Pistons tie an NBA record for futility

The Detroit Pistons tied an NBA record last night by losing their 26th game in a row to the Brooklyn Nets.

They can own said record after Tuesday's game against...the Brooklyn Nets. I think if they keep trying hard, and play as a team they can achieve history. Infamy. I meant infamy. And this coming draft is considered very weak at the top, in case you were struggling to find a silver lining.

Man idk what is going on with this team. I thought this was going to be the year they hit the playoffs and started their ascent. The only silver lining is that Cade is starting to stack efficient performances on top of each other instead of every few games.

I mean, look at the turnover rate. It is among the worst in the NBA this year. Just atrocious. By any advanced metrics, Cade is among the worst players in the NBA. Part of this is due to the fact that he’s being asked to do so much on offense, but also, he’s not exactly an elite player despite his draft pick. That was not a great class.

I’m bummed. I was really looking forward to rooting for a good Pistons team again soon, especially with the move Downtown. Just so many misses. Stanley Johnson over Devin Booker, Kennard over Donovan Mitchell, Darko over don’t even get me started, Hayes over Halliburton. The entire front office needs to be cleaned out.

Yeah, I don't see a ton of their games not being in the market but I sort of figured they'd look like Orlando did last year; not "good" somewhat competitive with a young roster.  And that would be a spring board next year.  But they seem just absurdly poorly coached and also a terrible mismatch to parts.

The Athletic asked Tom Gores about the chants that he should sell the team and this is a direct fucking quote: "If you put aside winning, we’ve made a very big difference in the community"

That's the attitude you want from your owner, that's for sure. Google "Tom Gores Securus" to see how Tom Gores makes a difference in his community.

Yea, not to get political but the outright lobbying of politicians by both the for profit prison industry and the prison guard unions to keep more laws on the books that lock up more people for bullshit and for longer is disgusting and should also be illegal. Some stuff should not be privatized. Check out the story of the judge in Pennsylvania who was sending kids to a for profit juvenile jail and getting kickbacks for long periods for things that would ordinarily not get that. Disgusting.

Their defense is terrible, partly aided by all the turnovers.

In the 26 games, they've:

  • given up 120+ points 17 times
  • given up 140+ points 2 times

Their 2 wins this season feature their 2 best defensive performances all year: 99 and 102 points against.

So as someone who follows the NBA sparingly and the Pistons not at all, how did things get this bad? Just whiffing on draft picks year after year? Incompetent management/coaching? Gypsy curse?

Starting at the top down. Outright absentee owner, owns for the resale value only. GM is a bumbling moron who couldnt draft the winning powerball numbers even if you told him. Crippling nepotism in the front office. And a head coach who said in his introductory presser this past year that he "only took this job for the money" and is completely baked. Other than that Mrs Lincoln...

They last won during the reign of Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor, or so it seems anyway.

If it is possible to tank as you in fact tank (however unwitting it may be), this might be how you do it.

Apparently, Tom Gores thought the wins would just come. You know, if you wait....patiently, like we used to for parcels. Eventually, they would appear. Eventually.

Red Wings ! Want to trade for  the Sharks ? The only good thing about living in the East Bay is we gave our bottom dweller sports teams to Las Vegas. Having no pro teams is better than subsidizing losing teams with shithead owners with taxpayer money. Maybe Las Vegas can throw a lot of public money at those black holes and make a go of it . They will still have to deal with the owners who will immediately scam them for more or in the case of the Davis family sue them endlessly if they fail.

I don't know a lot about the NBA, but I started following the Pistons on Reddit after Duren and Ivey were drafted, and then paid attention on the lead up to the Wemby sweepstakes.  I was keyed in during both of the Bad Boys runs and I wanted to get in early on this one.  Evidently having a team of 18-20 year olds isn't great.
