, and probably slightly ineligible SEC team would cream us than us getting "lucky" in a game. Ask TSIO about playing battle-hardened SEC teams.
ND always rips on us and other BCS programs because they don't play any FCS teams or any EMU types. What they usually fail to realize is they don't play many top programs either. That have 1 or 2 tough games a year, the academies, and 7-8 BCS teams from the middle/bottom of their leagues (Wake, Maryland, Purdue, BC, Stanford with the exception of last year, etc,).
We have an easy Big Ten schedule this year and we still have to play MSU, Iowa, Nebraska and OSU not to mention ND OOC.
teams on average make Bowl Games. Heck, we played UConn in the season opener and the Big12 Champion Sooners played them in their Bowl Game. Next year it's ND, AirForce and Alabama, definitely more than you can say for them. :o)
Pitt? Wake Forest? Whateva.
So I take it ND's staff is way improved from last year's efforts then?
Preseason football crap from Rivals and other outlets suxors.
ND staff that left that poor kid die taking pictures? The reviewer must not be taking some aspects of coaching into consideration. As an earlier poster said, it is ND.
VERY funny that Pitt is so high on that list.
Seriously though, Maryland, Wake Forest and South Florida ahead of us? Even the MSU one stumps me, but now as much as those. Having USC 11th on that list seems crazy too.
And only ND would make a list of their opponents' coaching staffs, and not only put themselves on the list, but put themselves at #1.
Lastly, I know our staff hasn't proven a lot as a group, but what has ND's staff proven? That they can lose to Tulsa? That they can beat up on the Big East when it's down? Seriously. At least Mattison was in the fucking NFL!
It's because of this type of shit that I hate ND so much.
The Pitt thing is really funny. Having Tony Gibson on your staff should put you towards the bottom in any league.
Obviously the wait and see caveats apply, but Graham is no slouch (he beat ND last year at Tulsa) and Magee hopefully knows a thing or two after spending years under RR.
I guaranty the only reason Pitt is this high is so ND can explain away their Tulsa loss. "That Todd Graham is a f*cking genius!!"
Navy staff ranked #8 that, oh I don't know, beat ND the last 2 years? Ah, tunnel visioned domers. Bringing the comedy.
I guess it will be sweet beating an overrated ND team on the comeback trail AGAIN!!
I know the list is stupid and irrelevant, but I would really like an explanation for these three having better coaching staffs than Michigan.
- Maryland
- Wake Forest
- South Fla
I make no claims until I see results. So far, if recruiting means anything, we are way higher than the middle of the pack. W's and L's will tell the tale,
How do they place Maryland higher than us? Didn't we kick the crap out of the team Maryland's new coach coached last year?
coached the crap out of uconn last year-hence why pitt is so high on the list! I kid, I kid, this list is ridiculous. Best of luck to mcgee and co., and best of luck to everyone playing ND. Go Blue!
Pitt, Wake, S. Fla? If this guy can get a job, then I feel really secure about my future once I graduate.
They had to fire their first choice as coach. ND Rivals site just as clueless as their fans.
said something to the same tune. Don't worry everyone, Notre Dame is in Returning to Glory mode: year 18.
How did that last "decided schematic advantage" work out for them?
I honestly believe that this is very accurate. Furthermore, casey anthony is truly innocent and miami deserves a nhl team.
Let's not get upset. We should not play them anymore. Don't have to deal with those guys and their pedestal. Only Irish guy I like is the poster on here.
I'm starting grad school at Pitt in the fall. $25 for the entire season.
Is that for the school or football tickets?
A school that has Tony Gibson as DC is that high? Meanwhile, tons of respect for Lane Kiffin. Hilarious. I didn't realize 12-year olds could be senior editors on Rivals sites, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. How's that Midwest recruiting coverage coming?
Of course he has to stick the Pitt gang up there - that's supposed to bother us. The rest of it really doesn't even rate a comment.
ND is a delusional bunch that is for sure. How can a school that hasn't been able to keep a coach since Holtz, have the audacity to rate other schools coaching staffs? When they actually do return to glory with one of their many saviors, maybe then they can rate a coach or two. Something tells me Kelly will have a melt down before he reaches saint status at ND.
With a weaker coaching staff Michigan beat them two straight years, so I wonder how it would be with a traditional Michigan coaching staff? I understand MSU, but Wake Forest, Maryland, South Fla. and, especially Pitt? You have to be joking
Which national media? You mean the one that consistently underrates Notre Dame in football every year? The one that scoffed at a Brady Quinn Heisman campaign? The one that said Ryan Mallett was probably ultimately the better QB of the Class of '07? The one that couldn't stop criticizing every move made by every ND coach in history?
Yeah right.
The national media I know probably won't have ND ranked any higher than 2nd in the AP poll by the night game. Never first. Or zeroeth. And those biased rascals would never imagine voting ND even as high as minus-14.
Michigan and USC should both decide to stop playing ND since clearly they will be out coached. If they do, people might finally realize that ND doesn't play anyone besides those schools. They seem to think everyone wants them, but USC and UM can easily find a ND replacement, not sure ND can do the same.
Notice a trend as you get lower on the list? Navy, USC, stanford, michigan, and of course boston college, are all teams that consistantly whip NDs ass. How did they come up with wake forest at 5th? They won 3 games last season, one being against a DII school and the other a 6 point win over duke.
Neg away if you want as I am sure, judging by the previous posts on this thread, this won't be a popular thought.....but I don't really see this as horrible. Pitt and Maryland both have head coaches who have a better winning percentage than ours and are starting their first season at their respective schools. ND and Wake have head coaches with better winning percentages than ours and so does USF. I don't really know how how much they weigh assistant coaches and coordinators, but as far as actual head coaches go, I don't really have a problem with it. I would say we have the best defensive coordinator of the bunch, but as I am not a member, I don't know how much they take this into consideration. Face it, our head coach is unproven so far and until he wins games at Michigan, he will be seen as a question mark. Overall I think this list is a little ridiculous considering half the coaches in their schedule are unproven at their current schools.
The rating was said to reflect the entire staff, not just the head coach. Here was what they said about UM:
"Michigan: (HC-Brady Hoke 47-50, .484 in eight years, OC-Al Borges, DC-Greg Mattison) - Do not be fooled by the sub-.500 career record. Hoke led Ball State to a 12-victory season in 2008 while the nine victories at San Diego State last year were three more than any other Aztec season in the decade. Throw in a couple of veteran coordinators, including former Irish defensive leader Mattison, and the Wolverines should have the stability that was missing throughout the brief Rich Rodriguez era."
This description sounds more positive than the numerical rating, Shrug.
I just made a list of people whose opinion I respect or care about, and Timmy here didn't even make the list!
<br>Guess it'll be pretty upsetting when #7 beats #1.
Yesman stole my thunder a little bit. If you notice where some of their biggest rivals are, you'll find most of them placed on the bottom half of the list. I find this to be a little ironic.
Oh well, we'll show them a good time under the lights.
"Tim Prister" must be Lou Holtz's pen name, kinda like Dr. Suess.
but he's why most people think ND fans and alumni are douchebags.
F him, ignore it, don't give him any ad money.
