This will be the repository for hot takes regarding the defense and defensive playcalling.

Really upset that Nick Singleton picked up some yards in garbage time so I couldn't say: "Singleton? More like Single Digits!"

I had that joke ready for like an hour and they just come in at the end and mess it up.

Defense absolutely dominated a tricky offense. It was completely lopsided, and coaches still made great adjustments as the game went on. Love to see it.

Dominant performance. Gave up ten points (and only three in the second half) as a result of a perfect NFL throw (tip the cap) that you can't do anything about and a scramble where Clifford rolled a "20" on his d20.

Other than that, dominance.

They only gave up 10 pts. Can't blame them for the PSU pick-6. The pass rush was good enough. There were a lot of 3 and outs and critical 4th down stops in the second half.

Great job pretty much the whole game.  Minter had them figured out and deserves so much credit.  We got good pressure only rushing four.  They just dominated PSU.  A great day.

We've heard how good Iowa's defense is. We've heard how good Penn State's defense is. Maybe it's time to start talking about how good Michigan's defense is.

Wanna see Minter perform like this against a Maryland like offense, but he's really improved. We have consistently had great blitzes on 3rd down this year

Penn State's offense isn't great or anything, but the D held them to 10 points. That's... good.

I was worried about the dynamic RB getting loose in the secondary, and how that could affect the outcome of a tight game.

Turns out that is exactly what happened, but it was our dynamic RBs getting loose when the game was tight. PSU was absolutely jailed.

Maybe our defense is good.

what can i say? this is the second straight game where the defense has absolutely put a vice grip on their opponents.

is there a rookie of the year award for a coach? Minter's making a good case.

D is fucking awesome. They totally stuffed PSU. They are able to bring pressure with just 4. What a game by D. They are getting to be the D from last year and they look like they can do the same or even better than last year. Will Johnson made a nice play there on that 3rd & long. Glad to see the future at works there. Our DL is strong and dominate in the trenches. OSU has to worry about this D. They are only going to improve. All goals are in front of this D and they showed today, in a big way, what they can do

Definitely. It was already known to be nationally elite several games earlier; game 7 was MSU, when Charles Woodson had two picks, including *that* one.

Penn State was the first team to score on the defense in the fourth quarter that year. The defense was the story of the team from game one.

In 1997 I was working seven days a week in a very high pressure situation trying to save a small tech company and couldn't watch a game. A few minutes after the PSU game my brother (also an alum) called me at work and said "we just crushed Penn State. I think we going all the way. Do you want to get Rose Bowl tickets. I said yes go for it we'll find a way." And the team did and we did and we watched Michigan win the national championship.

So yes. Every fan in 1997 knew very well the potential of that team.

Tremendous.  Until Clifford's well executed fake handoff, 1 yard of rushing if I am not mistaken.  Allowed just 10 points to the 10th ranked team in the country and a wylie 6th year quarterback.  Just tremendous.

Really thought Penn State was going to be able to run outside the tackles and because of it put together drives. Was really wrong. Am really happy about it!

Gave up one big play that Clifford just had a really good read on. Otherwise, that was domination. They gave up ten points to a team with legit skill talent.

Grade out at a solid A.

They got two plays on us. Outside of that complete domination. This is insane to do to a top 10 team of comparable talent.

Defense went above and beyond and beyond and beyond. GJ BOYS
